We often come across people who haven't been taught how their Kia vehicle works in bad weather. From the AWD system to the Climate system, and even the lighting. I didn't know all that about the AWD system in my Seltos SX. I usually press the locking transaxle button for snow driving, but now I know I don't need to. Thanks, Peter!

Yeah! That's a common misconception! I've seen salespeople not understand how that works, so how would the buyer know? What that does is it LOCKS all 4 wheels to spin at the exact same speed. That isn't good on dry pavement and isn't what you want when you turn, as some wheels will take longer paths than other wheels. The car will actually deactivate the system on its own if you turn the wheel to full lock, or near that limit. Letting the car think for itself is almost always better, but the lock button will be an option if you are stuck in the snow, or need to make sure that ALL wheels spin at the EXACT same speed and rotation. Hopefully that helps! I think I'll do a Kia class on just the AWD system soon.

@@BrantfordKia Do you know any reason why with a kia sorento 2020 sports ex AWD, in the snow when you hit the brakes driving around 18-20mph, the brakes want allow you to push all they way down, and car continues to slide forward while it feels the brake is vibrating on your foot? car pretty new with only 4000 miles on it, new tires. Couldn't understand this if the car was just sliding in the snow or if this was another issues.

It happens on my Civic and it’s because the wheels are sliding on the ice as brakes are applied on the wheels. Not an issue.

@@dond8590 Yeah but first time it also did this in summer time no ice or water around. So seemed odd than it happen twice on the snow. Someone told me to ask about my tires as i have the sport edition and the tires may be the cause.

@@BrantfordKia This is incorrect, the vehicle uses a clutch based awd system to allow power to the rear wheels. The clutch system is a single clutch style system on the Seltos and is located just ahead of the rear differential. When its engaged it put power to the rear but its still an open differential so this system cant truly lock all 4 wheels together, rather as you say in the video it uses the brakes to transfer power around by applying the brakes to the wheel that isn't getting any traction. All that the lock button does is tell the system you want 50/50 power split rather then waiting for the system to react to the front wheels slipping. To have all 4 wheels locked you'd need to have an off-road vehicle like a Jeep Wrangler Rubicon or Chevy Colorado ZR2 which comes with front and rear locking differentials that you have to select to lock and can only be done when in 4Lo.

I have the 2022 EX. When I remote start in the winter, the car is never warm when I get if set to auto. In the summer I learned that when I leave the car set to low and high fans and remote start; its nice and frosty when I get it in. This winter, if I set the temp to hi and high fans, would it not work the same as the my AC in the summer when remote starting? Id expect to get into a warm car if its idling for 30min. I pulled 3 of these to a safe place on the side of the road so far in the snow with my 98 ram 1500 while in 2 wheel drive ( to prove a point) with an old factory installed limited slip. Kia and many of the other manufacturers should stop relying on these computer controlled systems only. A mild mechanical rear limited slip ( clutch style) with the computer controlled system as well would make these things alot safer and reliable. They get stuck on relatively flat ground often and they really fail on hills, when you need awd most. I have literally seen fwd vans go around these things on hills

I have a 2020 Kia Forte, this winter will be the first with this car and I have no idea how it’s going to handle the winter, my past vehicles have had awd and didn’t have much issues in the snow. Guess if you have good winter tires, should be ok in most conditions.

Peter, I"ve got a 2021 Stinger GT Limited AWD. Is there a way I can use the UVO to remote start and activate the seat warmers? It turns the steering wheel on but not the seats. Can I activate the heated seats and turn on the heated steering wheel with one button or action. I saw that you can do it on some Kia vehicles.

If it's a true diff lock it should also disable the traction control giving you more power and torque to all wheels. My guess is it just changes how the computer operates. We just got a 23 Sportage and it does okay in the snow but it's nothing close to our 06 Grand Cherokee.

I've had several Grand Cherokee's and they are very capable. The fuel mileage was aweful though - every vehicle has +'s and -'s.

How does it feel to drive the FWD in snow? I ordered a Seltos 2023 FWD and i am afraid that i should have gone with AWD. I live in Toronto, and always use winter tires. I have been using a ford escape se fwd before and i did not have any issues.

If you have a FWD with winter tires, you're way better then these AWD with all season tires on them. However, if equipment with AWD and winter tires then these things will out do you on snows if you ever get stuck the the AWD lock will surely get you out of the snows.

The AWD system is on demand, so you don't have to do anything. You can lock in the ratio's by pressing the Lock button, and that can be done at any speed, and while in drive!

All-Season tires are very good, but Winter tires will give you MUCH better snow traction. Keep in mind AWD only helps you get moving, it doesn't do much for helping you keep traction while steering, and it does nothing for braking performance in poor conditions. If you want the best traction, and want to get the most out of all the electronics that can keep you safe in the winter weather, than winter tires will give you the best performance.

You can always override the AUTO setting, but often the auto setting does what you need it to do.

We added winter tires on steel rims. A lot of people use steel rims here because they're less expensive than buying a second set of aluminum rims, and they pay for themselves by not having to mount and balance the tires each time you swap.

Over 45 years of winter driving for me without an accident and I never had snow tires on any of my 20+ cars and trucks, and I will never have them unless mandated. I live in northeastern Ontario where most of the roads and streets are terrible at the best of times, I drive to the road conditions, always.

That makes sense, but 45 years ago you didn't have ANY electronics that could help you. In a modern car, you're paying for those electronics, and the way to make them work the best is to give them as much traction as possible. I'm not trying to change your mind, but I think it's worth pointing out to others who may read the comments. My wife has never driven a vehicle in the winter without winter tires, and even she noticed the huge difference in modern cars vs. older cars with all of these electronic safety features.

You are dead wrong about the auto system. In cold climates, you will get MUCH faster heat by starting in manual mode, heat set to high. Climate control in these cars is awful.
