An excellent clear introduction to the concept of self control. The human mind hasn’t changed much in the last thousand years but there is so much complexity and temptation in the world - it’s important to remember that the importance of self control will only grow

Absolutely, evolution takes hundreds of thousands of years; there simply hasn’t been enough time for the brain to adapt to the modern world!

To those who can't resist temptations, read my advice it may work for you guys. Whenever I feel tempted to do something, I will quickly realize that it is my brain that wants it, not me. Another thing is, don't fight the urge, accept it. Many of us fight our urge instead of welcoming them. Just observe it like from a distance and don't judge and just meditate allowing the thoughts to pass. You can also use a journal to write about your mind having an urge to do something and also writing the reason why you don't want to do what your mind wants in the moment. After that, I promise you will have a clear mind and will realize that these urges aren't that threatening after all, allowing you to do what you really want. Although it may take some practice, it will be very worth it in the end. I also recommend you to meditate everyday to increase your willpower.

I totally agree; mindfulness (non judgemental acceptance of our thoughts/feelings etc.) beats ignoring or suppressing them.

Is it similar to positive psychology ?
@MindKnown
@MindKnown Жыл бұрын
Positive Psychology is a strengths-based approach to understanding human behaviour, thoughts and feelings (as opposed to focusing on weaknesses as with the ‘deficit’ model). So having the ability to increase willpower/self-control can be viewed in this way 🙂

I guess I'm a little confused how to exercise this. If I want to quit candy, do I write down " IF I want candy or sugar, THEN I eat an apple"? Therefore eliminating the decision? There's sweets and candy everywhere you go and impossible to keep yourself out of temptation. When I see it, I still have to make a decision not to think about it and buy it, therefore exercising the will power to not buy it. It is exhausting some days to avoid the sugar addiction I have. It's too easy just to have it than not especially when I have so many other stressful things going on.
@MindKnown
@MindKnown 2 жыл бұрын
It's really tough to avoid candy as it's everywhere! I wouldn't try to quit candy altogether as that's unlikely to work. One small step at a time. I would begin by planning for just one situation that's likely to happen, e.g. the next time you need to buy groceries have a plan like 'when I see candy I'll buy fruit instead'. The important thing is you don't think about it, just follow the programme. The first time will be really difficult but you'll feel good about it once you've done it. Hold on to that feeling and remember it for the next time. Maybe even write down what you were thinking and feeling to remind yourself. Every time you do this you'll increase your self-efficacy, which is your self-belief that you can change. Over time, this will become a habit that you don't need to think about. When you slip up, which we all do from time-to-time, show self-compassion and try again! Another thing I recommend is to think about all the ways shops and companies try to manipulate us into buying things, like the freshly baked smell they use to encourage us to buy sweet food or the way they position candy next to the till. Try to draw your attention to these subtle manipulations as it can help to bolster your willpower. Also, try to notice whenever you 'self-licence', e.g. when you say to yourself "I've worked hard today so I deserve this treat." Mind-hacks like these can make a big difference! Good luck and don't give up!

Beautiful video! BUT the ego depletion concept still dwells in a gray zone of psicology, plenty of studies have both found supporting and un-supporting results for the ego depletion model, in fact, there's exists more evidence that denies the existence, and plenty of meta analysis of hundreds of research and experiments fail to find such ego depletion effect (still lovely video! I enjoyed it fully!)
@MindKnown
@MindKnown 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! The ego depletion paradigm has definitely lost some of its support in recent years. I’d like to do a longer video at some point to address all the evidence. Self-control is a fascinating area of psychology 🧠🙂

Nice educational video about mental health. I am looking forward to the new topics you'll cover :) Also, regarding the marshmallow test, the socioeconomic background is thought to be a factor as well. Nevertheless, it's not very useful to entertain this idea to increase willpower, so I understand why it isn't in the video.
@MindKnown

Thank you! Yes, you’re right about other factors; it’s a tricky task choosing what to include and exclude from a 5 minute video! 🙂
