Yes, he really plays that 5-neck. Just saw them live in September and even at 70+ years old Rick strapped that thing on and played it. You can see it much better in the official video for their song She’s Tight. And yes, Robin Zander is an incredible singer and he still is at age 69, too. He still hits the high notes on this song live. He killed it on everything when I just saw them. VERY underrated rock vocalist.

I've seen Cheap Trick at least 6 times. They don't miss a beat, play a super long set, and most importantly, they still jam just like they used to. They perform as if the stage is their home. I don't know many other bands with their longevity and the high number of their fans young and old.

This song is set apart from all the rest of their stuff and came so much later. I lost my best friend/ex fiance to suicide and it just ripped a hole right through me. And just when I thought I was doing better, they played this on VH1 and I lost my mind all over again because every word just. In the early 90's, when this song was getting a lot of airplay, I and my co-worker were sitting in my office at work. I was playing the radio and this song was playing. A teen girl that also worked in the building, ran into my office and said "I love this song, sooo much. Who's the group?" When I replied "Cheap Trick" she said "I'm going to buy all of their records" and ran out of the office. When she was gone, my co-worker asked "Don't you think that's unreasonable?" I answered "Not at all."

For the most part, I’d agree. But there are a few exceptions. Hello There, Clock Strikes Ten & Come On Come On are definitely better off In Color, than from At Budokan, while I Want You to Want Me, their signature song, is miles better than the studio version. The other songs from Budokan are about as good as the original studio versions. I haven’t spent much time deciding which songs from the expanded versions off the Complete Budokan set are better live or studio. But those early studio albums from the beginning through at least Dream Police are phenomenal!

This song is a tender ballad where the singer tells a girl he will always be there for her. It was not typical of Cheap Trick's sound, and was also their only hit not written or co-written by their guitarist Rick Nielsen. The song succeeded in exposing the band to a much larger audience. This was Cheap Trick's only #1 hit, remaining at the top spot in the US for two weeks in the summer of 1988. In this song, the flame represents the singer's love, which will always burn bright. Those following Cheap Trick's career spotted this song as an outlier, since they eschew metaphor in their songwriting. Note the difference between this song and their previous hit: After the fire After all the rain I will be the flame I want you to want me I need you to need me
@Johnny_Socko2 жыл бұрын
Supposedly Robin Zander hated this song when it was first brought to them, and he recorded it under protest, lol. He thought it didn't reflect the spirit of the band, and that it wouldn't go anywhere. And then it went to #1.

Each neck is set to a different tuning, allowing the guitarist to cover a broader audio spectrum with only one instrument instead of switching out guitars as needed. In this video you can see some of them in the background. Besides all this, he is a GREAT guitarist. Bun E. Carlos is a great drummer into the old school drums. When other drummers of the day had massive drum kits, he kept it very simple. Always wearing a shirt and tie...ALWAYS smoking. FUN FACT: If you look closely, bassist Tom Petersson is playing a TWELVE string bass! Made by Hamer Guitars...he is one of only TWO bassist I know that use it...the other is Dug Pinnick of King's X.

He didn't have a sax on his guitar, the guitar was shaped like a sax. Rick Nielsen owns hundreds of guitars and has designed some of the crazy looking ones. He does play all five necks during his guitar solo. There is a video of their song Surrender, I forget if you've done that one, where he plays four out of the five. One is a twelve string and one is fretless and one sounds like a Fender and another sounds like a Gibson. I guess the last sounds like a Hammer which is what the whole guitar is made by.

They have such a diverse catalogue of music that it truly is a rabbit hole you could dive down and truly get lost. AND JAY YES he (Rick Nielson - their lead guitarist)plays all 5 parts of the guitar you saw.. I have seen it many times .. BUT the guitar is so heavy he only plays it once a show! Deep catalogue here. So glad you are featuring my home state, Illinois, bands tonight. I did see CT twice in the early 80s. The first time was in 1980 on the Dream Police tour with The Romantics opening. Robin Zander is a great lead singer.

One of my favorite bands to see live. Saw them many times. Come On Come On from the live Budokan album has always been my favorite. The five neck guitar is super heavy. Rick usually only plays it for one song each show.

Rick Nielson, the lead guitar player, had a huge collection, and constantly changed during concerts. I saw them 3 times in the 1980's, and they are still one of my favorite bands. Please check out "Surrender"

Oh man do I have some great memories of when this song came out. I do remember that this was their only #1 hit. I loved them all though

This is my all time favorite Cheap Trick song💜 From my understanding they almost passed up doing this song and I'm so thankful they decided to do it. Robin's voice and the lyrics are so beautiful 💜

I don't see too many requests for *gonna raise hell* great beat and vibe from their 1979 record, plus amazing vocal feats by singer Robin

Even if you don't read to Heaven Tonight, you owe it to yourself to listen to it. Even the band members say it is the best song Rick wrote.

Probably Robin Zander's most dynamic and powerful vocal performance since "Mandocello." One thing about bands formed in the 1970's is that their albums had rockers and ballads.

Love you guys, love this channel. Cheap Trick was my 1st concert 40+ years ago. It’s so nice to see the music I grew up with appreciated. 😁

Cheap Trick has an awesome catalog of songs! "I Want You to Want Me", "Surrender", "Dream Police", "She's Tight", "Don't Be Cruel (Elvis cover), and so many more. Yes, all five necks are live on his guitar, and they each have a distinct sound (tuning, string gauge, fret scale, ETC) but even by Rick Neilson's own account, he does stay more to the middle...but he does use all five necks.
