This reminds me of a neighbor I had who thought he'd have a better watch dog by treating his dog mean, "to make him tough" in his warped opinion. I tried explaining that a dog who loves you will gladly lay down his life to defend you.. of course guys like him never listen.. At least the wife was very loving and kind to that dog. They were both abused by that pos for years. We had to call the police many times, they even had swat once during a hostage situation when he had her tied up, apparently for days, torturing her.. She spent two months in the hospital and came out on crutches, but went right back to him, afraid he'd kill her mother if she left, anyways it was a sad mess. That's how it was for almost five years when she came pounding on the door one night, asking for help, which she only did when it was life or death so I called the cops and got my gun, then followed her to the house. I'll never forget the sight when I got there.. the man was sprawled across the bed, covered in blood and the dog was calmly eating his armpit, way deep in there.. The guy had apparently had a seizure after six days straight of shooting crack and who knows what.. she said the dog just dragged him up on the bed, the only time he even growled was when we tried to pull the guy away. We couldn't get him away! He was calmly eating him alive for almost 20 minutes.. After all those years of abuse from that sick bastard, I wasn't surprised, but it was still an awful sight.. So, the cops came up the hallway behind us, one shot the dog, and the dog charged. The wife slammed the bedroom door just in time to keep the dog off of us.. they shot him two more times, and that dog still walked out of there on one of those stick leashes with animal control. I can't imagine the amount of suffering that poor dog went through, all so some coward could feel like he had a mean dog to protect his sorry ass. He probably owed alot of people money, idk. In the end it didn't matter how many times he "established dominance" the dog defended his only friend, the one he loved that was his only glimmer of kindness in an abyss of pain and cruelty. The guy lost his right arm at the shoulder, he never got a prosthetic. A few years later the wife became pregnant, then finally realized even that wouldn't change him, so she left with a man who was 20 yrs older and very wealthy. She had a little girl who is in elementary school now... As for the father/husband, they found him in an abandoned house dead from sepsis last November. That's what happens when you shoot drugs in your neck, forehead, and pelvis.. Anyways, my point is this, people will WANT to look out for you when you're good to them. Act like a tyrant and they'll get you the moment you're vulnerable. The same goes for dogs.. you get what you give, so be nice to your dog and your people. The one thing people never forget about you is how you made them feel..
