I agree! Ringo used his tom toms a lot more than most drummers at the time. Love Me Do was one of my least favorite Beatles songs, and I think the boring drumbeat from a different drummer had a lot to do with it.

I was a child when the Beatles came out, and something I doubt people realize, if you were not there, is how different their music sounded to our ears. Before that, music was usually either western, or Elvis Presley styles. The Beatles were a revolution. Looking back at their videos, you can see how very well groomed and respectful they were. Yet, they were considered so radical, that some parents (including mine), would not allow me to watch their performances on TV. My only contact was the radio. And of course I bought their albums.

How can anyone not smile watching these guys. They were stellar in all departments, musicianship vocally and professional showmanship. I get infuriated that people have savaged Ringo for his playing and his vocals. What did rock and roll drums even sound like before Ringo. Most often the drums were an afterthought before Ringo. Ringo had style. Ringo would have been the star in an other band. When you have three of the greatest rock vocalists in the world I guess he was just another singer. Sorry, I guess that I just had to vent. Fil,of course a wonderful analysis. You left no stone unturned. Cheers. Oh yes, also Ringo was a lefty playing right hand which I think lended greatly to the uniqueness of his drumming.

The Beatles 63 - 66 are my personal favorite of the band. There was still the collaborative songwriting, and the 2 & 3 part harmony vocals. You're right that the song running times kept one wanting to listen to them again and again. By early 67, the events began to take place that would split the Fabs up, and the I'll write my songs you write yours attitude had begun. The early music and the beautiful harmonies was something that no other players could duplicate.
@TLMuse
@TLMuse 5 жыл бұрын
Re: "the I'll write my songs you write yours attitude," it seems that might have been exaggerated. You may know that a deluxe version of the White Album came out last year, engineered by Giles Martin, who had access to newly-discovered rehearsal and demo tapes (the "Esher demos"). The White Album sessions are oft-cited as the beginning of the end of the Beatles as close collaborators. But the rehearsal and demo tapes reveal the band as still collaborating quite a bit. Giles discusses this in an interview he did for NPR's "All Songs Considered." Worth a listen (highlights are transcribed): "How The Beatles Made 'The White Album'" www.npr.org/sections/allsongs/2018/11/13/666154261/how-the-beatles-made-the-white-album

@MorbidManMusic good question. You look at how they strike the drums, is it timid or struck with authority? how fluid the hands and wrists are. Hand speed and how their control is. But maybe the most important is the left hand(for right handed). Ringo passes all these eye tests especially the left hand and that because he's actually a left handed drummer playing right handed so you'll notice he leads with the left and obviously doesn't have a weaker hand like normal right handed drummers. Your only has good as your weakest link so if your weaker hand isn't up to code than it will show.

@@kimisdaman That's incorrect. Ringo was having trouble playing a certain drum pattern that Paul wanted for the song, Back In The USSR. Ringo was so frustrated with himself and his bandmates, that he quit the band for two weeks, during the recording sessions for The White album. In Ringo's absence, Paul played the song and John and Geoge overdubbed some drum parts of their own. Nobody snuck in and rerecorded Ringo's tracks, because he never completed them in the first place. He quit playing and they kept recording songs, because they were cutting and album. Paul also played drums on Dear Prudence. Later, Ringo returned to the band after recieving a telegram from them, saying, they loved "The best drummer in the world". He was greeted by flowers that Harrison had placed on his drum kit. After Ringo returned, Paul pulled an all nighter, when he recorded Martha My Dear, on which he played the piano, in one take. Then, Paul played drums while overdubbing the rhythm section. George Martin brought in 14 session musicians to complete his orchestral score that night. The last of the four songs that the Beatles recorded without Ringo was, The Ballad of John and Yoko, which Paul and John worked on, while George was house hunting and Ringo was making a film. Paul played drums. That's it! No sneaking around and only four songs. That's how it really happened

Thanks Fil for keeping the Beatles alive for the folks much younger than me. Hearing your excellent commentary is refreshing. Keep in mind those of us at the Cavern or watching the Ed Sullivan Show at that time really had no idea what we were seeing. There was no place to put this kind of experience. Our minds had no reference or comparison like there is today. Critique was not possible. It was aceptance or rejection not knowing the reason why. I tell my up and coming students and colleagues that the "Beatles are the Mother of everything we do." Ok. I have to force myself to shut up now...... Peace and love my friends..

It’s great that you have the insight as to what the Beatles were all about. I’m lucky (and old enough) to have seen them and grow up up with them. It’s very heartwarming to listen to a young guy like you with such a great understanding of what they were all about and the musical tsunami they created through in the early 60’s. The musical advances they created back then were game changing and so were the social ones. They remain today.

Another thing with Ringo was how subtle his tricks were, listen to the song 'Please Please Me', on the "c'mon c'mon" bridge part, he crashes into it so ahead of the beat that it's almost out of synch but come the chorus the band have caught up, it's that brief divergence of tempo between them that rams the excitement home, it's so subtle, Keith Moon did it too - less subtly - but to the same effect on the chorus of 'I Can't Explain'

Not what actually happened.. They had recorded 10 tracks They were missing one tune to nail the album with a "show stopper " (as George martin wanted) they had nothing rehearsed. Someone watching the session suggested " That song "La Bamba." (meaning "Twist & Shout" they did two takes and by the third John could not talk.. it was decide that the second take was "good" so their go with that. Nest day they all realized what a powerhouse of a hit they had and of all songs of the time. "Twist & Shout because their":Show Stopper".. On the Royal Command performance it was "asked" if they could play Twist & Shout.. AND Lennon being Lennon requested "the People on the cheap seats clap.. the rest of you... Rattle your Jewelry"
