What most people didn't get was the metaphor of a creator giving an everlasting thing, (gobstopper)to have it returned willingly, slugworth is the devil, etc. In the end he gets to go up into "heaven" in the glass elevator. Lots of symbolism in the movie, most people missed it. I did.❤

Professor sluggworth is not the professor slugworth. If you watch the film carefully that man works for Wonka. When it gets to the end Charlie is told he lost because he drank the pop. Disheartened Charlie gives back the everlasting gobstopper and in which Wonka calls him back. And explains that he had to test his heart to see the win and he replies that the guy worked for him.
