Being the Emperor’s executioner was certainly in Russ’ genetic makeup. Overdeveloped senses for tracking and hunting aside, he was also one of the very best fighters among the primarchs. Personality-wise, he clearly did not relish his role. Both instances (that we know of) when he was committed to slaying his brothers, he tried contacting Magnus to get him to surrender and hesitated from delivering the killing blow when he saw Horus’ true self. People can call Russ a hypocrite all they want. I see a king who learns from his mistakes and manages to forge a new path for himself and his Legion. Despite regrets, he remained loyal.

Wasn't there some character development for Russ immediately following the burning of Prospero? I wonder exactly what that changed if these aspects of his personality have been static from the beginning... As for prospero itself, I need to check that book again. I thought Magnus was willing to surrender, but Leman followed Horus's orders to kill magnus and his legion, thinking it to be the emperor's orders. Did he trust Horus's loyalties even after knowing the primarch?

Whether or not they ever accepted the Imperial Truth was irrelevant. He might be a god, drunkenly denying that which he contradicted with his mere presence, but it would change nothing to them if he wasn't. Unlike Lorgar and the people of Colchis, the Fenrisians never believed in taking their gods too seriously.

i was recently thinking about the big duel a lot, ofc Horus was buffed by chaos and simply OP as fuck but still Russ was able to defeat him (for a second), not by inherited strenght or by some technological advance,- he looked into him self, he made him self better fighter by fighting his own demons, it wasnt like Dragon ball - even though he had trained like Goku with Dreadnought, but he needed to know him self in order to know his brother, and the most important moment of it all - the "hesitation" - it want like that at all, if he killed Horrus in that moment, he would be cold murderer, no better than his enemy, he saw his brother again and wanted to help him- so we can say Russ isnt furious beast that knows only killing (wich he had done enough on Horuses ship), he is deep, emotional being with great wisdom, he has shown us his humanity and then Horus like a bitch suckerpunched him with bladed fist like the scared sack of shit he is, imagine being over 9000 and nearly getting killed by someone you laugh about

I don't know why this is not talked about much, but, The Emperor made each Primarch for a specific task; and as we found out, the Helix was intentionally put into Russ's DNA. I know it is Wolf DNA, but a Canis is a Canis. He is as loyal as a Dog would be. I do not call him a Dog as an insult, but as a compliment. We, as Humans, do not deserve Dogs. The are truly amazing creatures. Russ is his Master's Dog. Loyal no matter the odds, no matter the danger, no matter the cost. Life or limb, a Dog will do its Master's bidding and protect Him/Her to the bitter end. Russ is exactly as he was made to be. IMHO, of course. YMMV. :)

Well in my head canon, I believe that the Emperor in some way knew that his son's would be scattered. The thing is, yes I believe you're right in how Leman Russ was made specifically for that task as Executioner, therefore the Emperor probably crafted him to be perfect for that job. Now I don't know if he knew that his Son would be raised by a Wolf in the Wilderness, kinda matching up with his Executioner, or Attack-Dog, role he was to take part in.
@saltedllama27594 жыл бұрын
Every Primarch had a specific role to play. Sure, they were all great at just about everything, but each was above the others at specific tasks. Guilliman built systems. Dorn defended. Perturabo knocked down fortresses. Ferrus was calculated judgment and an efficient smith. Vulkan crafted masterpieces and cared for the weak, etc. Russ was tasked with being the executioner. Not in all situations, but if it was his charge to take someone out, he could do it. He even had an ascended Horus beat before holding back and feeling bad for his brother (which Horus obviously exploited).

Russ actually showed quite a level of subtlety here for one so seemingly savage. I have no doubts that he can sense the atmosphere between them and I believe he used this to get under his skin before challenging him in the end. It was a stare-down between two polar opposite alpha males.
@tacitus56654 жыл бұрын
Russ, definitely one of my personal favourite Primarchs, one of the best generally I'd say. Always probing always wearing a mask of stupidity or savagery over a supreme intellect, but not really pretending either, nor hiding this half pretence entirely, one could almost match his facceted character with the likes of the Lion or Alpharius. Russ is savage, but he's not, extremely cunning, but hides it, though his cunning cannot be missed either, exactly knowing when and how to use a weakness how to find or provoke it always probingo, as we see him do it with Horus, perfectly imo, though he can probably do better as well, throwing Horus the bait of a blunt probe for him to judge Horuses response to it. People always think, that his Title is missplaced or that Russ is too arrogant, but I don't agree with either. He's extremely effective and efficient, he was designed to do exactly what he does, to fight and win against the impossible, at every turn, by whatever means, he was bread to win, that also means adapting, learning if necessary, to be and do exactly what's required. I think that people dmenounce his capabilities on grounds of lost fights is wrong, if you fight what Russ does, losing is part of the process, of learning and adapting which hopefully will secure you victory.
@FoxHound-ut1hu2 жыл бұрын
'I want you to think, my lord,' said Valdor. 'Who says I don't?' said Russ. He leaned down so that he was eye to eye with Valdor, and bared his pointed teeth in a feral grin. 'I'm a thinker, me. You could say it was a meeting of two great wolves Honestly I think Horus’s tone and Attitude was less about arrogance and more trying to come to grips with having a brother. Considering the 30 years he spent as the only son spending lost of together with the emperor it’s understandable that Horus might be a bit jealous or defensive knowing that Big Daddy won’t be placing the same amount of attention spending as much time with his as before. But he is at least making the effort.

Ive just finished HH book 54 and i am absolutely convinced the emperor knew all along that the heresy would happen. Emps knew immediately that typhon was tainted and i bet he knew of erebus and all the others. And i have a somewhat crazy fheory about that: What if emps knew he could not win as he was when he was alive? What if he knew the chaos Gods were too powerful for him and he had to somehow boost his powers? What if he let the lecticio devinitatus or whatever its called to spread so he could be woreshipped over the span of 10 millenia until he acutally reached godhood to destroy them? I know it sounds crazy but think about it. Chaos likes to misdirect and lie but often times they tell the truth only not the whole truth. Maybe Horus was right and emps wanted to become a god but not for selfish reasons but to save humanity. What do younguys think? Sorry for my bad english its not my first language.

I think he always intended the great crusade to end like it did. Primarchs turning on each other, against their father. It just happen before he was ready for it. @BM-is5ei5 жыл бұрын
@@TRAVISHOWRYMUSIC thats where it gets a bit contradictory. i understand where you're coming from. esspecially since he got rid of the thunder warriors after the unification wars. but also there are a lot of hints in the earlier HH books that he very well might have intented them to become something like politicians and great leaders. the first thing that comes to mind is the description of the imperial palace where there are 20 "living areas" made esspecially for the bulk of primarchs from where, i would guess, they'd lead the imperium. and dont forget Magnus had been essential for his plans since he was supposed to sit on the golden throne. without him his original plans would have never worked.

That amuses me, because Horus is putting on as much of a show as Leman is, thinking Leman a savage, and that Leman should show him "more respect." Respect is earned. Leman's suggestion of a fight suggests to me that he was proposing a means to learn the most about Horus in the least time, including how much he SHOULD respect him. He probably learned a bit just talking about fighting with Horus. We know Horus used and manipulated the Mournival to mask the way he liked to make unilateral decisions. I think here his confidence was masking arrogance: "How could some savage think he could defeat HORUS?" Its sad to realize that his arrogance was used against him by Chaos, along with his desire for a CLOSER (the spent time together, but it seems like the Emperor kept a distance between himself and Horus, as he did with all his sons) relationship with his father...

Ohhh, you think you pull off the Wolf pelt aesthetic? But you merely adopted the look.... I was _born_ to it. _Swaddled_ in it. I didn't wear cloth until I was already a king, and by then it was nothing to me but bindings! -Leman Russ...inexplicable random thought upon first meeting his brother Horus Lupercal, and observing the latter's wardrobe accessorizing habits. Probably not, tho.

wait what? Russ feelt bad for the purging of prospero damn my thousands sons heart is conflicted with this news

I mean... I don't like Horus, but in this moment, Horus having fought with modern weapons and utilizing his armor for decades he would 100% beat Leman Russ. He's right to be confident. But Leman Russ may very well catch up ;)

Well at least he did not try to "hug" Horus's leg

Considering that the emperor added some animal genetics to some of the primarchs. Russ obviously taking after the canine wolf genetic and traits associated such as unwavering loyalty and ferocity. Likewise The lion being more solitary but also immensely powerful.

I have a theory! Also spoilers! In the part of the Wolfsbane where Russ went to the Underverse, and meets a wolf king, in the end Russ said that this wolf king is Him! Was that a insight to the future, now that we know what Corax have become?))
@jeffmusyoka18765 жыл бұрын
wait! Leman of the Russ said the Emperor is called the Allfather by his people. Isn't that the title for Odin?

I kinda wish I could see some exchanges that make Horus actually seem good. He's supposed to be so charismatic, and most are supposed to like him because of this. Guy always comes across as holier-than-thou superior. Hard to figure all the other traitors throwing in with him when he typically feels mostly above them. Write the guy with some likablity if I am to believe he is likable.
@steveforrest18854 жыл бұрын
Did Horus believe he would win? Or was it mock confidence.

so do you think that the russ knew that he would someday be fighting against horus truly ? as if he recognized that it was part of his weird to eventually really fight this man that a god had just told him was his brother?

Of course Russ wanted to fight Horus. He was undefeated until the Emperor humbled him. Now he wishes to know his measure against a true equal. So does Horus, but their father forbade it, and to Horus that was the end of the matter.

What if Leman had a kid named "Seman Russ"? Lionel el Johnson decides to troll Leman by spoiling the child with a great feast and offering some "training"? When your hated brother becomes an uncle that you don't want your kid to be influenced by?
@stevensanders66963 жыл бұрын
Leman and Lion don't hate one another. They got into a squabble over a misunderstanding, but Lion always respected Russ, even if he didn't agree with his brazen tactics

Guilliman is the greatest primarch...hands down. If the emperor would have made him warmaster things would have been quite different.
