To answer the closing question: The Silent King is on a completely different scale than Guilliman. People tend to forget that in the current setting, “a galaxy at war” refers more to multiple, smaller wars happening simultaneously, at a multi-sector scale at their very largest. The War in Heaven by contrast, was a single war spanning the entire galaxy. At the most basic level, Szarekh, and every Necron noble too, has 5,000,000 years worth of experience from that time, where things like the Celestial Orrery weren’t even considered proper weaponry. (He can be said to have won that war by the way.) Guilliman has, with the most generous estimates, 500 years under his belt and only 9 of those were spent fighting in the Horus Heresy. If it wasn’t for meta reasons, a clash between the two would be catastrophic for the Primarch. Szarekh shattered an entire C’tan on his own with the very technology its kind gave him when the Emperor himself, wielding psychic powers, only managed to hold back a shard long enough to re-imprison it. Roboute is it an infant compared to Szarekh.

Much though I've enjoyed seeing Guilliman and the traitor Primarchs flexing their might across the galaxy again (especially with how much better humanized they've become in recent years) I don't think there's a chance in hell Guilliman or any of the Living Primarchs would stand a chance against Szarekh, either strategically or in especially one-on-one combat. The scheming and treachery of the Pharons could prove to be enough of an Achilles heel to make them on par in terms of effectiveness as a commander of battle zones, but the only beings who could stand face to face with Szarekh in combat and live would be perhaps the Emperor or the greatest champions of Chaos while empowered by their Gods-- and even then, I'd bet on needing 2-3 of the Gods involved at least to be a winning fight. He is simply far too old, experienced, and well-equiped with weapons from the War in Heaven for any mortal in the galaxy today to be his match. It's fortunate for all non-Chaos and Tyranid factions that he sees the other lesser races as more nuisance or even temporary allies in cases than as real threats, as this keeps his focus away from shattering already-fragile systems of power. He may not be in his heyday anymore with the command codes, but all the rest of his power and dominance as the leader of the faction who killed more Gods than any other remains as it was. Would NOT wanna see him show up in any mainline Imperial novels soon, mostly because I fear that would be a deathknell for a Primarch or major story character I love.

A mere Chapter Master is 1-1 against the Stormlord. Not sure the power scaling supports your thesis
@theroadstopshere2 жыл бұрын
@@Dadecorban while I get your point, I think there's a big difference between tabletop and chapter lore book power scaling and the in-lore wider setting power scale. 40K has never exactly been consistent about the relative strengths of characters and factions, but I think that with Necrons on the rise in the setting today, you'd be hard-pressed to see a lore book in which Szarekh would be overmatched by a Primarch, or Imotekh by a chapter master (aside from perhaps Blackmane, Calgar, or one of the other legendary named characters, who are themselves in-lore nearly demi-Primarchs in power) Definitely don't think the scaling is perfect or not in need of some retcons, and I'd be fine with being proven wrong in future, I just don't think it'd make sense in the setting today for Szarekh to be anything less than near-invincible. Especially with other loyal Primarchs returning in the near future, he needs to be overwhelmingly powerful in order to be perceived as a threat to an Imperium with multiple demigods at the helm.

@@theroadstopshere Except no one was confused that we were talking about the fluff, not the crunch. Also Helbrecht did fight the Stormlord twice and is 1-1, which was the point; there is a fluff example of an Astartes matching perhaps the second most powerful Necron (in physical combat perhaps). The point of that being that if an Astartes can win in single combat against the second most powerful Necron, it's at least plausible that both a Primarch and a the Silent King are competitive. I'm not speculating on how things that haven't happened yet will change things that have already happened (the power scaling), I'm going to refer to things that have happened. One is reasonable as far as these sorts of conversations go and the other is sub-prime mortgage speculation.
@theroadstopshere2 жыл бұрын
@@Dadecorban Right, no, totally agree on the general idea-- wasn't 100% whether you meant crunch, Helbrecht, or both, but I definitely don't think that it's unreasonable for Guilliman or another loyalist to at least duke it out with Szarekh and survive, just that them winning really wouldn't make sense narratively, nor with how much the Silent King has done in his time even when compared to the Stormlord. Big fan of Imotekh, but I've felt for a long while that his ability to match Szarekh has far more to do with how much longer he's been active in the recent setting and the alliances and subjugations he's forced than it does actual capabilities. Just speculation based on the way each has been used in the lore, but even just in terms of their respective necron bodies, Szarekh's is on another level compared to even most of the mightiest Pharons. He may not be as far above them as the Emperor was to the Primarchs, but especially with his currently known war gear and the shard of the Void Dragon he keeps around, I just can't see him as being a winnable fight for even an empowered Primarch. Survivable, maybe, but winnable? It'd definitely feel like some plot armor nonsense and would seriously hurt the believability of the necron threat. Again, just my view on the more recent lore, would not be terribly surprised (but would be disappointed) if he was used as a final boss in another new trilogy. And like I said, Helbrecht and other chapter masters or named legendary characters like him are exceptions to the way I think the chapter master of an 'average' chapter would fare against Imotekh, both for reasons of skill and war gear and for plot armor reasons. A lot of the story-important chapter masters right now have fluff achievements and power unmatched by any since the days of the legions. Which, you know, makes sense given the continuous power scaling since 40K started, even if it is kinda silly when supposedly gear and knowledge have been deteriorating for 10000 years, but somehow this current generation has all the heroes and legends, who I don't think are comparable to the ordinary Astartes chapter masters and captains. Obviously this is all just casual discussion and speculation by us as fans, so I'm absolutely not gonna try and say that you should feel the same as me or that my perspective is somehow more 'canonical'.

Sure his power and prestige can basically force any Lord or Phaeron into submission wherever he happens to be, but if his subordinates are doing whatever they want behind his back that might cause some issues. I think that the root of his problem with his servants has to do with the fact that he is not using the Command Protocols and is fairly inexperienced with maintaining a galactic war while his people have their own will. I mean, almost no one alive at this point has any experience with actual galaxy-wide warfare other than Szarekh. Even Guilliman only fought at that scale for a short time, and didn't have the scope of authority that Szarekh does, but Szarekh didn't have to compensate for his own people's fractious nature during the War in Heaven.

If the Necrons have codes, at all, if their existence is technologically controlled, the Mechanicus has an answer . . . it might be a Heretek answer, or an answer from the war against the Men of Iron, but there is an answer. And if not the Mechanicus, then it'll come from the Big E. He lived through mankind's age of the Machines.

Belisarius Cawl himself had extreme difficulty controlling a small swarm of scarabs. BASIC. SCARABS. He’s not ever going to touch what the average cryptek does on a daily.

Men of Iron are like kids toy compared to Necron tech.

I wonder why it was so silent from the Wolf Rho Lord channel. I went in and now I saw that I was not a sub to channel anymore. To me that was weird.. Anyway not I am a sub again.

The Necrons of old would curb stomp DAOT humanity and the Imperium as well as the Eldar Empire like nothing. Remember the Celestial Orrery was deemed safe to keep and the rest where too deadly. Small shattered fragments of C'tan are beyond the Emperor to kill at his height. Love the Imperium but in reality the Necrons are just above humanity. They are just not interested in killing them all.
