Hey Rich, fellow Toronto resident here. I was listening to 99.9 this morning on my drive to work and they had a segment asking women "Do you have a backup partner" and the amount of female call ins that so non-chalantly said they had multiple back ups incase things don't work out with their man was staggering. These women are spinning plates like never before while men are becoming doormats and investing all their eggs in one basket. This dating market really has given all the leverage to women. Men, never, EVER negotiate your dignity, time, and value with a woman to keep her around. Just know she already had her exit strategy planned from the moment she started dating you.

The purpose of the fist date is to decide if you want to have a second, third, and so on. This should really be simple and low stress. You're just meeting ideally in a low stress environment to get to know each other a little. Coffee of drinks is perfect for this. It doesn't need to be fancy and if she demands you spend lots of money on a woman you just met she's already telling you what kind of woman she is on that first date.

I met my wife at a blind date. The evening went well, she didn’t talk that much and I didn’t think she would want to see me again. It was midnight when we left our mutual friends house when she came to me and said that she really enjoyed the time and that she wanted to meet me again. I was shocked. A couple of days later. I read a ridiculous story in the Wall Street Journal a few years ago about a woman who would go on dates with guys she had no interest in just to eat at the finest restaurants in New York City. The men (suckers) paid for the meal not realizing they had no chance with her. She admitted she did this at least 4 times per week because on her salary she would never be able to afford to eat at these fancy places.

I went on about 25 dates from apps before finding a gf in the real world. Of the 25, I’d 22-23 straight up catfished me. Do not ever plan anything extravagant, you need to actually see them before that is a consideration. I am a single, never married woman and I have always liked inexpensive dates. The women who made these demands are idiots. My best dates have always been absolutely free dates. I enjoy things like free concerts or walks in a park. I have noticed that men who take me on expensive dates expect sex after the date. I have never been promiscuous so I definitely don't want to go on a first date in which the man has spent lots of money. Lots of women feel the way that I feel. Men that meet women who believe that expensive dates are mandatory are not sincere. An expensive date is something that you do with someone that you have known for awhile.

I am past my prime but I preferred inexpensive dates even when I was in my prime. I didn't date in high school because I was young and innocent plus I was painfully shy and wasn't interested in dating. When I was a college freshman, older men would come to the college to get dates with young coeds. I accepted a date with an extremely attractive, wealthy, older man. He took me on a very expensive but boring date. Because he spent so much money on the date, he assumed that I was going to have sex with him. I was a virgin who definitely didn't want to have sex with an older man that I didn't know. I eventually lost my virginity two years later after going on inexpensive dates with my boyfriend for a year. We eventually broke up because we were both immature but I learned from my failed relationship that I had more fun going on inexpensive or free dates than I did on expensive dates. After I graduated from college it was easy for me to get dates. During my 20s, I normally went on several dates a week. I preferred the inexpensive or free dates to the expensive dates because men that take you on expensive dates normally expect sex. This is when I discovered that many men are hypocrites. Men liked me because I was an attractive woman with a low body count but men hated me if they spent money on dates without sex. When I entered my 30s, I became really popular with men because I looked a decade younger than my actual age. My mother, father, and only brother died when I was in my 30s and I gradually stopped dating. My only sister died when I was in my 40s. I didn't date again until I was in my early 50s when I reunited with a man that I had dated in the past. He spent a lot of money on me and I felt obligated to have sex with him. We eventually stopped dating and went our separate ways. I am now 68 and in spite of my advanced age I still have men in my life that want to date me but I turn them down. Ironically men my age are willing to spend a lot of money on a date because they assume that I will be so grateful for the expensive date that I will have sex. In my old age, I have absolutely no interest in sex. I have never really been very sexually active so I would prefer to go on either inexpensive or free dates in which sex is not required. Maybe I am weird or maybe I am asexual but I am not looking for a sexual relationship.

I was never demanding on dates even when I was young and cute. I never thought that I was attractive but in my 20s I went on frequent dates. I learned that when men spent lots of money, sex was expected. I had to really know and like my date to agree on going on an expensive date. When I was in my mid 20s I actually dated a millionaire. He wined me and dined me because he thought that I was beautiful and he assumed that I was a virgin. I enjoyed his company but I wasn't interested in a permanent relationship. Since he was rich, I didn't feel bad about going on expensive dates with him. I was very shy and demure plus I had dated several of his friends without anything remotely sexual happening. The millionaire actually asked me to marry him because he assumed that I was an innocent virgin. I explained that I was a sexual novice but that I wasn't a virgin. I also told the man that I would only marry for love and that I wasn't in love with him. He offered to buy me a designer wardrobe and take me on expensive vacations. I did not love the man so I told him I didn't need or want his money. We went our separate ways and I lost track of him. I am now 68 years old and I admit that I am no longer in my prime. I have actually stopped dating because men my age want to spend money on me because they assume that if they spend money on me that I will have sex with them. I still get frequent requests for dates but I turn them all down. The bad thing about being old is the fact that men assume that I have "hit the wall" and that I am desperate for sex. As a woman, I agree with Rich's advice. A short meeting over coffee is ideal - you know pretty quickly if you are attracted to the person or not. And if not, there is no reason to continue seeing them. Nothing worse than being stuck with someone you just met and having to carry the conversation so that you can exit gracefully. I also won't talk to men on the phone before the meet. I've done that in the past - went well on the phone and fell apart at the meet. Very awkward.

Asked her out if we could walk around our neighborhood as she lived only less than a mile from me. She refused, and suggested that she would prefer to walk at the coastline of San Francisco which was about a 30 minute drive from where we lived. I am a guy, and I refuse to go to most of those places -- even when I am not on a date. However, T.G.I. Friday's, Longhorn Steak House, and Outback Steak House are not on the list. So they must be the places to go. It would be more helpful if they provided a list that are acceptable -- make them come up with the date ideas. In most areas there are plenty of other options, like local ethnic restaurants: Chinese, Thai, Japanese, Italian, Greek, Mexican, Spanish, Indian, etc. The purpose of a first date is to find out if you want second date. So it should be short (an hour of less), simple (nothing fancy or too expensive), and sweet (you put some thought into it).

Art museum, zoo, musical theater, walk in the park, hockey game, paddleboarding, movie theater, or arcade bar are what I lean towards. I live in St Louis, the first four are free. The back ones don't cost more than 40 all in. None are food calls

My advice is to make the woman work to get that first date with you. If she isn't demonstrating much interest then she will fall by the wayside and you will save yourself a waste of time money and from a likely rejection. Try to find out more about her. Coffee date is the best. It allows you an easy escape. You meet at the cafe, barely recognize her because she lied about her pics and weight, so you stay a gentleman, pay for the coffee, sit and chat, then say it was nice meeting her, walk her to the door where you tell her it was a pleasure to meet her, and go your separate ways. Yes, you're going to get a sad face and probably a nasty text or VM in a few minutes, but you're free. You dodged a bullet. Imagine sitting with the horta beast for 1.5-4 hours.
