Triumph's performance of this tune at the 83 US Festival is what performance that I consider to be the best and tightest performance by any band...ever. It is absolutely mind blowing. Watch it and you will see a band at their absolute prime. I am 41 years old and don't recall EVER seeing/hearing a better live performance. What makes it even more incredible is that in 83, Triumph were still performing as a true 3 piece when playing live. It wasn't until 84 or 85 that they started using Rick Santer as a live, 2nd guitarist and occasional keyboard player. The only downside (if you want to call it that..it was still cool) of their US Festival performance of this song is that they didn't include Rik's incredible solo that he played on the studio version. What they played was still super cool... but that solo is awesome and a big part of the song. Maybe they left it out bc the song sounded too thin without the 2nd guitarist...I don't know. It isn't like Levine could play his bass and keyboard at the same time to keep it sounding full. I don't know why they omitted the solo...but I still consider it to the best greatest live performance by a rock band of all time.

I was at that show day 2 Heavy Metal Day. I'm 56 now, and as a young teen, it blew my mind, and it still does today. Triumph has always been one of my favorite bands, and that performance sealed that in stone. Stellar lineup that day. Quiet Riot opened, followed by Motley Crue, Ozzy Osbourne, Judas Priest, Triumph, Scorpions, Last was Van Halen they did 23 songs. It was my first show and the whole ordeal was a blistering mind blowing event! Woodstock for Metal Heads.

I attended that concert in Halifax, Nova Scotia back in ‘87 when I was attending Dalhousie University. The entire show was truly amazing-what I would call a “pure gem” of a rock ‘n roll show. The entire crowd was really into the performance and I think Rick and the boys were feeding off of that, and giving us an unforgettable night. Fil, I really appreciated your analysis of Lay It On The Line- what I would consider the highlight of the concert. You are spot on with your comments and your video brought back many great memories from that night.

Kent. Triumph. Was positive powerful music. A better education. Than school. So here's why. Lots almost all music is controlled by not so nice. Rich. Deceptive. People. It's used to control the masses of people also church sports etc. So an evil. Man's once said..... If we control people's. Emotions we control them also they want the money bands make but they hate positive. Music LIKE TRIUMPH. TRIUMPHS. LYRICS ARE INCREDIBLE EVERY SONG. A STORY. A LESSON. ALSO HEALING. AND DESIGNED TO BE IN HARMONY WITH UR HEART. THATS WHAT RIK AND. BAND MATES. MEANT IT TO BE SO ILL WRAP IT UP. THEY DONT WANT SPIRITUAL GROWTH HEALING. GROWING LOVING CONNECTING. MUSIC TO CLASH WITH PEOPLE. THESE ARE THE SAME MEN WHO RUN THE USA. RENEMBER CONTROL MASSES ANY MAN WHO HAS CAME OUT AND TRIED TO HEAL OR UPLIFT. HIS FELLOW HUMAN HAS BEEN KILLED OR DISCREDITED. OK. THAT IS THE TRUTH THANKS JOE

Rik had increasing frustration with the other two with music composition and practice; Rik practiced a lot more intensely and it shows along with the fact that the bulk of material came from Rik. Triumph also had problems with record company disagreements as well as band management. In the end, Rik simply said bye to the band in frustration which got quite personal with Gil. Triumph has only just recently become civil with each other; it is now too late for any real collaboration as a band again.

Geo L Did you make The US Festival? We drove 7 hours from Northern,Ca to watch the line up. We got there the night before the show. They had several very safe parking lots, and everyone was kind. No mischief, no bad apples. We saw from 25 feet from the stage Triumph take the entire show. I love listening to production music much better than live versions of the same music. Rik, and his band pulled off the best outdoor concert I have ever seen. I have been to roughly 100 plus shows in my lifetime. Most recently, I have grown to Love contemporary Christian Worship music. I am a big FFH, Casting Crowns,MercyMe guy these days. But 37 years ago my friend, me, and a very kind driver/volunteer drove us too, and then back home. Triumph lit it for over 56 minutes with 6 or 7 pieces. All done with extras, and with the encore” Fight The Good Fight”. A beautiful song, with very good lyrical work too go with. Fil is obviously enjoying this immensely, not just his usual smile. It's hard not to make a guitar face when watching this. Rik Emmett's vocals were incredible, his voice just soared! Rik Emmett and Alex Lifeson are national treasures. I was fortunate enough to see Triumph at Canada Jam, August 26, 1978 at Mosport Park, Ontario, Canada and again Feb 2, 1985 at Buffalo Memorial Auditorium (ticket was a mere $12.50). For some reason they didn't open the doors at the Buffalo Aud. until about a half hour before the scheduled 8 p.m. showtime. I remember standing outside the doors waiting to get in, freezing my ass off and getting squashed from people pushing from behind. It can be cold and miserable in Buffalo but good times! Give a thumbs up if you were there.

Looking back to Triumph's video performance live at the US Festival, I was blown away by Rik's guitar playing, especially the guitar solo played on his semi-hollow Framus Akkerman. Also loved that his choice of guitars was unique , Yamaha SPG500, Chet Atkins solid body acoustic, but apparently no sign of a Les Paul or Strat. It would be great to see a Wings Of Pegasus analysis of Rik's work from that show. Great channel and content, thanks!

Rik is a phenomenally talented musician and vocalist. He has a complete understanding of music and production skills that he has applied throughout his music career. Coincidentally I was just watching this Triumph concert video the other day and recalled how the band’s presentation and intonation was spot on. They were in their prime back then and it really shows. Thanks, Phil- you chose a good one.

I grew up in the Toronto music scene when a lot of great bands were just starting out including Triumph. I was fortunate enough to see these guys early. Yeah, Rick Santers fronted his own band "Santers" with brother Mark on drums and Rick Lazaroff on bass. Two of their albums, 1982's "Racing Time" and "Guitar Alley" from 1984 are definitely worth a listen.

Exactly again, Fil! Rik Emmett was another of the reasons I learned to play seriously back in the 80s. I saw the video for 'Fight The Good Fight'. Rick was playing rhythm with lead fills as well as singing. I adopted a lot of his technique into mine but how memorable was the day I was able to sing and play at the same time. It was like a whole new world and I was suddenly a whole new person. Naturally I never played as well as Rik and definitely never sang as well. It was amazing how Triumph (and a few other bands) could sound much larger than they actually were. (Versus other bands who have 5 to 7 players and barely sound like it.)

I remember when I first saw triumph. I was at the Simmons sports arena pool going swimming. This big guy goes swimming past with very long curly hair.. Later that evening when I went to see the band I saw that that very same person was onstage playing base. They started out with "the city" there were doing the rock and roll machine album. The guitar at the start gave me shivers it was rick playing what sounded like a double strum but it sounded almost like one note. Now im not a guitarist but love rock guitar and this actually gave me shivers it was so good.
