It is a great story. At least, the Broadway show is. Whether it is adapted well or it loses something in translation, we will see. If you're thinking that they are trying to steal the concept from the movie Maleficient in making the bad girl a good girl, no, the Broadway show open in 2003. Maleficient took the idea from Wicked. So Wicked starts as kind of a prequel story for Elphaba (the green Wicked Witch of the West) and Glinda the Good Witch, as they start their time together at school (Dear Old Schiz, Schiz) being the name of the school and by the end of the show, we've gone through the events of the movie of the Wizard of Oz, kind of Lion King 1.5 style, seen from the perspective of the 2 protagonists. It kind of shows how Elphaba never intended to be Wicked but the people and authorities kept telling her that because she was green and because she had this magical powers that she was inclined to be wicked and they kind of forced her into her role, despite that the fact that she was trying to do what she perceived as good.

In Maleficent they completely miss the ambivalent part, needed to make such twist work. In the Ozz it was always clear that more is going there and "Wicked" being somewhat framed as evil. So it make sense why same story could work if looked from different angle. Instead making lazy twist that she is good and kind bad. They absolutely should make Maleficent dedicated to cause of Fairies and more her and king not willing to compromise. When both sides being at fault for the conflict. Instead they needed to make Three Fairies dumb to make her look bad, while there was literally no reason why she would be hostile. Sequel of Maleficent make is way better, excluding sugarcoated ending what ruin the movie.

I adore musicals, I love the wizard of Oz and I love Wicked, but you know what I can't stand? "Over singing" when someone is an incredibly talented singer and they will go out of their way to "show off" with certain notes by pretending they're Mariah Carey. The fact that the pivotal song of the play "Defying Gravity" is what's teased at the end of this trailer and has the most outrageous use of oversinging I've heard in a long time? I'm out. Sometimes less is more. Clearly a talented vocalist but just like (ironically enough as she's also in the film) Arianna Grande, this woman is clearly a perfect example of an incredibly talented singer who doesn't know how to sing. Someone that's got the pipes, got the talent, but over performs when the song doesn't ask for it.

The play is excellent; and if you love broadway, you should see it live on stage. I just don’t think this will translate well to the big screen. If the rumors are true, they are gonna pull a Dune pt 1 with this and split the story into two movies. With Dune, it’s a pretty complicated story so it makes sense to split it into two. Wicked, on the other hand, is a broadway show that could fit 2.5 hour movie.

The "don't be afraid" -"I'm not afraid. It's the wizard who should be afraid of me." Is a direkt quote from the musical. Glinda and Elphaba are hiding from the wizards guards in an attic. No dorothy isnt really a villain in wicked. The 2 parts make sence story wise. The wizard of oz takes place during the 2nd act of the musical.
