Hi, former producer-engineer here. The decision to pitch correct Freddie was made by people who want to sell old music to young people ear trained on pitch perfect vocals since birth. I’m so glad you’re speaking out about this. I am sick of seeing (and hearing) this pitch correction epidemic spreading. It was astonishing how alien Freddy sounded with the pitch correction. It took away all of his inflection, as it does with every singer. 95% of a singer’s inflection lies in how they approach a note, what they do when they get there, and how they leave the note. Music is not just a sequence of notes, it’s emotion. A machine can never replicate that.

Queen was “my band” growing up, the only one whose music I would purchase the day it came out. I missed their heyday by a decade but eagerly caught up. What I loved about their early stuff was its rawness and how much they did with so little studio gadgetry. Casual fans point to “Bohemian Rhapsody,” but I encourage them to listen to Queen’s 1st and 2nd albums for examples of their true genius. I was excited when I heard a remaster was going to be available, but thanks to your video I have no intentions of purchasing it. I don’t even want to call it blasphemy, though it’s tempting. As dumb as it sounds, it makes me profoundly sad that they took something so pure from so long ago and turned into a slick, modern-day commodity. My hope is that it occurred without the endorsement of the band, but these are the same people who hired Adam Lambert to replace Freddie, which I will call blasphemy…so who knows. Uh, where are you getting this? The 2009 remasters of the original stereo mixes of the Beatles catalog are still readily available on most streaming services - right alongside the recent Giles Martin remixes of their later albums. And for those albums, the 2009 remasters are usually available under a "Other Versions" section beneath the newer remixes (except for Revolver and the White Album where it's reversed and features the remix in that section). I've checked each one on KZbin Music just to be sure and they're all there. Apple Records has been very good about preservation of that particular catalog and they've never had any intention of having Giles Martin's new remixes supplant his father's original mixes. The 2009 remasters of the UK catalog - which includes both boxsets of the original UK Stereo and Mono mixes - are also still readily available for purchase on Amazon. So, let's not panic. Capitol is even readying a new mono vinyl boxset for release in November of the US versions of their early albums complete with the original 1960's US mixes.

Good reaction. Queen were very meticulous when recording, right from the off and after listening to all their albums from 1973, I've never heard anything from the band that would be 'out of key'. In fact, when you have multiple harmonies, it's the blend of minute pitch discrepanices that create a 'chorus' effect, which is pleasing to the ear. Which kids have asked for this, rather than have the original? None. There is also the issue that Brian and Roger (along with I believe three others) have remixed the first album to their liking. Bri and Rog are only half of the band. The drums although sounding well, are mixed too loud and they've added delay to Freddie's voice in certain parts. (Delay was available at the time, so if he'd wanted it on, that would have been an easy option for Roy Thomas Baker in 73) Some good reverb/echo send bits have also been taken out. All the first album needed was an artistic clean of the canvas, rather than adding new colours. I'll put money on Queen II receiving the same treatment and now Queen have sold their copyrights, get ready for some serious cash-grabs/liberties taken, for new fans. (They also cut out part of the intro where the Bass slides in....can't kids cope with a couple more bars?)

I was just reading an official Queen announcement last week, and in it Brian was going on at length about how he and Roger (I’ll assume John was at least in approval) were so thrilled to finally be able to present their debut album as they’d always wanted it to sound in 1973. And I was absolutely looking forward to getting this release myself. He went on to say that they knew Freddie would be proud of this restoration, that couldn’t have been achieved until the present day with new technology (I’m sensing similarities with how Paul and Ringo were able to complete and release “Now And Then” last year). I cannot believe for an instant, that Brian or Roger would knowingly allow to have Freddie’s voice subjected to pitch correction. There was nothing wrong with Freddie’s vocals, nor was there anything wrong with the band’s performance. The issues were in the recording itself. And THAT’S what I believe Brian and Roger sought to correct with this release. At this point, I’m only hoping that this massive box set and other formats hasn’t yet gone to pressing, and that there’s still time for them to stop this travesty from happening.

I would say there are three people in this world who truly know how Freddies voice sounded like and two of them are involved in this project. Who knows what artifacts were added to Freddies voice during recording. For example tape wow and flutter cause pitch variations. I have listened to this song for 48 years and yes this one is different... Better? Well that's subjective but if two of the original band members are telling me this is what it should have sounded like then that is good for me.

The best way to describe what's happening with pitch correction is like cooking a steak and cutting off all the blackened parts because you want the meat to look and taste exactly the same all the way through. But those blackened end bits are what add to the flavor of the entire steak. You need little bits of these types of imperfections in order to create a meal that isn't "one note" as they say.... which ironically is the perfect metaphor for pitch correcting making a singer sound "one note"

I was sent over her by the Queen subreddit. I actually think the pitch correction might have come from a mastering error or the tape was played at the wrong speed, so his voice was off slightly. Even then it was barely off that a non-engineer and most people won't pick up on it. When I listened to it, I think there is some pitch correction only in a few areas, but they did pitch correct it in a way that it preserved the integrity of the original track as his vibrato is still there. Now the only other thing I can think of which can be issues with pitch correction is that the tapes had degraded over time that when they released the 2011 tracks, I don't think they used the original masters but perhaps a copy that they retained or the label retained. It's entirely possible that when they revisited this recently that if they are working with the original master tapes that it might have had stick shed syndrome which the binders that hold the oxide layer to the plastic layer degraded, so it was screeching. What can result of this is the tape will play at the wrong speed. I actually worked on a mastering project of a album that was recorded in 1956 and had never been digitized except with a copy on 8-track and a vinyl record and after baking the tape I had to pitch correct the entire album and certain tracks actually were recorded incorrectly in the original master, so I had to pitch correct the voices either up or the instruments down, for simplicity sake and to save the family money, I pitched the voice up, and then used an EQ to make the voices sound a little more clearer in the mix. I think this could be the same result for Queen. They are after all working with 50 year old tapes,. and obviously they didn't have quite the same fidelity headphones or speakers that we have today, and with 32bit audio recordings you can get a result of hearing inconsistencies you wouldn't hear when it was originally mastered.

Thank You, Fil, for such a clear explanation of what could have been done to "correct" the song as a whole without disturbing any of Freddie's original performance. This is truly a travesty. To mess with the original performance of any band to "correct" things is to take away the qualities that made that band/artist/performance so compelling in the first place. Autotuning voices, quantizing meters, making sure everything fits in a perfect little formulaic box kills the essential things that make something beautiful to experience. It is the imperfections of the kind this plasticizing of art attempts to do away with are what move us so deeply in the first place to connect with the song/performance. Let's just hope that future generations will still able to easily access the "uncorrected" versions as well.
