The first race I ever went to was North Wilkesboro in 1986, I was 12, saw Bobby Allison walking through our hotel lobby and asked him for an autograph and he graciously signed the napkin I had in my hand. After the race the pits were opened up and Bill Elliott was sitting in the side door of his hauler signing autographs, he signed my hat, which I still have to this day. Amazing memories. Awesome! I love your point about the exponential impact of accessible drivers interacting with fans, that is so true. I was at a test session once and I gave Kyle Petty a thumbs up while he was in his car going by and he specifically acknowledged me with a peace sign. That might not sound like much but it matters a lot. Kyle Petty instantly became my favorite guy after that. Whereas my driver (younger guy at the time) didn't even look up at me when I got his autograph at a paid autograph session...I didn't think as highly of him after he basically ignored me and Kyle Petty instantly became tops in my book.

What a great interview. Never knew this gentleman before and such a kind soul, and such a wealth of great NASCAR history and stories. Loved every minute of this. One thing that really resonates was the earlier racer's attitude aspect regarding autographs; I can relate so vividly to this, one of the things that has held me as a fan to racing when I've shunned numerous other sports. Racing as a whole is still a very fan-friendly sport. But, today's NASCAR could really benefit from a "return-to-roots" movement, especially in the fan appreciation area.

I've been through Winston-Salem a number of times, usually heading to Mt. Airy to Mayberry Campground. Watching this video gives me the boost I need to stop by and visit this museum- it sure would be awesome to run into Colbert while I'm there! I ran into Richard Petty at his museum and he was as gracious with his time as is always reported- same for Don Garlits at his drag racing museum. I was standing in the gift shop waiting for my wife, who was talking to the lady behind the counter, when Don came out from the office behind the counter- turns out the lady was Pat Garlits, his first wife. He doted on my boys a bit then gave me a personally guided tour of his Swamp Rats, even stopping to talk about the '70 accident that sawed his car in half and severed the front of his foot, resulting in the development of the rear-engined Top Fuel Dragster. Those older racers are the greatest, and I sure am glad you are videoing their stories. Keep up the great work!

Love this stuff, way to go guys, thank you!!! Please see my previous comment. Concerning the hidden fuel lines in the roll bars of Junior's car, it also reminds me of the story in one of your previous videos where the #4 Morgan/McClure team was caught running an extra oil pump off the rear end with the oil lines also hidden in the roll bars........and how they finally got caught only because they cut one of those lines during a race, LOL. ON ANOTHER NOTE: Does anyone out there remember the '89 Daytona 500? We attended the race in the infield that year. Darrell Waltrip won the race solely on fuel mileage. Everyone else on the lead lap had to pit one last time near the end of the race, except Darrell in the Tide Chevy. He was literally drafting slower, lapped cars during the final few laps for fear of running out of gas. He barely made it across the finish line, because the engine was sputtering during the cool down lap. NOT ONLY DID HE WIN THE '89 DAYTONA 500, HE ALSO WON THE MILLION DOLLAR UNOCAL BONUS MONEY. A sports reporter asked Darrell: "Just how much fuel did you have left in the tank Darrell?" And Darrell smirked at the guy & said: "A million dollar's worth"...........LOL!!!

I remember it was maybe 15min long, something meant to be played on repeat in a sports or tobacco store, and it had a clip of that one wreck mark martin was in where his brakes failed and he wrecked in the infield into a fence in front of spectators. The conversations about signing autographs and the kindness of the late greats could not be better described than my encounter in Bristol I was carrying a case of Junior Johnson’s-cat daddy moonshine out of the liquor store and I heard somebody saying hey boy come over here and to my surprise, it was Junior Johnson. He saw me carrying a case of his liquor he brought me in to the front of the autograph, line that must’ve been a mile long of people waiting for his autograph, and he took pictures with me and signed every single bottle of moonshine that I bought, one of the best experiences I’ve ever had with a NASCAR great! I’ll never forget it as long as I live. A funny sidenote, there was a woman in front. That was the first person in line and she was complaining Jr Johnson told her if she didn’t like it, she could leave without an autograph, but he said it nicely lol.

I knew Ralph, and think I met Colbert a few times as well. Still have a Smokin Joe's windbreaker he got me. Ask Colbert what happened to the snot green Rolls (or the blue n white pickup)? But Ralph kept me in free cigs (3 or 4 cartons at a pop) for years back in the late 90's.

This gentleman just said the thing that Nascar will not except as wrong with Nascar. Southern people are quickly no longer identifying Nascar as a staple because Nascar doesn't want us and are disrespectful to us .

When they went too commercialized, it went to shit. Too many commercials, leading into breaks that lead into commercials. It went to shit when they had to stop the racing to add more commercials. And, changing the rules so much that any old records were basically moot. That was the end for me. Dirt track is where its at!
