How do you feel about working from home? 🤔 I thought I loved it but then it felt like too much of a good thing. For me the key to a good workspace is flexibility and GOOD PEOPLE. How gen Z of me I know. Anywho, I hope you have a great day! :)

@@Johnny90sk A couple of my friends have the same thing. They both say there's no reason for it, they can do their jobs just fine without having to sit in an office. And both either have teams or supervise teams, which are all across the country, so they're not even there to maintain their connection with their co-workers. And they live 30 mins and an hour away from the office. So dumb. You'd think these companies would realize the infrastructure costs...

There was a study done in Germany before Covid which worked out that once a commute takes more than one hour, in order to maintain the same work life balance, for every additional 15 mins on your commute you needed an extra 10,000 euros per year in salary to compensate (I assume to hire in someone to clean/childcare etc).

After I retired I realized my career was not about the work itself. It was about the interactions I had with my coworkers and clients. The job was literally just the vehicle that put me in front of 100’s of people whose job it was to teach me big and small life lessons. It was a real matrix moment and I didn’t realize it until after it was over. Surround yourself with people who challenge you and teach you what you are here to learn in this lifetime. Never isolate, even when it’s hard and your coworkers are driving you crazy. That is when you learn the most. The job is merely a conduit. Nothing more. It’s not important. The people are what is important. The people are the thing. The job is not the thing. As always, a very thoughtful video. 😊

Idk, lots of jobs are pretty important and fulfilling in their own right. Sure, the people surrounding you might be a big part of you doing that job right and so they're still included in that. But I imagine a microbiologist solving the right way to make an efficient biodiesel cares more about the global impact of their work than the individual people. Same for a politician fixing social care for entire states or nations; probably cares more about the people they'll never talk to than their coworkers and opposition that they talk to all day. Same for an architect designing public infrastructure or a computer scientist creating new optimised technology. The people are usually a part of the solution, but they're not necessarily what your passion and effort get poured into.

@@Greenlights111 Hmm that's tricky. I know some libraries have private rooms you can reserve for free for calls. That might be a good option so you get the quiet company of other people/ white noise to help focus. Or community centers if you have those near you. I try to change up my work location 2-3 times a week, so office one day, work from home 2 - 3x and then the other day(s) would be a third space like the one I mentioned or at a friend's place.

I just watched this and the 30.000 steps/day video back to back; I have to say that the biggest difference for me going back to my very corporate office after lockdown was that I get my daily 10.000 steps "for free" by walking to and from the office. (And here, I absolutely realize that being able to live less than 2 km away from my place of work is a bit of a privilege!). These walks to start and end the workday is such a great opportunity to draw a line between work and home. What really did it for me was that I had to keep my WFH setup in the bedroom, meaning that I spent 2/3 of every day in one, tiny room in our house. That was really taking its toll mentally!

I didn't mind working from the office pre-covid, but now I hate it. If every team at my workplace had a designated room maybe it would be different, but an open space office sucks. Can't focus on the task at hand because everyone around talks about something else. Not to mention having to waste 1-1.5 hour a day on commuting. Now I hear we'll get an increase of required days in the office (currently at 2 per week).

Same for me. The distractions of people coming by to say hello, walking by my office chatting, or stopping in to ask a question of either me or my office-mate, is really difficult. And then there's the hour commute each way. No thanks. I'll be holding on to my desk at home as tight as I can. They'll have to carry me and my desk, kicking and screaming, in my pajamas, to work and home each day LOL.

I write code for a living and my desk is one of four hot desks outside the tea room. The staff have a daily huddle literally one foot behind me. The noise is so intense and distractions so constant that I literally cannot do my job in that space. I'm wasting their money there, but they like to see my face. So I just accept that I have to do all my mindless, repetitive tasks in the office and actual work on my work from home days. Sometimes I think the noise will drive me mad, though.

BIG difference between working in an office, where all contribute to the overheads but none is "management", and nobody answers to someone else in a superior, walled-off space with nicer furniture, outlook, and salary, and working in the typical hierarchical office where your time and tasks are under constant observation by someone who controls your livelihood. I completely agree with the points you made, and hope that office culture can become a shared place of equals, setting their own tasks and timelines, rather than the hideous, clique-ridden, top-down crap I have experienced at times. Casual conversations and interactions with others are so important for our sense of wellbeing and belonging in our community.

This is true! A self-employed person choosing to work outside the home is VERY different than working for a corporation and being forced to go into an office where every moment is watched and micromanaged and there is no flexibility. I initially felt guilty about doing things like loading dishwasher or taking my breaks on the couch watching TV, but now that my workplace went to a hybrid model with two days a week in the office I see that I waste way MORE time with interruptions from co-workers, idle chit chat, and general distractions from being forced to work in an open floorplan with no privacy or quiet spaces. I enjoy seeing my teammates, but a couple of times a week is enough! I am more productive at home in the quiet, without distractions, and with the flexibility to structure my day to include things like loading the dishwasher. However, I have made sure to structure my work-from-home routine to include a clear time to start and stop work and to confine “work” to just one space. That keeps my work from spilling over into my family time and from transforming my entire home into my workspace.

@@makariespe maybe if you had a designated room ('office') in your home? I have my 'work setup' there with my desk, monitor, walking pad, mouse, keyboard camera, etc., so I don't even have to put anything away. It's convenient, the commute is non existent, and it simulates going to an office. At the end of the day, close the door and work is behind. It really does something for my brain. I know it's a privilege, but consider it for your next move. If you rent, see the additional cost of this extra room as the monthly co-working space cost.

However, after watching you point out the pros and cons from the POV of someone who has worked at home for years, I reevaluated and I’m thinking instead of jumping the gun to find a 100% remote job, I feel like what I’m really missing is variety in my days. So I’m going to start off my asking my boss if I could maybe take more assignments where I can do hybrid work or just get out of the office, and or look into hybrid work instead if I do decide to go for a new job. :)

Like many in the corporate world, my company went WFH at the beginning of covid and has been ever since, so a little over four years now. You bring up some excellent points and I do definitely feel the isolation factor sometimes (though my company is also very strict about overtime, so working longer hours hasn't been an issue for me), but I also love the 2 hours of my day I get back rather than having to commute. I'm much closer to you in terms of responsibilities outside of work (no kids, etc.) but it has definitely worked for me. Different strokes for different folks, the important thing is every person finding the best way to maximize their happiness alongside the responsibilities of day to day life.

I love this video!! Thank you so much for doing this experiment. I’ve wondered if paying for something like this would be worth it. I find for me, because I live in a more rural area, it would be more inconvenient to have a 30 min commute there, and same amount back home each day. Plus, I find that there’s some days I want solitude, where other days I want socialization. This video was a great reminder for me to mix it up a bit more! For me, variety works great by working from various locations. I think the biggest takeaway for me is that I need to have solid work-start and work-end rituals. Things that help me to separate the work space from my personal space and life.

Your job is extremely creative, and like you mentioned, you don't have dependents or a long commute. A lot of things you're talking about - working all day because you don't have an end point, not leaving the house/going different places, needing to stretch your small talk muscles - very well ameliorated with small children. I don't wake up with an alarm, my kids wake me up, I work a little in the very early morning in a way I NEVER would have in the office, and then i am on fire to get my work done in the afternoon while the weather is still good and the kids want to play. I can take 5 minutes to go upstairs, give everyone a break and a snack, and come back downstairs and that's less time than I took to pee or get a coffee in the office. I am grateful for my job rather than vaguely entitled to it like I was before, and I think that produces better work from me. Since my job is pretty technical, I have things to do and when they're done I can close out the day. If I can do less during the day, and more in the evening or early morning - it's not obvious from an employer perspective, and I am always reachable. It just feels so wonderful. When both small kids don't want to hang out with thier mother every afternoon, or at least are in school full time, maybe I will want to work somewhere in person. But for now, there is nothing that makes me happier than my work set up. I also have a "dedicated workspace" a floor off of the kids' play areas so I have a measure of isolation in that degree too. Only major problem is how messy my office is because I do not want to spend any time in here if I am not working!

After i got seriously burnt out by the at office/on site work for my first years on job market I had to stay at home for a year and a half to deal with my mental health (luckily my husband was able to somehow provide for us). After that I got an office job last year and we had a pretty hectic year, but this year my job duties and lessened work load let me work two days at home and two days at office. As a recovering depressive person this is perfect as I get the calm and quiet of my home with just enough socialization of the office, and, as we all do part time remote work, the office is not overcrowded and I can do my work more efficiently. The office days are filled with stuff that I can do only at office, papers and such, and remote days I can just answer emails and calls from those who are on site that day. I've kinda got the best of both worlds.

I wholeheartedly agree, working in the office is great only because of the people, I started a new corporate job that requires 5 days a week in office - I love the work, I love having time away from being at home and in my sweatpants all the time (they go straight on when Im back), I love the whole culture and everyone just wants to help everyone all the time. BUUUT the commute is killing me - after two years of being in control of my time, its only 1.5hrs a day but if you think about it - that's basically a whole extra work day. I wish teleportation existed, then it would be perfect. Anyway, you do you! Im glad you've found a way to make work more meaningful and fun for yourself. :) Thank you for your service!

Great video, and I really appreciate the disclaimers. I know I hate going into the office because it's more than an hour each way, but I feel so much better if I can walk out of the house and go work in a nearby coffee shop or the library for the day when I'm working for home, and I hope we see more of these community work shares around so they become a little less pricey

I do think it's so particular to the person! I love working from home, and I'd have such a hard time going back to the office. I like being able to play music and podcasts without having to wear headphones all day, getting to take breaks to do yoga and go for a daily walk, and getting to hang out with my dogs all day! I'm also so easily distracted in a social environment: I'll chat all day instead of getting work done. I also have a designated working space (it's in the corner of the kitchen, but that counts!) and times, so I feel like my work day is a separate thing from my off time.

as someone who has worked both, I think a mix is best "for me". I loss all semblance of structure and separation from home and work if I am 100% at home and i'd like the mix to dip into the pros of both. but I think its very individualised concept as my situation is not universal and full time working from home may give the best output for others.

This video changed my perspective completely! I don’t have a job currently where I have the option to work from home but I’ve noticed at school if I do studying there or in a cafe I always feel so much more productive!! Also where do you get your jeans from? They’re always so cute 😁

It really is so dependent on the person, their family, their health, and the work they are doing. I have been considering a coworking space as well, and the cost feels so big! But the lack of balance is really hard, especially when you are your own boss. Major kudos to you for being able to roll out of bed at 9 and get in the office chair. Some days I can, and other days I think time isn't real and I can do anything whenever I want so I should just sleep in, or play with the cat, or talk to my mom, etc. I have 2 kids and when they were younger and the big VID hit, there is no way I could have stayed in an office while they were schooling virtually and we were all in a mental health crisis. Now, even as an introvert, I miss my commute (no more audiobook/podcast time while driving) and I miss having a space that was outside of my control (which I didn't realize until I was typing that sentence...). Like - and office has one purpose - you go there to get work done. My home has 500 purposes. And yes, I totally relate to the snacking. I think you've convinced me! And yeah, no I do not want to be REQUIRED to go to an office. A coworking space is way more ideal than one building where everyone works in the same company. Sorry for the novel. I'm a new, huge fan.

As a uni student (with adhd, it turns out 😅) not working from home has been revolutionary for how i feel on a daily basis. Time doesn't feel real to me anyways (thanks, adhd time blindness) and at home I feel like i could do anything or nothing and my day has no structure. This would lead to ending my days feeling unhappy no matter what i did, and getting to work and staying at work feeling like an insurmountable task. Walking or cycling to a library, meeting up with friends for lunch and going to the gym after my work day has made me SO much happier. Plus, i live in a dorm, so geting out of my one room and establishing it as a place for guilt free rest is so much healthier for me ❤ Thank you for this video!! It felt like a little treat to savour and your content really motivates me to reflect on what makes me feel good and how i can introduce more of that into my life!😊

I think this is very personality dependent too. If you thrive on interactions with other people, it's a good thing. If you're an introvert, then working from home is a dream. And if there are any companies reading these comments, I can say as someone who went from in office to working at home, that it seems people take less "sick" days too. I know I, for one, work more while "at" work, then when I was at the office. (No more people coming to your desk wasting time, taking long lunch breaks, etc. etc.) Anyway great video as always!

I understand the isolation part of this video - though with tough winters here and having to dig your car out of feet of snow, zero parking downtown and what you can get costs a fortune, more added expenses of making my lunch and snacks, having to wear a presentable work attire in an economy where gas, food and clothes even with my govt job I can barely afford in a one income household. I will never work from the office again! 😊❤ though for someone with your circumstances good to see how things went! I like having the choice to change up my day as I would like it to be, workouts, walks, meal prep, setting aside time for friends and family! Not to mention how happier the planet is without the emissions and humans destroying it quicker. 🌎 thanks for sharing your perspective.

Personally for me, working from home was fun during COVID as I got to stay with my family, but then we started to move back working in a hybrid model, currently going in 3 days to office & 2 days wfh. It has it's challenges about the commute time, packing lunch, not being able to do home chores in b/w, colleagues bugging you more often but it is extremely fun as well.

There are a lot of examples here on youtube what Im talking about.

another perspective to raise about wfh is that it doesn't have to be isolating if you "fill your cup" elsewhere. I regularly see friends, go for walks throughout the day, walk to get groceries at least 1-2x per week and say hi to neighbors along the way, train with my run club at least 1-2x per week etc. on breaks during or after my wfh session each day. your 8 hours of working can happen wherever and you can still find social time that is YOUR choice outside of that. not having to use most of my social battery on work interactions (since it's easier for me to do them online) freed up some for other activities I love and wish I could do more when I worked in person. all that to say, wfh doesn't have to be isolating if you're intentional about your free time throughout the day or week 😊

Congrats on finding what works for you right now! I would be interested in a follow up video to see how you feel about it in a few months when the coworking is less novel and more routine. I totally relate to working from home turning the days into mush in terms of work-life balance. I not commuting but having zero separation is less than optimal. For me though, I think the problem could be solved with a two bedroom apartment (assuming the rent is equivalent to a coworking space) or even just coffee shops in the meantime because it's not so much social interaction as it is the lack of time pressure and off-mode. Cheers!

I sometimes dream of calling my boss and saying “I’ll be working from home today.” 😊 I work as a housekeeper at a psychiatric centre (public health care) here in Norway and I went to work every day during the pandemic, I think it really helped make that time a lot less strange and difficult. Don’t get me wrong, it was stressful and often emotionally (and physically!) draining but I really felt like it brought some sense of normalcy during that awful time.

I graduated grad school in 2020 and so my first job was fully remote for two years. As the office opened back up, I found myself naturally going in every day. I love getting to leave my computer at work and easily meet people for dinner after the day. Meeting new people and small talk and having questions answered in person made a WORLD of difference to me. Now I am an extrovert so I kind of *need* to be around people to not turn into a pile of goo but I can't imagine having to work from home again. I totally understand why people don't like working in an office but I do think human interaction and interacting with the community/society you live in are important and working in an office is a very easy way for me to do it.

And collaboration with colleagues is the same either way. My assessment of the matter is, there should be the option of both, and if you're more productive doing one over the other, then that should be what is available to you. Thanks for this ride along, it was interesting to see and fun to watch!

I've been working from home for going on 4 years now and I have and continue to have a love/hate relationship with it. Love not having a commute. Love having access to my kitchen during the day. Love the flexibility with my time. I used to have to take the day off if I needed to meet a repair person, now I'm here. I sometimes go on my run during my lunch hour. But the hate part-- I feel so isolated, I feel so removed from the mission of the org, and feel borderline depressed about work all of the time. All the fun things about my job disappeared when they sent us home, just leaving the day to day grind. I know that's not everyone's experience and I certainly am not someone who lives to work-- but it really feels frustrating to have to spend this much of my day on something that feels so draining and unfun. It looks like my organization is moving to a hybrid style (2 days in office, 3 days at home) and I thin it might actually be very good for me!

I definitely notice that breaking the day up into recognizable segments, makes the days feel way longer, but not in a bad way, more like I'm fully experiencing my day if that makes sense. I find that in order to feel like I've actually experienced the full day, I need "book-ends", aka sort of time-stamps, to mark the passage. Another aspect for me is that I feel like I have no time for things, if each day is sort of "fit it in" without those time-stamps. My day is 16 hours long no matter what, but having a clear time free, like the after work example you gave, suddenly I feel like I have more time. And after doing that thing, I may find I have an hour before bed, to do house chores or something. Luckily, I do work from home, but my hours are set for the most part, so my work day doesn't feel like it's 16 hours long. I know I need to get stuff done in that time, so I'm focused on it, and rarely work outside of those hours, unless I can't avoid it.

Totally not the topic of this video, but after i've just seen your bike video today i was basically bing-watching your videos. They're great and fun to watch! What i actually wanted to mention: 8:40 just putthe bike on the back wheel and lift it up afterwards. Makes it much easier! I commute by bike and train. During the summer i see so many people trying to hang up their bikes in the bike coach of the train by lifting their heavy e-bikes directly up and struggle and nearly fall once the train sets off instead of just leaving the back wheel on the ground as long as possible. But i guess, since you took up cycling i guess you have found out by now... 😅 Oh, and seeing some of the images of your runs and walks definitely makes me wanna go to BC even more (it's not like it was at the top of my bucket list anyways...) And I do think there is a pretty big difference between renting a co-working space and working in an office of your company. Many of the things I don’t like about going to the office, would not apply in a co-working. E.g: people approaching you with random requests, feeling like your boss is monitoring your progress, having to eat lunch with people you don’t like etc.

And they have us on a hybrid schedule so it’s so annoying working some days at home and some in the office. I have to get all my things ready the night before. I have to be in the office by 7am so I don’t have time to get to work out, or make breakfast etc. ALSO, for my job, I’m having to deal with customer info so I can’t just go to a co-working space whenever I want. I’m just limited to my apartment.
