Exactly my sentiments. I just bought the Slim back in December and so far, even though I love the games I’ve played, there just doesn’t seem to be that many ps5 exclusive titles to really differentiate this generation from the last. Especially considering how long triple A game development takes, which in some cases is longer than feature films.

I think that they'll probably EXTEND the PS5 cycle, specially considering that PS4 already had most of its games coming out in the last 3 years of it's life cycle, if in the PS5 cycle those games are going to take even longer I don't see why they would shorten instead of extending the generation to at least 2028. And PS5 Pro has not even been announced yet, and I don't think they'll release a mid-gen console and shorten the generation right after

2028 is not extending. That's the usual deadline. Ps5 was launched at the end of 2020. ( ps4 end of 2013 to end of 2020 - 7 years).

What console generation was short exactly? Dreamcast/PS2/Xbox/GC was short only because everyone wanted to start fresh, but it was still 7+ years overall just everyone started at different points. PS3/X360/Wii was like 8+ years. PS4/XB1 is 7+ years and Switch will be 7+ years. Hell even PS1 was 6 years 🤣🤣.

I never understood why TV's made the jump so quickly from 1080p to 4k whilst we did make the transition via 720p first. 1440p first would have made more sense for gaming and for the tv manufacturers to sell more tv's in the long run. But heck, I'm not complaining we finally reached endgame level specs.

@@Xero026 Because TV manufacturers aren't making displays for gaming. The primary use case for TVs in living rooms is for watching not only broadcast television but films. TVs have been able to deliver a quality 4K experience for movies for almost a decade now, so it would have been entirely pointless to make a marginal jump to 1440p. There would be almost no perceived difference in terms of picture quality there.

Why do people keep saying stuff like "PS6 is coming soon", what do they expect that console to do different than the PS5 to help Sony's stagnating sales and game lineup 😂? There's absolutely nothing wrong with the PS5 architecturally, it just lacks games, thats something a PS6 won't magically solve, quite the opposite, it will make game development even more expensive and strain the industry even more. Specially because the games being developed...are PS5 games. Like the current gen is just a 2.0 of last gen, the 2018-2020 period had much more games than the previous years, and those were the last 3 years of the main life cycle of the PS4. 2024 already has more games than 2020-23 had, and I would bet that the equivalent of that 2018-20 period would be 2026-28. Even on Xbox 2026 seems like their 2018, and 2024-25 sound like 2016-17 were for Sony, those "warming up" years before the actual best period

I'm guessing what they should do is increase the console life cicles, compare PS3 first games with the latest games. Examples: Resistance Fall of Man, Heavenly Sword (2006 and 2007) with The Last of Us and Puppeteer (both 2013) I don't need a PS5 Pro or a PS6, i need games.

When the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S were being developed and contracts were being signed for their manufacturing, GPU manufacturers weren't targeting the AI / big data market as aggressively as they are now, so I think it's difficult to say how that might affect console release windows and even console specs.

The technology is fine developers need to focus on maximising the hardware where necessary and making good games . There should be plenty of life left in this console.

I think it would be a mistake to do so: MS is at an _all-time low_ in terms of popularity and perceived "brand value", thanks to their constant fumbling. Many people are also still on PS4 and many others feel like this generation has barely started. Considering the *PS5 Pro* is still on its way out this holiday season and Sony's consumer base feels like even the standard PS5 hasn't seen its juice be fully utilized, *Sony can afford to let MS do the first move and initial investment effort in marketing.* Ideally, Sony will hold on to its existing consumer base for a good long while (while promoting the PS5 Pro); _raise the hype bar_ for their upcoming *PS6* hardware AND spread rumors about how *revolutionary* it will be; and then comfortably launch a stronger product than the _"Series X 2",_ 1.5 years down the line (hopefully with a strong launch lineup as well). Ultimately, let us also not forget how the public is very nostalgic for -- and actually WANTS -- a huge generational leap, that feels tangible. It's another argument in favor of Sony NOT taking the first step. Heck, I feel like they could wait 2 years even, after the "Series X 2", to deploy the PS6. They just need to have a strong marketing team and PR, and hold their audience and consumer base with the promise of a capital-R revolution (a revolution which, btw, can literally really happen, if AI for game development fully takes off, and helps a stagnated industry actually DEVELOP MORE GAMES cheaper and faster, which is our current biggest problem now) Sony managed to hold the line when the Dreamcast came, and they should do the same thing again now. The timing is right I think. Let MS do the first move. It has worked before, and it will work again.

That was moreso the case in the past than it is today (although you couldn’t and/or still can’t play some exclusives on PC, so for certain games a console is/was necessary) when graphics and performance have plateaued far more than in the past generations. PC exclusives barely exist now. PC games are made catered towards consoles now. There are no more true PC games, they are just console ports on the PC. Not like it was in the past.

What they mean the end of console generations are the technical jumps between each generation. The evolution of graphics, polygon counts, and hardware performance from ps1 to ps2 was industry changing. The same can be said about ps2 to ps3, and ps3 to ps4. Ps4 wasn't that much of a technical jump from ps3 until near the end of its cycle with games such as rdr2, gow 2018 & ragnorak, and tlou2 pushing the performance and limitations of the ps4 to its limits. Ps5, however, just feels like a ps4#2. There isn't any game on it that truly feels like a true generation leap compared to gta sa on ps2 vs. gta 5 on ps3. The ps5 is much more powerful than the ps4 but there is yet to be a game that truly reveals what next gen gaming can truly look like due to companies needing so much time and money on games that release every 5 or 6 years now.

The problem with having a pro is that it takes away hype from the next console. The next console should have crazy next gen exclusives or people will just hold onto there ps5 or ps5 pro instead of buying a ps6. I have a series x. The problem with these machines is that they are already underpowered when it comes to GPU's. Considering the trend of pushing for hyper realistic graphics, there is only so much power the devs can squeeze out of these machines. I wish we had more gameplay centric open world games like ToTK that utilizes simpler, but still very solid art style and focuses on the gameplay loop and interesting open world.

Im still on PS4 pro, Ive only played Demon Souls and Stellar Blade on ps5 by streaming my bros PS5 on my PS4. There are simply not enough new games (or ones that Im interested in) on the platform for me to just justify buying one and some games that I am interested in are still coming out on PS4.

Considering the PS4 and Xbox One were well supported into this generation, I think you could say it lasted longer than 7 years. I still see people complaining that the PS4 is receiving on going support with plenty of PS4/PS5 releases, even from Sony. That gets some people really angry.

They should definitely extend its life because we all kind of missed out when no one could get a PS5 for about 2 years into the pandemic because of stock shortage and scalpers. And I feel that from now developers need one or two more games worth of research into the PS5 as well as new technologies like Unreal Engine 5 to really see what this gen of hardware and game engines are capable of.

There's a reason why Sarah Bond has mentioned the next generation twice now, first time during that Xbox podcast and then their showcase. This generation of consoles has very few nextgen games that take advantage of its potential and new technologies. Few games per year from third party, thus, they will sell less each generation companies and no exclusives either.

I also feel that no one is seriously evaluating video games as a medium and how can we expect new or groundbreaking experiences out of a controller with buttons and sticks and gyro. It seems like adding more and more realistic graphics only results in longer and longer dev cycles and more complicated control schemes from those same button layouts but doesn’t fundamentally evolve the medium itself. VR and AR haven’t really caught on beyond niche audiences. Maybe the medium itself has reached its apex and something else entirely will come to supersede it.

I mean, one of the thing to does annoy me at this generation is that despite we could be reaching about eight years old when we’ll probably get NexGen hardware I feel like they’re gonna support the PS five way longer than that because looking what’s happening with the PlayStation 4 for lastgen a lot of companies are still making games for that console and we’re just starting to see like games no longer support last gen during the half of it’s current generation cycle so I think current gen will probably be here for awhile before we see next gen consoles like the ps6

I honestly can't think of a way to put my feelings into words. On the one hand, I understand hardware eventually needs an upgrade so that developers can create new experiences. On the other, both the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S feel like they have just started to finally get games that utilize their hardware properly. 2028 seems reasonable for an upgrade, but I could honestly see the PS5 going until 2030 or maybe a bit longer. There is no true reason to upgrade the device yet.

One thing I am finding very poor is that on PS5 they haven't yet updated the machine to do something the PS4 could do and helped me being partially deaf for accessibility. Me and my mrs used to be able to watch movies or shows and chat with plugging in a wired headset to a controller each and being able to voice chat on the same machine. I wish the PS5 could do this. It neant I could hear the show better and her.

They need to stop obsessing over insane fidelity. Just make games with decent polished graphics, stylised with good physics that run well. This way, we can have more regular releases of content rich games that come in a full complete package, because all the Dev resources won't go in to making the highest graphical fidelity possible. It's so dumb making games for every generation that are too ambitious for the hardware and take too long. If they just make games that the hardware will swallow with ease, everyone would be happier because we'd be getting more releases.

They're still releasing a ton of games for PS4 and even some games ONLY for PS4 (Marvel Vs Capcom Collection) over 10 years after the release of PS4, and these dudes are talking about PS5's lifespan being cut short.

I feel like the PS5 Pro is going to be called the PS5 Edge; kind of like the Dual Sense _Edge_ . I do hope that PS keeps the PS5 going. It makes no sense to keep reiterating a new console x amount of years. Xbox ... I honestly think they're gonna go the way go Sega and become a publisher/developer only. They've been pushing very hard for Game Pass and more and more games from studios they bought are getting released elsewhere.

At this point, I'll take anything that gets us closer to native resolution. This generation has legitimately made me think my eyes were going bad lol. Everything looks way more blurry than it should, even on quality modes, because everything is being upscaled to a crazy degree from low resolutions. Upscaling is just a marketing term used to make you think you're getting something good. For instance, believe it or not a 480p signal on a 480p monitor is going to look better then that same 480p signal being upscaled to 4K monitor or tv. It's essentially like bringing a photograph within a few inches of your eyes as opposed to a comfortable viewing distance. The photograph doesn't look better basically pressed against your face lol. Everything on this gen of console looks compressed like it's being streamed from KZbin or something. There's way too big of a reliance on upscaling from developers.

I cannot imagine if Sony, who seems like much of the industry to be looking for cuts to spending, would want to burn so much money into speeding up the next console, when the current one has only recently become free of scarcity, and likely is still being made for a loss? Especially when so many of their first-party titles are still in development?

I personally think they should bring out a new console every 5 years I always buy on day 1 anyway with games that are next gen only like they used to be..its crazy the same people who complain about upgrading console will shell out 1000 pound plus for a mobile phone every 1 to 2 years 🙈 oh

Well if the switch2 comes out in 2026 and is just as powerful as ps4 pro or series s like it's rumored to be and If it does end up being as popular as the orginal switch then nobody will have a reason to even buy a series x or ps5 like most games are on both 8th and 9th gen consoles now and if the switch2 is around that power level then developers will most likely still put games on 8th gen if they're putting them on the switch2 which makes the current gen irrelevant and they honestly shouldn't have even released the 9th gen systems yet there is little no difference compared to last gen

What Sony needs to do is make attachments to the PS5 and PS5 slim that can be attached to the PS5 Pro. And turn apps into physical products with their partners, like Google, Apple, Meta and Microsoft.

I'm a PC gamers, but to those with PS5s: look at how long it took them to leave the PS4 behind, and how many actual PS5 exclusives (or timed exclusives) you got so far. Don't rush to buy the PS6.

I keep saying this, but Sony should seriously pioneer the transition from console generation to console model/version. Gamers want to stay on one device and not have to worry about losing their games, upgrading every few years, etc. The PS4 (and Switch) is the perfect example of gamers enjoying what they have and not necessarily wanting the "best of the best" graphics. We just want games!

I think game development time needs to shorten but not in quality. Rather gameplay time. They should shorten the games time to 20-30 hours with average 10-15 hours. Making a game that is suppose to be played for 80-200 hours is just ridiculous push. Sure there can always be outliers but games should be in my opinion 10-15 hours long with longer types 20-30 hours with possible expansion pack down the line if deemed necessary.

No, it'll likely be seven years. and there will be NO PS5 Pro, as I've been saying for months now, with a lot of pushback from people! :P The only reason there was ever a PS4 Pro was simply... 4K media, as everyone called it, the "PS4K". Mid gen refreshes make no sense. Not to gamers, and definitely not to developers. Third party hardly supported the Pro.

The idea of Sony putting off the ps6 until 2028 is fine as long as the ps5 pro coming out is a decent enough hardware boost to keep enthusiasts happy. I don't think I want another drawn out ps3 xbox 360 era where those consoles were painfully underpowered by the end of their life cycle. I think iterative upgrades like the pro work nicely to keep hardware somewhat in pace with what the PC market is doing but also you're not having to ditch the old hardware and eco system every time you do it. But developers having to scale to base hardware means you're still under a certain time frame to come out with completely new generation hardware when new game engines mean basically it can't support base hardware anymore. But I feel like that's a few years away still. Most people are saying is the ps5 pro even necessary but to me it's the thing that's stopping me from spending £1000's on a gaming PC. Because I much prefer the front end experience and usability/convenience of a console over a gaming PC but I also like investing in decent hardware to make my games look pretty. Having a ps5 pro that better supports Ray tracing etc is a big sell for me. I will be getting ps5 pro day one when it releases. I think it's important even to what is considered a typical console life cycle, to release something more powerful and relevant every few years.

I dont feel I have had value for money from this gen yet, all we seem to get is remastered versions of older games, where is the innovation. It feels like the stronger the hardware the weaker the software because of the resources needed to create games to the consols capability.

It takes so long to make these huge games, so by the time it was actually out in the wild it's a generation late. Also, what games does Xbox even need to upgrade for. If they want to wash their hands with series, they at least need new titles releasing that are good and don't get canceled.

Game production is far bigger than PS4 and before it because big AAA games are pushing the immersion/graohics boundary. Which takes a huge amount of time and then because if this alone pre production can take 2-3 years at least for even that Ill be keeping my PS5 but ill be building a new PC next year most likely A PS5 Pro i stil think is pointless

if my rtx 2060 can still run games at 1440p med-high settings then i can assure the ps5 can push for 3-4 more years with proper implementation of FSR or other upscaling methods. but Sony just doesn't want that. they're a console company not a software company

PS5 and XSX are HUGE consoles that have not really been used to their utmost. We've seen the ceiling and the struggle. The way consoles are developed need to change. Their next consoles CANNOT be the same thing but stronger. It's not feasible.

Each console needs a specific look and feel. Not the exterior, but the actual way games are made/game engine. Sony and Xbox have become pc's and have lost any sense of uniqueness and people just are not excited anymore. Maybe tech has got to a point where innovation doesn't exist, but if Sony and Xbox make another PC that just has higher resolution/raytracing, I feel like we are doomed. Maybe stick to 2560 res and amp up texture memory beyond what is needed so that all of the focus becomes art and fx. Can't see a need for an 8k ps6.

Hopefully the PS5 will get its '2007' / '2004' / '2001' year equivalent, around 2025-7 with the PS5 Pro on the market and GTA VI out, giving the industry a shot in the arm in terms of sales. Between now and then, they can work on that handheld, and hopefully put an FPGA in there for backwards compatibility. Ideally PS5 Pro would be delayed by a year, and given a faster CPU/GPU. We need Xbox Live Arcade and PS Minis to make a comeback, with a steady stream of smaller titles being brought over to both Xbox and PlayStation, with a 'standard' release day - like Wednesdays. Court Sega to put Daytona 2 on there with 8 player online, Golden Axe: Revenge of Death Adder, and the other 50 games that are stuck in their Arcade cabinets, such as Outrunners. Those, and the rest of the PS3/XBLA games that are still stuck on the 360/PS3 can come over, along with more originals with much shorter dev cycles. XBLA was a shining light in the 360 era, and countered Nintendo's valid claim that dev times and costs were sharply increasing for full priced software.

Releasing a PS6 soon will hurt them. It won’t sell great, i guarantee it. It would be a mess for everyone and everything.
