This is when I knew society was doomed: In High-school in study hall we were talking about health and weight loss, mostly a group of b-list JV boys like myself A girl piped up that to stay thin she did "that thing they taught us in health class, you know, where you throw up everything you eat." We all stopped and explained as calmly as we could, knowing we could be saving her life if we got her to hear us, that this was an eating disorder and she needs to stop and find help She listened to health class enough to hear "throw up and lose weight" but tuned out before she could hear "unhealthy," or "eating disorder" until we spoke to her. ... In college I was at a friend's house arguing against the Bible, I made a really strong point. I saw his GF was visibly having a crisis of faith, this was the Deep South where many people had never met an atheist or heard any argument against their religion in their life. He made a counterpoint with a confident voice, she sat back, looked comforted and said, "oh, thank God" I simply opened his Bible to the relevant passage and proved his point not just wrong but ridiculous. He said "oh" and read the passage carefully, now he was having a crisis. He then shook his head and went back to looking for a way to argue. I glanced over at his GF, I saw she stopped paying attention when she heard what she wanted to. She had shut down, I knew nothing would get her to think. ... People do not listen. People hear what they want to hear. Democracy required a well informed and well educated public - social media gives people a tool to never have to become that.

In Canada my brother is a or was a conservative, until I started asking him questions. I asked him which party brought in social security, health care, dental care, Employment Insurance etc. all programs he uses now or has used. He did not know. I mean KZbin keeps trying to recommend me weird conspiracy stuff and far right stuff as well. I know to stay well away from it because I’m not dumb, but I feel like everyone jumps on TikTok while just ignoring the cesspit that this very site has become.

@@Mrchair905 agreed, the domestic socials keep peddling the same nonsense while lobbying Congress to maintain the status quo. It’s all handwringing.
