A return to a full power cartridge, which has proven to be really too powerful for full automatic fire. This rifle would more appropriately be described as a battle rifle, like the FAL and G3 in the same 7,62x51 NATO calibre. Since it's in 7.62x51 NATO (.308) this is a battle rifle and not an assault rifle as it uses a full powered cartridge, more of a rifle with an intended use of longer ranges and the ability to take more powerful armour piercing ammunition. Unless it wants to make it's own proprietary round then it's the best option. Russian full powered ammo is long with a rimmed case so not good for automatic rifles. I'm sure India will want an assault rifle in 5.56x45 NATO but 7.62x39 (ak round) isbrmgrest for short distances of under 300m and can be made or purchased at a very cheap price. If India made it's own rifle round it would probably go with something between 6 and 7mm for an assault rifle and 7mm to 8.6mm for a battle rifle / sniper rifle / machine gun round. India can make barrels but just not mass produce good barrels or make child hammer forged and chrome lined barrels. They imported some cold hammer forging barrel machines from Austria and they make barrels fast of a very high quality, hopefully also imported food chrome lining machines. Apart from that you can make everything from standard machining like forging, CNC. Billet. Stampings, aluminium and such and India can do all of that. Maybe a problem will be in production of good optics (scopes, prisms, red dots) but also in mass producing affordable millitary grade ammunition, steel and brass case. Some cartridge and bullet machines from the west and east would be a good idea so would ramping up production of smokeless powder, priming compounds, primers. and mass produced steel core copper and bi-metsl jacket rounds. To me this rifle seems to be an AK in 7.62x51 NATO (.308), they do make AKs in this caliber. But this one seems different as in it has a similar system to the Gali Ace as in the rifle can but split in 2 for cleaning but it also makes sure you can mount modern optics without problems.. It's probably aluminium with steel reinforcement parts in the upper and lower imeith maybe some polymer. It could have a short stroke gas piston like the SKS / HK416 / CZ58 / T81 and such, this would be a better option as it would make the rifle more accurate. The AK has a long stoke system. I hope the handguards are freeflosted and the barrels are CHF and CL with an option of 30 round mags.

After 75 years, with all the composite materials and technologies, India presents something heavier than the World War Two British made Small Magazine Lee Enfield (SMLE .303"=7.62 mm)) which defended India in 1962 (with poor results enforced by the Neta Babus despite the Army's best efforts), mauled Pakistan in 1965 and gave Pakistan a bollocking in 1971. When this was replaced with the Make in India INSAS, it took away the confidence of the Army by jamming, misfiring and living uo to the Indian Government's reputation. By cutting and pasting pieces from other weapons makes 100 days a very long time for "Make in India"

But ya..500 meters is less but short barrels like this are favoured by special forces because easier to put in backpacks, para jumping etc. They should also have a longer barrel option. 7.62 x 51 rounds can easily do 700 meters with right barrel.

@@anandsuralkar2947 5.56 and 5.45 are still absolutely deadly for "domestic" operations! They are devastating rifle rounds that have proven their lethality in war; from the Vietnam war, to the Soviet war in Afghanistan and beyond. But it's modern soldiers body armour that's driving the search for better performing bullets; against the new battle plates made out of highly sophisticated materials which the lighter 5MM+ bullets fail to penetrate at normal battlefield distances. So a return to 6MM+ and 7MM+ classes of bullets with more modern propellants for deep penetration is the way to go.
