Windows 10: On a NETBOOK

[UPDATE] I no longer recommend installing Windows 10 on netbooks, specifically these old single-core models.
How well will Windows 10 run on the pretty much forgotten but still functional netbook?
Windows 10 is a free upgrade for those running Windows 7 and 8.1 so why not?

[UPDATE] I no longer recommend installing Windows 10 on netbooks, specifically these old single-core models. Windows, and everything else for that matter, are now more resource intensive than ever before. Windows 10 32 bit now uses 1GB of RAM idle, web browsing is now more CPU intensive, and the 1024 x 600 screen is just too cramped. Technology just progress so fast.

I just dig out an old HP mini 311 (N280, ION LE, 3GB DDR3 RAM) and throw in an old 120G SSD, upgraded to windows 10 1709. It didn't feel off too much to a ATOM Z3736F tablet with eMMC storage and 2GB RAM, so I guess it is OK to work as web-browser and very simple documentation usage, still there's slight lag here and there from time to time especially opening heavy loading pages like youtube(ha!). Nothing too annoying other than that. The real pain is that the old ATOM are 32bits and all my other platform are 64bits so going back to find old version applications is somehow troublesome.

The only real problem for my netbook on windows 10 is that the animations are choppy and their is occasional lag. Other than that it's fine.

Yes I ended up using chromium over Windows 10 in my netbook, today's webpage are too heavy for those old single-core ATOM netbooks.

FYI the free upgrade already ended months ago. Also the newer builds (1607) are a lot heavier on the system, thus I cannot guarantee the same smoothness.

windows 10 will only freeze / lag your netbook sytem ( in that spec) in my experience .. but what if you upgrade the ram and switch the hdd to ssd ... i havent try that so just maybe win 10 will work without issues ... anyways windows 8.1 did just fine for me .. i have a Samsung N148 intel atom 2G ram and i use it daily on my gigs i installed music related softwares in it including dj player and editing sotwares it serves me great ... specially now that ive switched to 500Gb ssd ... sadly 2gb is the max for the RAM ...

i try windows 10 pro 32bit on hp mini 1001tu 1.6ghz N270 with a samsung 32gb mSATA SSD & 2GB DDR2 ram it work fine. GMA950 chipset will have all driver installed via windows update.

Nowadays, Windows 10 is preloaded on netbooks. The one I have was manufactured in 2015. It has a WAY better processor. It has an Intel Atom Z3735F Quad Core 1.3 GHz which is included in a lot of small and cheap computers. 2GB ram. And 32GB of storage with MicroSD storage.

I don't think manufacturers call them netbooks though. Sure they are based on the same idea to have computer miniaturised to 10" laptop, but they want to go away from the name "netbook" as these devices were pretty underpowered, and doing any stuff that was not meant for these devices was pointless (like gaming or watching HD videos).

I tried Windows 10 Creator's Update on a friend's HP Mini. Atom N2800, 2GB RAM. After disabling all the animations, removing the live tiles, and disabling the wallpaper, the netbook ran ok . But a lot of patience is needed.

Try to download and run the Windows 7 atheros wireless driver and see if it works. You can also check the Wi-Fi switch somewhere on the side of the netbook and switch it on.

So do you just use the licence key that your WIN 7 had? I have a Toshiba NB305-N310 netbook with XP, just did factory out of box restore. I have a WIN 7 licence from an dead Dell laptop I was thinking about using that licence to upgrade to WIN 10 on the netbook to test it out. How do you create bootable USB with the ISO (?) file to install WIN 10 . They say the upgrade to "accessibility" version (same thing) is still working. Thanks !!!

The free upgrade already ended July last year so I can't guarantee if that will work. Also the licence key of your old Dell is most likely locked to that laptop. Anyway you can create a bootable Windows 10 USB using the "windows 10 media creation tool" or with a software called Rufus + a Windows 10 ISO.

download MediaCreationTool from microsoft web site its lets you download the win10home edition then start the win10home image from other drive not from the c: drive like a flash drive or other partition then select upgrade then its install with the same license you have in win7starter

Windows XP is still more responsive but no longer a supported OS. I haven't compared it to 7 but it should be the same

***** If you are doing a clean install, you should check if the drivers are compatible with windows 10 first. Otherwise you should be able to check in the "Get Windows 10" report to check if your pc is ready.

Ahaha i already try, i install the last one available for Windows 7, but when i restarted the netbook, i had a BSOD after insert my password, so i had to delete the driver in safe mode..

I did a bit of searching and the Intel GMA 3600 of your netbook lacks drivers even for Windows 8, let alone Windows 10. Intel seems to have ignored it. I honestly didn't expect this to happen because the test netbook in the video, which uses the much older GMA 950, had drivers and is working properly. I recommend rolling back to Windows 7. Go to Start > Settings > Update and Security > Recovery > Go back to Windows 7. Sorry man

You can get Windows 10 for free and not activate it. It runs as a trial version forever, that is what I am doing on a used laptop I bought used, but I would not use Windows 10 on a netbook. I have a netbook and I am using Linux Lite. It uses about 360 megs of RAM at idle, any Linux distro is much lighter than any Windows distro and it is free. Linux used to be hard to use, I know, I tried, but if you use a distro aimed at new users it is very easy to use and does all basic tasks, if I can use it anybody can. For a new user I would use an Ubuntu based distro, Lubuntu is a very light one. Mint is good, Linux Lite is good, Ubuntu is good. I would use a light desktop like xfce, the default ones are very graphical intensive. Try it, it is free, and if you don't like it you can always put Windows on it. I use Windows on laptops that have lots of RAM and fast CPUs, a netbook doesn't, so I use Linux.

Windows 10 runs like crap on my asus x102ba with 4gb of ram, a 1ghz dual core amd a4-1200 and a 500gb 5400rpm hardrive. and when you upgrade the touchpad stops working and you have to reinstall the driver.

Windows 7 support will end in 2019, I'd recommend Using Windows 8.1 with Classic Shell (or Windows 10 LTSB, but I haven't tested it on slower computers) on 1 GB RAM device, if you have 2 GB and more I'd reccomend using regular Windows 10 though.

multitasking as in running word processor, notepad, calculator and web browser is pretty ok on any semi-modern device (like up to from 10 years ago), on the other hand if you run web browser, media player and a game it will most likely lag as fuck. Also if you would be crazy enough to use netbook in 2018 i'd recommend to use any other operating system which is not Windows, Ubuntu or any GNOME/KDE based distro and it will run very fast (well maybe except loading resource-heavy websites, or watching youtube videos in 720p/1080p).

When I had a netbook that was from 2009, it had no problems playing 480p videos on KZbin, although any higher would just be unplayable. I had similar results on Windows XP and some kind of Linux distro (I think Ubuntu MATE). Of course I wouldn't recommend using Windows 7 (or higher) on a netbook if you care about performance.
