Wing Chun's Siu Nim Tao Stance is its most important foundational aspect of the whole system. It is the building ground for the entire art and once done CORRECTLY it opens the door to "Nim Tao" and the internal cultivation of the art.
In this video Nima is merely talking about the correct alignment and balance of the joints which is the first step. After that through application of 'Taigung' and 'Seng' the practitioner will be able to mindfully decompress the joints and begin to cultivate the Nim Tao State!

Great video: this is one of the most important, but hardest concepts to convey. The pelvic tilt is the "idea" of effortlessness, the rising of the spine is the idea of "rising", ALSO being "erect" like an extendable ladder. Within the form are MANY ideas incorporated. It should be as if we are holding a ball at our "seat". I often say it's like we're sitting and standing at the same time, like a very tall stool, seated on the edge. One thing which helps me is to swivel my hips... if the movement feels smooth and effortless I know I'm closer to the proper stance. The goat stance also reinforces the "wedging" aspect of Wing Chun and the "line" of force [our knees should point in the direction of our strikes]. Knees in also activates the proper hip, spine swivel; we don't point our feet, instead we "steer" our hips [turn the horse] using the outside hip triggers and with a small inward squeeze around the tailbone/spine. Our feet and direction shift in a very stable, but explosive manner when done properly which increases our speed in short areas. We only move our feet to kick or using such footwork as the inward crescent [bypassing step] upon contact to break their knees and structure [take downs]... in essence to move our base into our opponent's base. That's my current view at the moment, though I continue to unearth other incredible concepts hidden in the forms. The traditional system as taught by CST and Ip Man holds many secrets. Thank you for your important and continuing work! Wonderful and thought-provoking as always.

I'm not sure how to feel about the lower body half, especially feet and knees. Is there a feeling of centered relaxation downward under the feet, and outward-opening in the knees, like projecting the relaxation forward in a wedge? Or rather the opposite, relaxing in- and downwards, making weight shift easier? Or is the direction of the relaxion completely directed through the structure to under the feet?
@MindfulWingChun
@MindfulWingChun 10 ай бұрын
Hi Rick, yes the feet are very relaxed (actively relaxed as in other joints of the body) and the knees are an 'outlet' for projecting and triangulating forward in to the apex of the pyramid in Siu Nim Tao

I Have 2 questions. How do you jump in Wing Chun? That is one thing ive never heard much talk about. What the important aspects of it? And Did CST ever do SLT with someone while doing the looking in the eye thing or just do the looking into the eyes thing while someone did SLT on their own?
@MindfulWingChun
@MindfulWingChun 4 жыл бұрын
Jumping would be the same thing as stepping. So decompressing the joints of the legs and spine and intending to launch from the center of mass. And CST didn't do the entire SNT with us while doing the eye looking thing. It was only done for short periods of time each time (i.e. less than 30seconds) to help the student activate Nim Tao

I joined discussion about this in FB IdeaWingChun and i've followed the instructions. I felt my leg's muscle quite cramps but around pelvis and back (lower back; like in your vid said) relax. Would like to share some opinions? Thanks alot Sifu Nima

If you are balanced and not leaning, are you applying Taigung and Seng? If not that is probably the reason. Check out the discussions on the stance, Taigung and Seng on this channel in which CST is talking about them.

I have been wondering for awhile. How do you jump most efficiently in Wing Chun? Is being able to relax and completely expand the joint in your foot necessary? I practice and kind of test things out but I was wondering if you have anything on it.

Jumping would be the same thing as stepping. So decompressing the joints of the legs and spine and intending to launch from the center of mass. Yes the openness of the foot and ankle is important form all movements that require the body to move. Even in static movements such as SNT the relaxation of the feet play a big part

Mindful Wing Chun relaxing my feet and shins is the hard part for me rn. Sometime my hips are sore because I’m relaxing well. But my knees and thighs are never as sore as they use to be. Do you think I just need to keep working my way down my legs?
@truthhurts1884
@truthhurts1884 10 ай бұрын
@@youngkoney9646 try doing your forms bare foot, but first of all, take the stance and just try to feel the entire foot’s connection to the floor, try having the feeling of letting your mass dissolve through the muscle, fascia and bones of the foot. See if that creates looseness elsewhere

Interesting idea about the pelvic tilt concept, what happens when someone wants to do a take down? does the pelvic tilt concept applies?
@MindfulWingChun
@MindfulWingChun 9 ай бұрын
there is no pelvic tilt. that is a misconception and misunderstanding by many Wing Chun practitioners. The Pelvis and spine should be kept neutral! What someone takes you down you should stuff it by redirecting the momentum, going for an underhook or sprawling. That is if your initial strikes dont stop the takedown...

Using this stance on march 21st 2020, some how a ton of chi flooded out of my hands, like a conduit, not sure. When I get into this stance and my elbows are at there sides and my palms are up I can feel this yi or ki or chi flooding out of my hands. cool but strange.

samuel kwok has this forward pelvis locked position with the upper body a bit backward and the hips forward and locked , what do you think about that ? knowing that he s a direct elev from ip man too. What is the right stance then . Cause you see ip man is like that too.

The correct stance in my opinion is when there is no unnecessary locking or tension in the body (but a reasonably active core)

Focus is on activation of Nim Tao and controlling the joints from the ligaments. If you click on the channel that this video is on, you'll see over 100 videos on CST Wing Chun so will get a better idea of how and why is differs from other methods of Wing Chun that's practiced today

But this stance isn't for combat though right?
@MindfulWingChun
@MindfulWingChun 4 жыл бұрын
Exactly. it is a tool to activate all the joints of the legs and teach the practitioner how to focus their mass to the target (this is not easy to believe or understand unless experienced). Of course you wouldn't stand like this in a fight...

Hi! Is the gluteus relax when in wing chun's stance?
@MindfulWingChun

Yes, it is. We want all muscles to be in a relaxed state in this type of Wing Chun. That way enables us to tap into the fascia and ligaments more directly

Without proper body structure how can u expect to generate energy from the ground? & make it flow thru all juntions of the body? Apparently CHISAO is just a drill.. A drill which improves the sensitivity & also helps in many other aspects.. It's not that people role hands in a street fight or even in the ring
@Bevallalom
@Bevallalom Жыл бұрын
@@shaolin7426 in wing chun you don't generate energy/power from the ground. At a beginner level yes, but as you keep progressing you become "shapeless, formless" and be able to generate power even without 'proper' stance. It makes sense. In real fight you may find yourself in a position where your stance is broken.

@@MindfulWingChun I thought it was rather informative. I have not had a very positive encounter with WC. Frankly, I came to the conclusion that this is not how I (personally) am supposed to move, and opted for other martial arts instead. None the less, I think WC is very conceptually fascinating, in terms of bio mechanics. How it applies force, tactile response etc. So I still like to study it theoretically. This was IMO a sensible explanation of the default stance. One which I would have appreciated back in 2005, rather than "do as your told".

I saw some "ving tsun" practitioners training in a park and was bemused watching their stance. Toes pointing in, knees almost touching, I thought there was absolutely no way that was real. Are you trying to just get pushed off balance immediately? It seems that literally any single martial art would have a field day with a stance that broken. So I came to youtube to see if that was how it was supposed to be. Lmfao, what a joke. All those poor people paying money, enjoy getting chopped to pieces by grapplers, strikers and untrained "boxers" all day every day.

I dont think you know what you're talking about dude. Don't try and figure out an art from KZbin vids. This satnce is NOT for fighting or sparring. It is a stance for cultivating triangulation energy and to help relax the lower part of the spine as a starting point to relax the rest of the spine. For the record, I do BJJ in an elite carlson gracie gym. Again, I recommend not to judge an art from the internet and go to a proper teacher and test him out on person. All the best in your journey...
