I remember watching both his semi-final win against Sampras and his Championship match against Moyá live at home, I was 11 years old. Corretja deserved a Grand Slam title and was just points away in the ‘99 season of taking the number 1 spot if he hadn’t got ill with mononucleosis. Great video!! 🙌🙌🙌

Two observations. First this is indoor plexicushion. They switched from carpet after 1996. The surface is a little slower and higher bouncing, like today. Also, very interesting to watch Corretja use a standard Wilson Pro Staff racquet. I think he switched to Babolat either in 2000 or 2001.

as someone still relatively new to tennis it seems to me that not having a one-handed backhand is a disadvantage here, as shown by the conclusion of the point at 8:55. no way for moyá to get that back at any real pace unless you're rafael nadal
@ehrenamtlicherehrenmann41523 жыл бұрын
He played a slice backhand. It doesnt matter if you play a one handed backhand or a two handed backhand as every player should have that shot in his arsenal. Moya also played a two handed backhand.
@keihnungm20113 жыл бұрын
@@ehrenamtlicherehrenmann4152 i think you've misunderstood what i meant - i mean with a one-handed backhand it would've been easier for moyá to get around the ball and maybe get some pace on it on the run, but corretja forced him to slice it just to get it back. seems more difficult to get leverage on a very wide ball like that with a two-hander
@masters.10003 жыл бұрын
@@keihnungm2011 A one handed backhand has better reach and maneuverability in the stretch.

@@keihnungm2011 But double-hander is better overall. The days of the single-handed backhand are all but over. The young guys are absolutely smashing those double-handed backhands (PS I speak as someone who has a particulary fine single-handed backhand - so am definitely biased in favour of the two-hander)

@zeddeka3 жыл бұрын
Corretja illustrating how Sampras could struggle with heavy topspin baseliners who could get the ball up high on his backhand. Roger Federer would have similar problems with the likes of Nadal.

No. This is the wrong camera angle to judge that line, plus the far baseline is the least well-defined (appears fuzzy) on TV. Watch the entire video and count the number of balls near the far baseline that "appear" to be out.
