Willy Kambwala: United's Young CB Powerhouse 💥

Willy Kambwala started against Liverpool at the age of 19, and he looked like one of the best players on the pitch. The young lad set the Premier League alight on Sunday, and for good reason. He was aggressive, intelligent and looked every bit a United player through and through, diving into tackles and keeping his challengers in check. Kambwala rose to the challenge against Nunez. He got on the front foot whenever he could, and showed a conviction that just has to come with the toughest game in English football. Let's have a talk about him...

Would be lovely. But this Saturday against Bournemouth marks the point where Martinez has MISSED as many games for United through injury as he has played... The biggest problem for the future is that he's done his metetarsal and that's not a break that "heals back stronger". Once that happens it's essentially a ticking clok till it goes again. Could last years before it goes again but he do it in training a week back from his latest malady. I really rate the guy, he's a fucking joy to watch, and I'm gutted for him with his bad luck. But we can't rely on him as a full season player.

Impressed since his debut. Been calling out for him to play instead of rushing injured defenders back too quickly. Someone called it on one of the live stream chats. If Martinez is fit don't play him yet, we played him and he got injured. I'd rather see what our youth can do then rushing back injured players. Kambwala is good; but not there YET. But he has overtaken Lindelof at CB for me. He still has Maguire, Shaw, Licha and Varane ahead of him. As Evans and Varane leaves; I would rid Lindleof as well; something ETH really should have done rather than pushing Maguire out In with, Todibo to start with Licha, in with Hermoso to be back up to those Maguire and Shaw is still needed at LB. And maybe bring in Anselmino to partner Kambwala in gunning for the 3 CBs above them

Big Willy should be played against Bournemouth on Saturday ,no question, him and Slabhead paired up really well against the dippers. He also shows something that a lot of players at United don't show, passion and a love of the shirt he's wearing, take note Rashford.!! Until Martinez is fully fit and firing , McGuire and Kambwala although i'm not McGuires biggest fan you can't deny him stepping up recently, he still gets caught on the half turn but even that has been reduced. We've been here before with Tuanzebe, played amazing against Mbappe and PSG only to be benched for players who've not had such individual performances before and after since. Amad had a great outing and he's not been seen since, that problem is squarely on management with favourite syndrome

Especially Tuanzebe, Ole really ballsed up that one.. he had a window and all he needed was nurturing the potential, yet he benched him for mediocre centerbacks in Maguire and Lindelof. I get that it’s tough for any manager at United to bring through youth because of an underperforming team, but they have got to be braver. Sticking with players who’ll never up their game shows the manager lacks the cajones to develope and improve the overall squad.

I understand what Stephen is saying but oh man Kambwala was class. Defensively excellent didn’t put a foot wrong and on the ball looked calm and kept moving and for a CB that’s all you have to do that’s a good days work. Interesting one you didn't mention is also once they get that first start is how many probably fail behind the scenes in training, no longer are they giving that extra 5-10 % as they are now 'first team players' and think they have made it, the ones who continue to make it treat training like its first time they ever trained in 1st team.

He’s definitely second choice to Martinez and a new CB signing just cuz I’d like to see him grow into the squad more… the future is Garnacho, Hojlund, Mainoo, Mount, Martinez, Kambwala, and veteran players like Bruno to shepherd the academy players into maturity. All Garnacho needs to learn is to pass. What other team has FOUR starting players from their Academy? This is looking good. Love to see him and Maguire in a footrace lol :p. By playing him, we could actually attempt to play a high line and compress the pitch in the opponent's half and fill the gaping hole in the middle we when press normally. If he's comfortable defending horizontally (In the channels and close to the touch line), and he looks like he is in the Liverpool game, we can have our fullbacks press the opposition's fullbacks from goal kicks.

As long as he’s fit I’d like to see him given a run right until the end of the season. So we know where we stand with him and what we can potentially expect next season. Very likely we will loose Verane. Maybe one of Maguire or lindleoff, Martinez has played about 6months of football in two seasons. Our defence needs a major overhaul and we need to know if Willy can be a big part of it or a fringe player.

Hopefully he swims. I like how EtH is integrating these young kids. It's just unfortunate they get rushed due to injuries, but I think we need to slowly develop him and not throw him in the deep end like we did with Mainoo. Mainoo has been a revelation, but I'd like for him to be protected more. Same way Camavinga, Tchoumeni, who are quality players were slowly integrated into the squad. Unfortunately the current United environment doesn't allow for that.

Kambwala isn't exactly a shocker is he? He'd captained frances' under 17 side before we signed him from Sochaux. At the point we signed him PSG were after him and he also turned down the scousers for us. I'm pretty sure I'd read at the time that Juve and a bunch of other big European clubs were interested as well. All of that is no guarantee of anything, obviously. But his signing 4 years ago was seen as a pretty big deal, he was one of the big European prospects at cb. He still has a lot to do to make it, but the kid has always had fantastic quality; he's a classy player. If he can keep his feet on the ground and continue to apply himself, I've no doubt he can become a top player.

I think you give him a run of games in the league now until end of the season, see how he does, save Martinez and Varane for the FA cup. Whack in Evans, Maguire or Lindelof in alongside him.
