I've been saying for years, the BEST hybrid would be a turbo diesel series hybrid. That's what I want to see. Keep the 6.7 as an option, but also offer a small diesel with a hybrid system. Have the diesel function as a generator only, not connected to the wheels. This way it can run at two fixed rpms. One rpm for maximum efficiency and when the electric system is seeing high demand, the diesel can switch to maximum power. It can also run in EV only mode if it's not hauling/towing.

Yep and plenty of space between the frame rails for a decent sized battery for around town driving with an PH/EREV version. 100 km in winter should be more than enough for most folks to get around town on electrons only. Then when towing or hauling fire up the diesel for extra power and range.

If I were to predict the build, it would be the 6.8 Powerboost with 445hp, 490ft/lbs, 7.3 Powerboost with 470hp, 550ft/lbs, probably have the over 10k gvw package on the F250, regenerative braking to assist with towing and payload. I can see better mpgs and increased towing, payload wouldn't change much

They won’t bother to release two different gas hybrid powertrains on the Super Duty… if it’s gas it’ll likely just use the 7.3 with a hybrid system.

Andre i love my 22 Powerboost. Powered my house in three extended multi day power outages. Only issue is dismall payload of 1340 pounds in XLT high. If the super duty had better around town mpgs and and a decent payload i am in. But a simple near term fix is to put the 4850 HDPP axle in Powerboost now! Then I can slide in a pop up camper and power ac and heat etc.

The F150 Hybrid is a piece of crap... I've had it for 24 months and for 8 months it's had the engine light on due to the well known heat exchanger issue. For a truck that cost me $80,000 +tax (canadian), I am beyond disappointed and it'll be the last ford I purchase going forward. Took Ford almost 3 years to do a recall on this! Their response to the issue has been infuriating/frustrating. Paying for a new truck sitting on the dealership lot waiting for parts is brutal. If you want hybrid, stay away from Ford products until they have a proven track record.

An Edison Motors approach but designed from the bottom up - high efficiency diesel generator with smaller battery and electric drive-train with all the Lightning features - and not costing the price of your house. It appears to be the most effective way for this class of vehicle with today’s tech. And V2H, V2V output with battery and/or generator. Maybe???
@DavidBrubaker-pi4gj
@DavidBrubaker-pi4gj Ай бұрын
The Edison motors approach uses the smallest batteries that would be useful based on the size of the vehicles. Using a 6C peak discharge rating, a 70 kilowatt hour battery pack with an approximately 75 kilowatt hour 2.8 or 3.6 diesel generator is just about on point for two 250 kilowatt electric motors for their pickup conversion. The battery pack size choice for their single, double and triple axle semis are about on point too. For their single axle semi a 3.6 or 6.7 makes more sense for the generator based on the specs on the website with the 9 liter being a great choice for the double and triple axle. A nice conversation would be a cargo van or minivan with a single 35kw battery pack and a cheaper gasoline engine generator. Glad other people are talking about Edison motors. I hope the ram charger is awesome.

Finally! I've been suggesting this for almost two years now for all the reason you mentioned. Additionally, it will certainly increase the torque proportional with the size of the HDs. So if the F150 powerboost is 70lb ft tq, HDs will be 100 or more easily. May have a 500 hp and 600 lb ft tq minimum, I would say, coupled with the current unburdened 7.3 powertrain. I do however, believe the objective is to reduce diesel production in the future. The 7.3 has displaced some diesels already among the 5th wheel community and if you create more torque and better fuel economy, you really have to ask yourself why buy a diesel unless towing is a lifestyle. Few diesels live their life expectancy if we're being honest about it because on average we like buying newer vehicles every 5 years. So the longevity argument goes out the window also. As a 2020 power stroke owner myself, I get the 1050 lb ft tq attraction (and now 1200), no explanation needed but the future of emissions and the complexity/cost of modern diesels may seal their fate in the not too distant future. On the bright side, at least now, I'm finally seeing some real innovations in gas engines that might make that transition palatable and perhaps more affordable.

I think a hybrid system similar to the PB would be great in a 3/4 ton. My FIL’s PB saved him at a remote build site when his generator died for his roof machine. Luckily he was there because his crew uses the F250 to tow it. I would say a minimum of 7.2kw with a higher output option would make the most sense for a 3/4 ton. I don’t see why it can’t be used for both gas and diesel powertrains? Either way, I hope that’s what ford meant in that statement.

They might do what Edison motors. Diesel electric hybrid where the Diesel is just a generator with electric drive motors. More torque and it would be instant.
@Black-Villain
@Black-Villain Ай бұрын
AFAIK the Edison is more focused on logging trucks, more low speed stuff, shorter distances, etc. Pure serial operation hybrids wouldn't work that great on an HD pickup IMHO. Unless if you use a large battery and reserve most of it for a buffer so it's nearly impossible to burn through it... But then you have a large battery, which adds weight, which adds cost, which reduces payload, which reduces towing capacity, etc. A Serial operation hybrid with a torque converter, clutch disconnect, and smaller battery makes more sense for this application

@moarpwr4414
@moarpwr4414 Ай бұрын
I agree with this as Edison is already going this direction with pickups as well, not just large logging trucks. This is also the same concept as the Ram Charger, which in my opinion should have a diesel generator especially for a HD truck. Diesel is far more stable than gas, and if operating primarily on electric, a more stable fuel that will not go stale would be better. Magna as well, but they produce vehicles for everyone and they have been testing for a while now this exact concept. Sometimes they just build components, sometimes they build whole vehicles. They have videos out there testing on a GM heavy duty tested. They have sponsored Out of Spec in the past, and I believe TFLT has even driven the concept in the past. It makes the truck basically a diesel electric train, and those have been around for over 60 years.
@anydaynow01
@anydaynow01 Ай бұрын
They would benefit from at least running the front drive wheels directly from the engine at highway speeds, eliminates the need for a driveshaft and a bit more room for batteries. GM did a bunch of efficiency research when developing the Voltec system and found it was the best way when in range extender mode, I forget what speed that system couples the ICE to the drive wheels directly, then uses the electric motor for acceleration and deceleration assistance when needed. But yeah for stop and go traffic and low speed around town stuff running a motor generator combo is the most efficient way.

I would imagine it'll be a gas powertrain if anything, probably parallel operation like the Powerboost. Diesel in a hybrid application with US emissions equipment would (I imagine) lead to inefficient DPFs, EGR cooler buildup issues (Toyota had this issue on some of their hybrids in the early 2010's), among other things due to the engine running under less load, running cooler, and starting and stopping regularly. Makes more sense to put it on the Gas 6.8/7.3 and use it to fill torque. Not sure I'd want a serial operation on a vehicle like this either. If you did it, you'd have to have a large battery, and use a lot of it for a buffer. Even then, your fuel economy at sustained speeds (highway) wouldn't be as good as just running it in parallel operation. A large battery buffer would be necessary if you did serial operation because you could very well end up in a situation (especially with a large trailer) where you burn through that buffer and have to rely on converting the power from the engine to electricity then feed it back into the electric motors and you'd end up with severely reduced propulsion... At least that's been the case with every other serial hybrid that's been sold in the US market. We'll see if the new RAM Ramcharger has a large enough buffer to counteract this

@@slaytanic921I have been thinking that putting a Prius drive train in the front of a truck with a different final gear ratio to give it better low end torque and an electric motor in the back axle to assist in acceleration and braking. The Prius engine being used to both propel the vehicle as well as keep the batteries charged up. I have a feeling Toyota might end up doing something like that in a next generation Tundra and just do away with their current power train.

The new generation of hybrids in many vehicles are much more potent, and in cases such as the F150, are actually more powerful than their ICE equivalent. That’s why they are seeing much more acceptance. People made fun of 3-wheel vehicles for decades, and now people love them. Why?
