Great advice. We have a Bullmastif x German shepard and a XL American bully. Currently sick with covid and yesterday they got a bit over excited while toileting and decided to rough play in the mud. So in my sick state I had to bathe them both which meant lifting them into the bath. Definitely hard work and it's small things like that which you don't really think about until you have them. I think it's good to consider what dog breed you can handle but I think more than that, people should prepare to be adaptable. The size of our two sometimes causes issues, especially when they play, but we've raised them right and are just big dopey children.

Nothing but the short lifespan. They are wonderful dogs! Never had any issue with my Ariel, obedient, patient and incredibly gentle. My neighbor lowered her toddler down the fence so she could play with Ariel. When I found out I almost had a heart attack, the size difference was collosal, I was worried but the mother remained unconvinced and still lowered her daughter everyday. Made it a point of being there or remove Ariel from the yard into the house if I couldn't be there. She wasn't a yard dog, it was open for her to exercise or keep abreast of the goings on or the condominium! Fifteen years on, she is still remembered by the neighbors that were children when she was around.

Worst thing about owning a mixed dog: While you get a lot of visual and health benefits of each breed, you also get the health detriments. Our boxer, shepherd, shar pei mix has cherry eye and inverted eyelashes that require three types of drops three times a day.

I agree with this but at the same time I do not because most first time owners will most likely not get something of that size, I have a English mastiff there size can become a problem if not trained well enough to listen. Sometimes they are hard to move if not trained but the size being the worst I understand because I have one and he wouldn’t move till I trained him. But if you want one I recommended learning and getting certain items to help it live.

It's the food costs for me. I have two cats, and their catfood has gone up 70% in price within the last year (they're picky so switching won't work), but they're cats so that's manageable because they eat so little. That Godzilla of a dog would eat me out of house and home.

I am not so sure about NEEDING a HUGE vehicle if you have a huge dog. I had a Scion XA, and my NEWFIE/Lab mix 185 lbs would be my rear car passenger almost daily. And, he wasn't really so huge that our house seemed to be small. We would start out sharing my single bed, but, as the night went on, he'd get PISSED OFF, and would get off of my bed. But, he was my big ole sweet "OOPHIE". His nickname. I would totally LOVE to have a Mastiff, BUT, I am getting older, and, helping an older BIG DOG move around when they are getting older and maybe they are getting sick and/or arthritic, I do really want to make sure that I would be careful enough to make sure that I would be supporting a dog that is of good temperament. I am not so sure that I could car for a dog that is TOO huge though. At least not LONG TERM. I REALLY do LOVE huge dogs, but, long term I can't commit 100%.
