A fairly heavy lawnmower is proving a very good substitute for the sled. I can push forwards, )carefully) walk backwards pulling it and now I'm going to walk sideways. Loving the zero course. Making steady progress from quite a poor starting point.

Great stuff, might throw this in one day per week as a test. ATG has talked about lateral speed before for warm ups but I don’t remember it anywhere else. I think a lot of movements are selected for efficiency and sled backward and forward are the most efficient base movements so you can add strength exercises like Piriformis lunge, seated good morning, loaded butterfly etc once there is blood flow. Still think I’ll give this a try to see how it feels, it might be useful for smoothing out weak areas in the hip.

I’ve thought of training lateral sled since being in ATG but didn’t know what regressions would be best. Awesome video! 🔥🔥🔥

I already did some lateral training but the way he explains it, the 3 different hip rotations, various feet position, it will take it to another level, for sure! So easy to add these after the "regular" forward push and backward sled Ben recommends. Just a few extra minutes added. Niiiiiiice. Thankfully my gym has sleds. I'd now be lost without it!

I added these in a couple of weeks ago. I started by replacing 25% of my lightest backward sled drag with lateral drags. I don't change the weight, and I leave the tow rope attached to the belt. I can't make my workouts longer right now, so this works for me. This technique video is very helpful, especially the part about opening the hips, the diagonal aspect of the anatomy, and the rotational aspect of the movement pattern(s). Thank you!

Also Nsima you are an absolute unit, you adapted to those changes so quickly! Very impressive. Keep up the amazing work fellas.

I suffered a pretty good ankle sprain yesterday. Got home and immediately started following Ben Patrick’s ankle sprain protocol and included backwards sled walks. Iced it over night. This morning went in my backyard, pulled the sled backwards again and included side pulls like this and my ankle is 50X better than it was yesterday at this time.

Lateral sled work seems like an extremely beneficial movement for hockey players. I'm a beer league hockey player preparing a bit for the season and seeing them do crossovers with the sleds made a light bulb go off. Any hockey players doing this? I don't have access to a real sled but I do have a treadmill and am incorporating some treadmill sled "hacks", not ideal but at least accessible.

The faster you move in general would point to the better athlete but what you’re really looking at an athletes ability to leverage their body efficiently against a force, and then who has an engine that can speed them faster. I’ve seen the best athletes are the ones that are the quickest in a dead sprint and even in things like this, the majority of the time, the overall faster athletes would do something like this fastest.

Trained these before and found it unnecessary; but, I could see inactive-athletes needing some. Edit: we do sled with progressive loading within the session; beginning with harder movements first, and slower. We make it as hard as we can for the weight and maintaining a certain speed. So, it’s likely we get the same benefit from big-man walks.

Might b overkill, is sideways healthy? Like certain ligaments or does back n forth already do all of this? I guess it makes sense to progress threw all movements but I would say back n forth is probably the over all best but after a while, y not try all other movements as long as their safe. Wish my gym had this capability.

This exercise is key to relieving sciatic nerve issues. When these lateral hip muscles are weak the piriformis tightens up to compensate for the weakness and presses on your sciatic nerve.
