Do these fuel system cleaners really work?
If you want to see cleaner injectors here is a video that shows how after Wynn's diesel injector cleaner, the injectors are cleaner: • Wynn's diesel injector...
This is a test of the BG245 fuel system/injector cleaner in a 1.6HDi Peugeot Partner (2007; 90bhp; 66kW; 9HXC engine; ~100,000 miles or ~161,000 km), same as a Citroen Berlingo.
The tests comprises reading 3 times the leak-off of the injectors in the Peugeot Partner when the fuel tank was nearly empty. The car was also warmed, so not to affect the readings. These 3 were done in quick succession. BG245 was then added to the nearly empty fuel tank and filled with normal diesel (Texaco). I drove ~630-650 miles with the BG245, mainly shorter journeys (~60%) but also some motorway/highway as well (~40%). The fuel tank was again nearly empty and I did the same 3 measurements of the fuel returned by the injectors. The idea is that if an injector is blocked it will return a lot of fuel back as compared to a normal (non-blocked) injector. Fuel is under pressure and a blocked injector will result in slightly more fuel returning than going through the injector. It is not entirely scientific method and it is a bit crude and there could be a lot of variability. Nevertheless, it is fairly OK and I can easily perform it.
The BG245 apparently contains PEA (polyetheramine) or Techron. Also, here and there on variety of chats Shell V power puts in their v power diesel fuel. How true that is, is a different topic.
The video is how to perform a leak-off test or measure the return flow of the diesel from the injectors. Overall, one has to look for the variance between the injectors rather than some arbitrary constant return flow. There are some websites where it is stipulated that the injectors are good if they return less than 25ml per min. I am not too sure about these values. After the test 3 of my injectors return less than 25ml per min. So, there might be some merit in this less than 25ml per min at idle.
If you find this video useful, buy me a coffee: www.paypal.com/paypalme/morem...
Here are the results. No difference at after the use of the BG245. What is even more, all of the injectors were returning a bit more after that, not less. Nevertheless, the difference was not statistically significant. Also, I did not notice any effect on performance or the fuel economy.
Here are the list of things that I used:

Here are the actual numbers. inj means injector. The number after means the number of the injector, counting from left to right and the second number is 1 or 2 (1 before BG245 and 2 after BG245). For example, inj_4_1 is injector 4 (first from left) 1st time, i.e. before BG245.

Also serviced regularly..... I recently used 245 in my 2005 Caddy SDi and am hoping it helps.... The fuel filter was horrendous, black diesel in there... Its all clean now...... Mr. More Molecules, This is an excellent video. Thanks for doing it. In my opinion what you prove here is that fuel additive manufacturers have not explained what problem in the fuel their additive is correcting. For over a year now I have been asking those supposedly in the know? If anyone has ever defined for them the meaning of "Diesel fuel lubricity beyond just the words?" or what is the causal mechanism for poor diesel fuel lubricity? I have still have not got an answer. Good video- maybe it’s possible that the BG245 has either cleaned or loosened up dirt/particles in the system and that could be the reason why the results were worse after the cleaner. Maybe you could try using the cleaner and running an external tank with an online filter in place to catch whatever is in the system and not let it be pumped back through the system / injectors. Best of luck.
@moremolecules
@moremolecules 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Steve, many thanks for the comment, really appreciate it. It could be, but the fuel filter is supposed to capture these particles. Otherwise the fuel is under too much pressure in order to do an online filter. Unless of course the dirt/particles are in the high pressure lines going to the injectors, but unless I take them all off and soak them in the BG245, it is very difficult to do anything about them.

Hi Judeh, Hmm, I did not think about this and I have not changed the fuel filter beforehand. Nevertheless, the fuel filter is inline, so in other words if there are any debris that fall off before the fuel filter they should be captured by the filter. If there are any debris that fall off after the filter, even if I change the filter these will be always there. Unless of course finer particles wash off, pass the fuel filter and clog the injectors. Many thanks for the comment, might have to think something out.

Please give me any input as to why it worked for me. This stuff Is not snake oil in my opinion atleast.
@moremolecules
@moremolecules Жыл бұрын
There are a lot of assumption in my setup. I never said they are a snake oil, it is just that in what tests I was doing it did not show an improvement. There are multiple reasons why injectors might be clogged. It could be that mine are not clogged, but something else and no treatment will work. Also, engines are different. Furthermore, my test is a simple leak-off test, this is an approximation to how clean the injectors are, and it is not perfect. In all fairness, if there was a better test I would use it to see what works. Also, one needs probably 10-20 vehicles to test this and average out the effect from engines and so on. I am only one person and do not have a team around to do all that. I also rely on a test, albeit an approximation, instead of having a personal feel for the car if it is smoother and cleaner. This is not saying that it did not work in your case. THe best would be to take out the injectors, test them for spray pattern, then put them back on, do the treatment, then take them off again and see if that has improved anything. That is a lot of work for an youtube video that in most cases will give you ~$5. If of course some big youtuber with millions of subscribers/watchers does this there is return. I am also doing it for my own personal understanding of what could work on my older car.
@davidvukusich63
@davidvukusich63 Жыл бұрын
Maybe the line to the injector was restricted as well as the injector and then putting the BG 245 in ..opened up the line up to the injector and more fuel got to the injector and the return line that’s the reason why you’re getting more to the return line after the big 245
@moremolecules
@moremolecules Жыл бұрын
Good question, but I do not think that is what was hapenning here. If that was the case there would be differences in the high pressure pump pressures. I did check that (not shown in video unfortunately) and there were not any differences. Also, if that was the case, I agree that if one injector showed a bit of movement like this maybe there could be something like this, but all 4 is a bit difficult to reconcile. If the lines to the injectors is somewhat blocked, the high pressure pump needs to increae quite a bit the pressure in order for me to measure normal return values of the fuel.

I have a d4d 2 litre Toyota. In winter, carbon deposits build up in the engine causing fuel economy to fall. Carbon builds up since engine temperature does not get to its operating temperature after the short 6 mile journey. Hence I use BG245. How often should I use bg245, and what time of year should I use it ? Should I use it prior to a winter service in October, or use it in mid winter ? Using it in mid winter to remove carbon makes sense right ? Thanks, great video. Big 245 is especially effective on high compression Diesel engines like the Corolla 2003 d4d. I want to get to 250k miles.

If the BG245 helps your engine, I would use it every 3rd fill up. You could also try Wynn's injector cleaner (kzbin.info/www/bejne/eamte6eGdtd3b7s), I found it to work better at cleaning than BG245

Thank our for your sharing your practical research. I know a man who uses the Wynn’s product at every diesel fill up, and he swears by it as being effective in his old Mitsubishi 2 litre diesel truck, but the bg245 is too expensive to do that. The shell v power diesel fuel did not help my car. I think it makes sense that during winter months, when engine does heat up enough on short trips, then the carbon soot deposit problem gets quite serious and can eventually trash your car.

@moremolecules
@moremolecules 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Tomasz, this is a really interesting point and thank you for the comment. Unfortunately I have not measured the fuel pressure before and after to address this. Nevertheless, I do not think this is happening. Why? I am having a second go at this with another injector cleaner. What I did notice is that with all injectors the return has been gradually increasing with time, so they are getting more blocked with time. It is unlikely that the fuel pump is decreasing its output that drastically with time. I'm not saying that this cannot account for some of the increase after the injector cleaner, it is possible. As far as I remember last time I checked the fuel pressure it is fairly constant and it does not fluctuate much. Really interesting point, but if you had posted the comment 2 weeks ago I could have done something about it.

Great video. Hate seeing the typical video of people using these types of cleaners and then subjectively describing the results with now facts. Could the temperature of the fuel, engine or atmospheric conditions have played a part in the difference in results? Out of interest how many miles did you do with the cleaner in the tank? Also have you heard of people using two stroke oil with the diesel? I think there was a study done where I think 10% added to fuel and they found the it helped reduce wear on the injectors.

Hi Devinder, I am also always annoyed by people just claiming that it works and it is always the usual: "I can feel there is more power, less fuel consumed, pulls much better, etc.". I think I went on nearly a full tank of diesel. I checked and it was ~640miles with the cleaner. Probably could have gone a bit more, but I do not like to go too low on the fuel in the tank, all the dirt at the bottom might get sucked. I have heard about the two-stroke oil, but I am a bit apprehensive to use it. Out of my interest, I will probably do a few other injector cleaners, as it is relatively easy to test. The problem is, as you have mentioned, I cannot quite control the temperature, driving and atmospheric conditions, etc. But for a DIY (non-lab test) is probably as good as I can do it.
