Just so that everyone that comes to this video in the future; this does work, but in my case when I followed the steps to the tee, I didn't have to reboot. I went to windows update and it said "You're all up to date" How that happened is anyone's guess, but it automatically let the updates through when all that other data was cleared. But it's great advice.

@@PointingToNull no I didn’t. I tried everything in the video and the linked page. Still nothing worked. I started to see that less and less programs would actually install without an error. I also discovered that somehow my safe boot was also removed. I’m not sure if all of this happened after upgrading my Intel Bios. I tried to reinstall safe boot that but also had no luck. So this week I just created a new Windows installation media. It reinstalled fine and was able to keep all my files in a Windows old file. I had no viruses so not sure what happened. But it all works fine after the latest Windows creation media

I tried the assistant tool.. it downloaded, rebooted, and kept rebooting, finally said putting computer back to old settings or something.. I tried this method as well.. stopped both services, deleted files in the folder, rebooted, went to run windows update.. nothing happened. just click check for updates and it goes away. You may have to kill the services a second time... Sometimes they restart right away, which then locks the files in the software distribution folder. If that doesn't work, then... that's weird!!

My issue is as follows, I would appreciate a reply for help sir. My PC says “update and restart” or “update and shutdown” however whenever I choose these to turn off my PC nothing happens, it just turns off as normal and never even attempts to update. If the fix in this vid doesn't work, then I'd try this: 1. Click start, type 'command' 2. Right-click Command Prompt and Run as administrator 3. Type commands one at a time: a) sfc /scannow b) dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth That should fix just about everything. Fingers crossed!

@@ScottiesTech thank you so much for your reply and help! :)I ran the scan on its own and it said it repaired the files that were corrupted. Reboot, same problem. So then I ran the scan again and Repaired corrupted files again, but this time I did what you said in the video alone with the system scan repair and still the same issue. However now when I reboot it says “getting windows ready” before shutting off and when the bios screen shows it says “updating system 100%” But still the windows update screen doesn’t load and it never says “updating” or anything. Do you have any other ideas? Looking forward to hearing from you :) thank you!

Thanks for the information Scottie but UNFORTUNATELY it didn't work. I also tried and followed every step in your other online guide and disabled all anti-virus and firewalls as well as removing disks and other peripherals but still no joy. It gets ( as always ) to 98% and stops and gives me the, now VERY FAMILIAR message and undoes the updates. Unless you have another idea I'll have to either live with it as it is and no future updates or I'll have to format and hope that that fixes it..any fresh ideas you have would be most welcome but unfortunately I'm not a techie and what you've outlined thus fart is about as techie as I can do. Hi everyone, none of this worked for me and I spent hours trying to fix the problem. I finally fixed it when I read someone's comment saying they updated their BIOS. Mine were last updated in 2017. Once I updated the BIOS I ran the ISO file and installed Windows 10 keeping my files and apps and it was finally fixed.

I cant even open the services app: MMC cannot open the file C:\\Windoes\system32\services.msc This may be because the file does not exist, is not an MMC console, or was created by a later version of MMC. This may also be because you do not have sufficient access rights to the file.

CAN ANYONE HELP ME PLEASE??? This did not work for me at all. I don't even get an error message, it just absolutely REFUSES to update. Its been happening for a week now and I have no idea what is wrong. I click the windows icon in the bottom left corner and click power. Then I click "update and restart" and it begins restarting. It restarts, then pulls up my laptop manufacturer's loading screen. After that, another loading screen pops up that says "please wait" for less then 30 seconds and then it just goes to the sign in screen. It restarts, but just completely skips the update! I think my laptop might be screwed at this point.

I had that happen once. What I did was reboot, then try the whole process again. That made it so that Windows Update stopped whatever it was doing, and I could clean everything out before it started again.

When I watch movies on my computer a green screen would show up. Can't Ctrl +Alt delete so I have to power down the tower. Also the tower makes a bit of a noise. Not sure why. If you dusted inside the puter case (especially the processor cooling fan), then it might actually need a new fan. They do wear out and eventually die. It might not be an overheating issue, though. The green screen might mean you just need to change something software wise - such as updating graphics drivers. You can find what kind of graphics card / integrated graphics you have by looking in Device Manager under Display Adapters.

Great video but my Software Distribution folder wouldn’t delete a few of the folders inside of it because it said they are in use somewhere else. Hopefully the Windows Update retry will work anyway. If not I’m lost. Every time I restart my computer it still says working on updates - 35% complete. Ugh!

Why can things not be simple like it was years ago this is ridiculous to have to go through all this to do an update thanks for sharing I will give it a try if I can figure this out I’m old-school lol

Hey Scotty i cant delete the files because it says this action cant be completed because the file is open in windows update

Usually, that means you must either: 1. Stop the WU service stuff again, or 2. Reboot and then try again (to make sure WU isn't 'doing stuff'.

Thanks but this did not help. It says my computer needs an update since I have not done the recent one. But when I try to do it and I click update and restart it restarts but does not update also if I go to update in settings it also says I need important security and quality fixes so I can’t be a mistake.

It don't let me delete the software distribution folder

In Software Distribution the DataStore and ReportingEvents.log won't delete. It says file in use and the action can't be completed because the file is open in Windows Update. But I haven't been able to update this crappy Windows 10 in months and I can't use my printer.

Sometimes the services restart before you can delete the files. If necessary, you can stop and DISABLE the services (temporarily) and then reboot. Then delete files, and then re-enable the services. I've had to do that before.

It won't let me delete the empty folder titled DataStore and the last folder dated today Reporting Events Text Document 836 KB. Is that not good? It looks like I'm a 1%er. Oh well. Black screen of death for me again.

When updated it repaces the files again, so you wont lose anything !

when i go to my windows folder theres way more stuff and i dont want to delete anything important
