TRANSCRIPT:
A common trend that many people do when lifting weights - whether intentionally or not - is to hold your breath during lifts. It’s a technique professional powerlifters are known to use called the Valsalva maneuver. The idea being that holding your breath while lifting extremely heavy weight can provide core strength and stability to protect your spine. However, holding your breath when lifting heavy weights can greatly increase your blood pressure, which can lead to light-headedness, fainting, injury, or even a heart attack.
So, as it relates to strength training in F45, or weightlifting in general, there’s really no reason to hold your breath when lifting weights. If you do find yourself holding your breath when lifting in class, consider reducing the amount of weight you’re lifting, and remind yourself to activate your abdominal muscles and focus on safe, quality reps with proper breathing technique. To learn more about proper breathing technique, check out our video on how to breathe properly during exercise. Get after it, team!
