This Wing Chun stance opening training video will detail (step by step) how to open the stance (horse) and how to chamber the hands.
Opening the stance and chambering the hands in Wing Chun are actions done at the Siu Nim Tao opening before any other sequences. Many beginners to Wing Chun mess up the training stance (especially those beginners training at home) because they don't know how to open the horse nor properly chamber the hands. The level of detail that the beginner must become aware of during the Wing Chun opening sequence is crucial for practicing correctly in order to actually develop.
The Wing Chun chamber is important for developing the correct back and down feeling of the shoulders as well as keeping the elbows lower than the fists. It shapes the way a beginning student stands and therefore stretches and strengthens the upper body for the specific function of Wing Chun. In other words, it creates the Wing Chun weapon.
The proper Wing Chun stance (goat stance), also known as yee jee kim yeung mah, is the Wing Chun training stance used in the first form (Siu Nim Tao) and other WC forms and drills. Learning how to open the stance / open the horse (hoi mah) ensures that the student stays connected to the ground during movement and positions their feed at the proper distance.
Too many waste years not doing proper Wing Chun stance training. Instead, they half-hazardly open the stance without attention to the level of detail required in order to progress. When a beginning student learns to pay attention to the details from the onset, a precedence is set that states that all Wing Chun training must have this same mindfulness and intent.
