Gabriel is reference to the book. After its invention, an aggressive marketing campaign was initiated to sell them with slogans like "Protect yourself!" advertising its use to defend oneself from bandits and brigands. One can only assume that Gabriel died quite wealthy (or given Sapkowski's sense of humour, a victim of his own invention!).

I always found it weird that only Lambert gets a generic dialogue option and not a "cutscene" dialogue at Vesemir's funeral because I always had Keira there, but when I saw his reaction when Keira wasn't there a thought came to me that maybe that's not how it's supposed to be and that there might have been a plan to be able to talk to Lambert after the Battle at Kaer Morhen, and it becomes more apparent when we know we also have a dialogue option with Keira about Lambert that you only find through accidentally finding Keira still at the funeral pyre. Also I always saw the dialogue in Eremas' lab about talking about what Geralt found there with Lamber and Vesemir as "flavor" dialogue but I agree it would have been nice to have dialogue referencing that.

"Two turned in Geralt’s direction. The witcher took care of them in a blink of an eye. A third shot at him with a Gabriel. A miniature crossbow invented and built by Gabriel, a craftsman in Verden. He pioneered the slogan, ‘Protect yourself from banditry and violence’, said the advertisement. ‘The law is helpless and powerless. Protect yourself! Do not leave home without a handy Gabriel brand crossbow. Gabriel is your guardian angel, Gabriel will protect you and your loved ones from bandits,’ The demand had surpassed all expectations and the sale had achieved a true record. Soon all bandits wore a Gabriel when assaulting someone. Geralt was a witcher and was able to dodge the arrow." Witcher, Tower of the Swallow It's the little things like that though that truly show how intrinsicaly the games are so seamlessly woven into the book witcher world :).

According to the Witcher Wiki: Gabriel was a craftsman from Verden who had the distinction of being the inventor of miniature crossbows, possibly wrist-mounted. Gabriels were named after the inventor and marketed as ideal for personal defense from bandits. They became very popular. Naturally also with the bandits.

0:53 in the books (can't remember which one...) they talk about a smaller crossbow made for self protection called the Gabriel crossbow... probably what Lambert is referencing

Go to midcopse armorer in Velen. He says ‘u aint safe unless u got a Gabrielle. The auto-cranked, one-handed Gabrielle ensures you’ll get the first shot - and the last word!’

It's a book reference I think where some guy was selling crossbows against bandits but the largest costumers were bandits.
