Nice vid Patrick. I'm nearly 75 now so I get most of my fun watching others and remembering wild camps many years ago all sort of centred around the A6 - up through Cromford, Matlock, Hartington, Castleton. In those early days it took two men and a donkey cart to carry your gear, a canvas two man tent and flysheet and a kapok filled sleeping bag! Things got better lol. Enjoy it as long as you can cos it only comes once! ATB Tone

+Anthony Antrobus Hi Tone I remember camping with the scouts 45 plus years ago with heavy canvas tents and heavy stoves and remember the weight of my Dads camping gear, so we are lucky we now have lightweight gear. I,am 60 now and it scares me how fast time is going so I make myself go out wild camping whenever I can, as you say it only comes once then once you stop its gone forever. Thanks for your thoughtful comments Pat

It's been lovely re-watching some of your camping videos over the past few weeks, Pat. It's sort of an evening routine for me...feet up, cup of coffee, and watch one of your vids. Absolutely fantastic. I look forward to your upcoming adventures once things return to a degree of normality inthe coming months. Very best wishes, Alistair.

Great video on the tent. I have never done a snow camp before. You did dude and filmed it . I read some.of the negative comments but you have mostly good comments. This is your channel. like myself I will either watch it or not but I watched the whole video. so I can see the tent pitched and lived in and broken down in the snow so you have helped me know what this tent is like and a glimpse of a snow camp in minus conditions. I have to really really plan for this type of camp because I have never done it before. Thank you so much for an informative video. xxx

How very fitting that we have our first snowfall here in S20 and this video pops up in my feed. I've had a Quasar since the early 90s. An absolutely bombproof shelter. I bought it for my alpine adventure back when I was able to walk all day and carry my house on my back. Its starting to show its age now though. The proofing is failing, and the bungees on the guy point are perished. I just don't have the heart to part with it. The new Quasar has changed very little by the looks of it. Mine has the old Wild Country branding and was UK made. Looks like a cracking night out Pat.

Hi Andy, yes a bomb proof tent, fe!t so secure in it, but for me it was just too heavy for one, so sold it and bought my Soulo, great tent the Soulo, but never as strong and stable as the Quasar, all the best Pat

Wiltshire Man Hi Sandy yes this was a memorable camp, couple of years ago, best snow camp I have had, hopefully your predictions come true and we get a decent fall of snow. I just discovered your channel and subscribed. That looked a great night. I have the dragonfly stove and use a little bit of meths to prime it instead of opening the valve. It works and is much safer and doesn't flare so I can cook in the porch. I keep a small bottle about 30ml in my cook kit and put it in my pocket about 10 minutes before I want to light my stove. With regards to keeping feet warm I use my old army '58 pattern water bottle and fill it with almost boiling water. Lovely toasty warm feet, though I have to wear socks to stop them burning lol. ATB Mark.

+Squatts Wild Camping Hi Mark and thanks for comments. This camp was last year and a great camp in the snow , I was hoping to be camping this year in snow but very little snow in the Peak district. Liquid fuel stoves do flare up a bit so not good in porch, I take a small gas stove for odd drink or just boil water for dehydrated meals in tent. Your meths idea sounds good like the old paraffin primus stoves. I too have discovered the benefits of hot water bottle worth the extra fuel for nice warm feet. Thanks for watching all the best with your camps Pat

Spent Xmas eve halfway up an alp in a storm in a quasar many years ago. (So long ago that there were no LED head torches). Performed perfectly. Would have been around 1994. The year before we camped on a cliff top near Land's End on NYE in a storm that must have been approaching Hurricane strength. The tent took the full force as the storm came in off the Atlantic, and just shrugged it off. Still got it and still use it. Still working well on the Vercors plateau last year. Too bulky for me for single use, but as a 2 man tent it is in my opinion unbeatable. Expensive, but has been worth the money over the 25 years I have had out of it.

Hi Matt sounds like you, ve had some great adventures and the Quasar has served you well. Agree the tent is unbeatable and probably withstand anything mother nature could throw at it. I did sell my Quasar mainly due to the weight for one man camping, bought a Hilleberg Soulo very pleased with it for space and lightweight, but does not feel as secure as the Quasar, all the best Pat

Hi Patrick, I have a Vaude Power Lizard 2 person tent, it only weights 1046 grams / 2.3 pounds. I ve had it years and used it in all 4 seasons and in high storm rains (with longer pegs) . Never leaked, ripped, mis-shaped or anything, best tent I have ever owned, most expensive too but absolutely worth it. That tent does look bomb proof and very sturdy. Mine looks flimsy because of the lightweight material but has stood the test of time.

Kaylem Hi Kaylee your tent is very light at 1046 gm great for lightweight camping and sounds like it is a good tent in severe weather. I don,t mind carrying a bit extra weight for a solid tent Asif a major part of your kit, hope it serves you well in the future Pat

Yep, I still use my £50 argos dome tent (5kg) but massive (3 or 4 peeps), easy, and pretty solid, worth the extra kg for the extra...eXtra! and if a couple of you go, just spread the weight. cheers Pat.

+Phil Hayes Hi Phil In the movie I used a Terra nova Quasar tent but due to weight I sold it and have bought the Hilleberg Soulo, it will be my winter tent but I,'ve not tried it in the snow yet. My winter bag is a Rab Ladakh about 10 years old, I have just bought a exped mattress which I still have to try in the winter. I have a liquid fuel MSR Whiperlight stove for cold conditions rather than gas and then alot of down and thermal clothing to try and keep warm. Same as everybody else I,am changing items as they improve or my old stuff becomes outdated. Thanks for your interest and let's look forward to some heavy snow this year, thanks Pat

+will brownless Hi Will I,ve camped in both tents in windy conditions and I felt more secure in the Quasar, due to its heavy weight construction, the downside in that you have to carry the extra weight The Soulo was fine but due to its lighter weight it did flap about a bit, I still have to try the Soulo in really windy conditions. Great video Patrick. I use a Super Quasar, a bit older than yours as it doesn't have colour coded poles. I'm curious about your guy line arrangement as the adjuster looks to be at the top. Is that a cam cleat? Do you have another sliding adjuster at the peg end? What pegs do you use? I'm also very impressed by your shiny MSR stove - bet it doesn't stay that way for long. Here's to getting some snow soon.
@patrickdickinson6492
@patrickdickinson6492 9 жыл бұрын
+Mark Dixon Hi Mark and thanks for your comments I did sell my Quasar tent after making this video a great and really strong tent but too heavy so bought a Hilleberg Soulo which I still have to try in the snow. The guys did use a cam cleat so the guy rope went round the peg and adjustment was just by the cam cleat . The pegs I used were MSR snow stakes which could be laid flat in the snow, I had a loop of guy rope already fastened to the snow stake and in turn I looped it around the tent guy rope to form a secure anchor. it was a bit fiddly setting each peg up. I did look at some plastic hooks I could fasten to the guy rope on the peg but was concerned how strong plastic would be so I looped guy ropes together to form strong anchor point. Like you I, am looking forward to some snow to try out my Soulo tent and some other new bits of gear, quite looking forward to winter, all the best Pat

Would be interested to know how you deal with condensation on inner wall when sleeping in really cold weather. I've had sleeping bag hood and sides wet through in the morning if touching wall! do you close up the tent to keep warmth in or open door for venting?
@patrickdickinson6492
@patrickdickinson6492 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Pete sorry for delay must of missed your comment. Tend to open ventilation up a bit but still get a bit of condensation in winter, not a lot you can do as you don,t want it too draughty, thanks for comments Pat
@peteswright
@peteswright 7 жыл бұрын
No problem Pat. Can't imagine how you manage to follow all your comments and answer them all. Yep, its a fine balance in cold weather between keeping the warmth in the tent while achieving enough ventilation to avoid condensation. I guess venting should come first to keep the tent dry and you healthy, then rely on the sleep system (sleeping bag etc) to keep warm. I always find it tempting to keep the damned cold out though, lol. ATB. Pete.
