It isn't really that this isn't really new. After all the Pacino Scarface was a ethnically swapped remake, for example. It's that the people doing it don't know how to be entertaining, and worse it's not even their primary goal.
@Soupy_loopy

Yeah, but they don't even respect or enjoy the source material either. Why remake something that you despise? It's too hard to come up with something new with so many rules to follow and obligations to fulfill. But I can't feel sorry for writers when they prioritize messaging over entertaining. They remake these movies to target a certain audience and then proceed to insult that audience. But somehow, they act surprised by all the negative reviews. They're not afraid to insult anyone, but they only come to insult certain people based on sex, race, and religion. It just happens that the people they insult are in the majority, while they search for acceptance from minorities. Unfortunately for them, minorities don't like bad movies either.

@brianmurphy6480 Yes, it seems the customers are the ones with the REAL money. Used to be these customers go to the movies to be entertained; The cultural event was just a natural side effect if the movie was well received. Now we can be entertained in every way by a common device, so we go to the movies hoping less for that entertainment, and more for that cultural strength. Hollywood's given us the opposite; Why we're not doing good enough, why we should be divided, why we should feel guilt, why we should be doing better, why this demographic is better than that demographic, why your ancestors accomplishments are failures, why your culture is evil, why this society isn't worth saving, etc., etc. Like Network News, Hollywood knew the new social tech was surpassing them, and they went for the bottom of the barrel to survive: The "consumers" instead of their Customers, deliberately leaving their customers behind in the dirt. The dying serpent strikes deepest, and videos like this one are more welcome proof that it will happen one day, that the serpent will eventually die.

To Jerry's point, it's gotten so bad that some writers wont even touch comedy. We have a 30 year old black guy in our screenwriting class that just said two weeks ago that he wants to write a comedy. He has a script in mind, but he's scared to even write it because he doesn't want to offend anyone. Let that sink in. DEI activism obliterates creativity.

If your attitude in a class before you've even started is worrying about how a tiny minority of group thinking people feel, you've already lost the battle. We must never forget they truly are a tiny portion of every industry except maybe academia. It's people around them being so afraid of backlash that have made this small group so damn powerful. Never thought I'd see the day. Where I come from, we still call a spade a spade if someone's acting like one and damn what they think. The sky won't fall in.

It's also a problem with character writing in general. Every "diverse" character you write is scrutinized for "harmful stereotypes," which generally amounts to any negative trait, period. The consequence of this is that every "diverse" character has nothing about that that's really wrong (and thus can be worked on) and ends up empty, unjudgeable, bland, and ultimately boring, while the flawed white characters with potential to grow are much more interesting. (And there are still allegations of racism that arise from this, as your perfect "diverse" character giving guidance to a troubled white character becomes a "magical negro." You cannot win by playing these woke games.)

When you blame your CUSTOMERS for NOT wanting your product because THEY are stupid, not politically aligned correctly or some other immutable horse sh1t, it is NOT the customers who are at fault. There is a reason why companies or industries go away. Typically the products the customers once bought, they quit buying. And in this case, it is primarily because the 'sellers' as a large group decided to create a product or group of products that appalled to just a small percentage of the population. And not ONLY did they sell it that way even after we quit buying, they continue to tell us that WE are the problem for the lack of sales. Yeah and monkeys might fly outta my....

As an oldie myself I don't get the line of thought in US entertainment and some other corporates. Here in Australia only the largest corporates try to virtue signal but we don't tend to go in for that stuff and are pretty loud in rejecting it. But our entertainment industry can't compete with the US so most of our content comes from there. I know entertainment has always skewed left but as a devotee of old HW film I often look up actors whose politics are listed (something we don't do) and it was almost 50/50 in terms of who they supported. An industry willingly drifting so far one way, claiming to be diverse whilst only allowing a single narrow viewpoint is an anathema to creativity, therefore profit.

Yup. Exactly! Entertainment is everywhere now, and their delivery-devices: commonplace. It seems like everyone in the theatre medium (patriots and progressives alike) are zeroed-in for a slot of "cultural relevance" more than trying to be just "personally entertained." When we didn't have smart phones, the phenomenon was an effect of the crowd liking something. Now, like you said, industry idiots are trying to ape that without strengthening the society they hate by making their horrible woke ideas the cause for the cultural phenomenon. The entertainment was what it was suppose to substitute and the theatre was their battlefield for this agenda to operate in. They adapted the wrong way merely because their ideas are that of a spoiled, entitled, sheltered, overly-privileged, narcissistic psuedo-intellect, and not that of anything normal people living a real life can relate to.

They don't. Very disconnected from the real audience. They "THINK" they know the audience, because the distributors said so and the international sales agents said so. And the talent agencies say so. In conclusion, unions are useless, can't do a thing, but sue anyone to get residuals. Distributors and sales agents keep stealing money. Talent agencies keep asking for more publishing money, and the studios keep spending on ad agencies. That's the reason why they can no longer make a hit. They are STUCK!!! The youngest generation enters the field, learns from the bad, and they confused too. So very stuck! Psychopath and then Sociopath - it's called the current Hollywood creative. Due to "STUCK". The Taiwanese people are lining up in droves to see movies at all hours of the day. Apparently, Asian filmmakers are still making movies that capture their audiences' attention. It's a sharp contrast to the dreary desolate movie theater in my hometown back in America. So movies are not necessarily dead in other countries around the world. Just in America.

At least the likes of Netflix has recognised some of what viewers want. Having triple world subs as US/Canada combined it's buying up or paying to produce more localised content we can all access. As a non American and part of the world that never had the entertainment finances to compete much, we were generally stuck with mostly US stuff whilst HW bragged the world lapped up its content when it was more lack of choice. Now internal politics have spilled over to the point of even pissing off Americans (other westerners mattered least) it's welcoming some US companies recognise non US content can widely appeal. Though I don't get Netflix capitulation to HW in light of its power.

It went into the making of all the sets, puppets all the technical magic that happened behind the scenes to make the movie. So last night she begs me to watch the movie with her and then starts rattling off all the details from the stories about how they made the film. Point is, there’s still a hunger for old school film making magic among younger people. Personally, the second I see excessive CGI in a trailer I’m out. Just a scroll over some landscape to an egg that cracks for green light to spill out...then a few tiny bits of scene and nothing at all revealed of the monsters or what is going on. Other than corridors, spaceship and planet...and by this point its got to a pounding heartbeat tempo and chilling shriek sound effect added in....its unsettling, scary, gives the feeling something hideous is going on and the humans seem out of their depth and terrified....its one of the best trailers ever made for a film. Then, the actresses and studio heads are lecturing the audience before, during, and after the show/movie comes out. What is appealing about any of this??

Try watching some old documentaries (Horizon is a good example) made by the BBC, ITV and even Channel 4. They're so much better than the infantile garbage that's made today and has been the standard for the last two decades at least. The decline started during the 90s with BBC Director General John Birt playing a major role because he wanted to dumb everything down in a patronising and elitist belief that what the Beeb was putting out was far too highbrow for us little people. I'd say the last really good BBC documentaries came out at the tail end of the 90s "The Planets" documentary miniseries from 1999 (not the later Brian Cox version) is a great example of how good these programmes used to be.

I don't exactly like Tom Cruise the person, but since he is willing to do movies that don't try to sell his ideas of how we should live or be crammed full any of that DEI stuff - his ideas would presumably be that cult stuff - I am still willing to pay for his movies. Makes sense, I guess, the leaders of his cult seem to be quite well aware of how to make money, and presumably that is their whole aim (that is how the whole thing started, anyway, L. Ron Hubbard was reputedly quite open about it when talking with some other science fiction writers back in the day), so in his case, and to keep their star member making money, I presume Cruise may have been told to keep making movies that stay with those basics, and mostly only those basics. And Cruise probably has the clout to dictate what he is willing to make to the studios. Kind of weird, but this may be one case where his cult is actually doing some good. Kind of inadvertently, just because they like money, but what the h**l, I'll take that.

The strike helped destroy my business that’s for sure! 70% of my clients went broke overnight. What they don’t talk about in regards to this “contraction” is that streaming artificially created a sort of Hollywood writer “middle class.” There was so much garbage content produced that every UCLA and USC grad or trans activist got a job “writing” on a “show” no one ever saw. These were low paying gigs but made people feel like they had “made it” and greatly inflated the amount of people actually in the union. In the old days with only three networks or even during the cable boom there were a very limited number of actual shows and the studios had the luxury of hiring the best of the best.

I don’t know about the rest of you… But it’s just more cost effective for me to stream something at home instead of going to the theater. I live in rural middle America and the closest movie theater is, after checking… 45 minutes away from my house. I will take me a half a tank of gas, in a vehicle that gets 25-30 mpg, to go there and back again. Considering current gas prices, that’s approximately $15-20, in addition to the cost of tickets and any snacks/drinks I want to buy while there. Why would I pay that… when I can simply stream something from home for a fraction of that cost? Plus I can enjoy what I want while watching. Plus all of their ideological infested stuff will be online later anyways, so it just requires patience… which I’m getting more and more of as I get older.

Part of the problems with the movie industry are: (1) Wokeness being preached in movies (see: Disney). The audience wants to go to be entertained, not to be lectured. (2) Remakes of classic films or films more than 20 years old, and re-done with poor quality writing and performances...especially the wokeness in said scripts. (3) Sequels. Too many sequels. No one wants to see the newer Ghostbusters or Planet of the Apes series, because it's all been done. (4) Super hero movies. Too many of them, and despite what the "experts" are saying, people ARE "burning out". And again - poor quality scripts and performances. Basically, it comes down to poor quality, and a complete lack of understanding of the customer base. FYI...I've been working in the movie industry since 2001, and I have seen the decline in process.
