I'm a dancer myself, this dance teacher was actually nicer then some of the dance teachers I've had. There are diffrent types of dance teachers who have diffrent methods of teaching his method was more strict and some dancers thrive under criticism but others don't ether way I think all there work paid of and they did amazing.

The choreographer needed to encourage the girls more. I didn’t here one nice or good comment other than the girl choreographer and that doesn’t help the dancer. Dancers need encouragement to get through tough dancers. I get that they were being strict but not one complement is bad. I’ve seen a dancer for 9 years now and it feels amazing to know that you get something right and hear that from your dance teacher.

Dragon_ Fruit•-• i really agree. i am a competitive dancer who dances 12 hours a week and i not only get “work on this” but also “great job on that”. i think their “mental breakdowns” were mostly because they were only getting thing that they need to do better and no positivity.
@jessicatatum77696 жыл бұрын
I've trained in a competitive ballet environment for 10+ years. It's all mental. l'm over the moon if the teacher pays personal attention to me with a correction. Getting told you actually look awful doing a step and getting it fixed is AMAZING. It means that they care about your improvement, harsh or not. However, I also feel like they edited out a lot content from their rehearsals, and I highly doubt that there was no praise given at all.

People are saying the choreographers were too harsh on them, but the whole point was that they train like "professional dancers" As in the type that get to dance with celebrities. And thats the reality of it. They have every aspect of their body criticized and looked at to see how it can be better, and they have to take it and use that to improve, because thats their job.

I much prefer Ashleys transformation, the environment they were in just felt so forced and horrible rather than learning how to move your body and get better. It shows in their end result how they were trained for the month
@monikas.65367 жыл бұрын
I totally agree with you! And I also feel like the tittles for this two videos should be swapped. Ashley really trained like a professional (practising everyday, positive attitude, dealing with the corrections like a real dancer, taking technique classes). This video shows a lot struggles of begginer amateur dancers (learning to get togheter, to take critiques, to deal with insecurities), which is great, but I wouldn't call taking 3 classes a week a professional training.
@cookiesarelikecream7 жыл бұрын
I agree. I feel like for this specific environment it’s not beneficial to make beginner and newbie dancers train like professionals who have years of dancing experience. People who train in this setting know basic moves and footwork and how to move their body confidently. The harsh criticism isn’t going to help if they aren’t at the level the choreographers are expecting them to be. Ashley’s dance environment was perfect for a beginner because it required learning and more basic moves. However, I do understand that the point of this video is to show how professional dancers train and how tough it is. Especially when you’re dancing in a group because you have to be in sync. Hopefully this won’t scare or turn off newbies from wanting to learn how to dance
@miraculouslb_fan84687 жыл бұрын
I know you think that this environment isn’t beneficial for newbies but that’s how it works in the dance world. Also most people start learning at the age of 3 or so there aren’t many 20 or so year olds starting to learn how to dance.

As a person who started dance at 19, everyone around me had been dancing for years and years, many even for a decade, and I was a literal toddler amidst a crowd of experienced adults, in both physicality and mentality. So I really connected with these girls' emotional struggles, those things are what you face when you start dancing. For those of you criticizing, don't forget that you had a start too. These girls were complete amateurs and to ask them to instantly hone the mentality of a professional dancer, which is like that of metal steel, is unfair. We should really applaud them for their effort and big jump out of their comfort zone.

I struggle with my confidence every single day and it honestly puts you in a hole that takes so much time to get out of. I can give advice to just about everyone else to help them be themselves and do well,but when it comes to myself, it is a never ending battle. Seeing this video made me actually really happy. WELCOME TO COMPETITIVE DANCING. They don't care how good you are, you can always be better. As a competitive dancer I cried multiple times from the critique I got. You have to be better otherwise your not good. But they critique you because they want to see you succeed. Sorry to say but that coach was actually nice compared to my old one. I have danced since I was 4-5 so 6-7 years and it's hard work! I would be lying if I said that I haven't cried before and exam or show, there's just so much pressure and if you mess up you mess everyone up! I loved the teacher so much because he reminds me of my ballet teacher! She makes us work hard and she HATES wimps! You can NOT be a wimp in her class! This video so amazing and one of my favourite videos ever. Edit: Wow okay first I would like to thank you for over 2 k likes, that's amazing, and second, yes I believe dance is an art form too, it's both a sport and an art. Dance is also a way of expressing yourself, no matter if you've never danced a day in your life or have been doing it your whole life! Dance is hard and I'm not saying that your going to be amazing on the first day but saying that you don't need to be experienced to have fun, and having fun is the most important part of dance if it's a sport or not.

It has nothing to do with your figure or your hair. If anything Jazz and Parris stand out more which I think is a pro, not a con at all. Hey Jazzmyne, if you ever see this, please watch some of her videos you'll love it and I think it will change your point of view!

But that's the moment, when you can show them, that you rock even though you aren't tiny or skinny or anything like "the others". And if you fail, fail with grace and with an attitude that says "I'm still better than you'll ever be" because you probably are. (I know what I'm talking about, I'm 5'7 and 175lbs, I was always the "big one" in my dancing group)
@egeceler70247 жыл бұрын
Anna I feel you. I danced too and believe me, with girls who look like ballerinas. So I know that feeling. But it's sad that you have given up on your passion because of that. Nobody is perfect but it shouldn't be an excuse for anyone to give anything up. Self love is important. Don't let negative thoughts stand in your way. Plus, I find it boring when every single member of the group looks alike. Okay, so maybe you know your "difference", how about embracing it?

As a dancer who's been on a break for over a year now, this was difficult for me to watch, mostly because I was jealous of them. I miss that grind. I miss the hard work and dedication. But since I don't have anywhere to take class, it's been difficult to get back. I've lost a lot of my strength and flexibility. I'm so proud of these girls. I can relate to their insecurities and what they went through. I've also cried, I've also been picked apart piece by piece, insecurity by insecurity. Dance is relentless. I can tell they put in a ton of both physical and emotional work. And it paid off. I'm so proud. Thank you for showing me dance is still possible.

trust me, i understand this. i compete in dance, and the training is literally awful. the training we have before competition (we have to run laps and go over the same steps for hours before we get it right.) sometimes, we have panic attacks and we can’t walk the next day, but it’s all worth it. the dancing and competing is all about it being fun, and doing it for yourself. go buzzfeed

I am a 11 year old professional dancer. I have preformed in the Nutcracker 4 times and we start training in July for the show in December. Dancing is so much harder then people think. I also take dance class 3 times a week for jazz, contemporary and ballet. Imagine being 11 and constantly being criticized and critiqued about your body and every single move that you make. So, next time you see a dancer and he/she is just working it up on that stage, you gotta think: Wow. Cause all that work that goes into that one or two shows is incredible. Please appreciate dancers and the amazing shows we put on. ❤️

Being a full-time dancer myself it’s actually so refreshing to know that I'm not crazy for having a breakdown most weeks! These girls did this for a month and by week three they were really struggling with the mental game and that's only doing one style! I do all styles, all day, everyday. Mentally it's challenging but I feel like when I tell people that I'm mentally struggling that always say "why its only dancing" but try being put down for your body imagine everyday, having to stare at your body and insecurities in a mirror and the constant rejection of the industry. People always ask me "if you’re feeling like that and are being told those things why do you still do it" but it's the love for what I do and being on stage that gets me through everyday. Thank you for showing such a truthful video about what its really like to be a dancer!

Although it comes across rude, their hard critiques that are meant to better the performance (This happens in all occupations but especially in dance, it is a hard sport that calls for a lot of "perfection"). I do agree that both of them could have been a bit nicer due to the girls being relatively new to dance however the teachers, being professional dancers/choreographers, have been conditioned to tell the truth to better their performance (sometimes the things that seem most brutal cause the most change). The girls all killed at the end despite their previous experience so all the instruction given helped. I personally know this to be true because I take dance myself too.

Ashly's transformation was a beginner learning how to dance like a beginner. This video is people with minimal dancing experience (probably not that different from Ashly in terms of the technical stuff) learning how to dance like it's been their job for years (and the coaches were still probably going wayyy easy on them, if they were pros and they performed like that during rehearsals they would've just been straight fired lol). The stress constantly gets to people who have been in the industry for years, of course it's going to get to them too. Being a professional artist means you have to suffer a bit so that you can become truly great.

@@christynj291 dance is almost always about expression and if you have very bold and distinguished features, people are especially drawn to looking at facial expressions. it's important that you emulate the emotion you're trying to convey with your body on your face as well. there's a thing called "lyrical eyebrows" haha and it's essentially moving your eyebrows to express emotions while dancing, mostly in lyrical dancing.

Jazzmyne is pretty the way she is. I hate people who decrease their self confidence. Meaning I know that every one in this world is insecure but gurl learn to be yourself and not care about what other people say about you. You do you gurl. Be yourself and do not think about what other people are going to say to you. In the end, it is your life and no one has the right to control it. So, have fun and be confident. Those insecurities are going to be there but you have that chance to use it to build your confidence. Life gives you many chances for that. All those people with insecurities out there, please embrace all your perfections and all your imperfections because no one is perfect. It is your mindset that makes you think like 'Oh, maybe I'm not good looking because I do not fit these standards of people for whom they think are pretty.' Just please do not think like that and do not degrade yourself. Because you are pretty the way you are.

I honestly don't think that jermeel was that hard on them. to be good, you have to know where to work on. You can't just be sugarcoated every single time. They are adults, they should be able to accept hardness. I agree they were kind of harsh but some criticism is good to build perfection
@aliyahrossiter59025 жыл бұрын
I understand that but being new to everything you don't need to tell somebody that they need to do something because of their eyebrows or call someone out on their weight, he was kind of harsh considering he doesn't know what their insecurities about themselves are

Being a dancer that has danced ballet for twelve years with three different companies, I can tell you how hard it is mentally and physically. The amount of times I woke up with sore muscles or break downs over solo's and etc, dance is difficult. I respect people who take part in dance and I really want to spread awareness over the fact that dance is not easy and takes a lot of practice, sweat and tears. To finish this off there is no such thing as a perfect dancer, every dancer has something to perfect, never give up xx :)

Alfie and me i agree, i dedicate my heart body and soul to ballet, even with those emotional breakdowns, it is always worth it in the end, doing what i love to do.

this guy irritates me. the things he was saying to them was way too harsh. if they wanted perfection they would’ve asked for it but they didn’t and the things he was saying and criticizing their looks like that was too much. i liked Ashley’s choreographer soo much better
@chimichanga26987 жыл бұрын
gubble bum That's his job, he's telling them this so they can be better. If not the performance would have been mediocre because no one would have told the flaws straight forward to them. With dance evrything must be as perfect as it can be-expression is everything, energy is important, and movement/the way your body moves is key. He was not being too "harsh", he was helping them.

i have to face being critiqued everyday in dance, after doing it for years, it gets easier to take. but really it gets to you sometimes. it’s the choreographers job to make you look best. it’s not like they choose to say everything to you. but i like that you care for them so kudos to you

As a dancer I know exactly how they feel having their bodies being critiqued like that so much. Especially when you have an exam. You just want to cry after every practise. Your told every one of ur insecurities. If you can't do it as well as everyone else they make sure you know it. If ur not flexible then girl don't expect to be having a solo or being in the middle or front. Be prepared for humiliation in front of ur whole class. People don't realise that it doesn't just make you physically tired but mentally and it's harder than it looks!

Me too! i was a ballet dancer for 11 years (im 14) and i would have my body critiqued ALL THE TIME! i would cry after practice and still kept taking classes until i was 13

what kind of dance schools are these?! to critic a dancer's body... our body types are no thing to get in our way, i am a dancer too a bellydancer, the only thing that had made me cry is the told i been doing a move wrong in time, but that was just a moment and had to pass it, we are disciplined to be on time, follow the rythm memorize harmonize with the partners, practice to the end and the smile wich is important, respect to eachother and jealousy is never welcome, the body Never had been critized, for any detail there be a solution with the costume and the one who gets to be in front just need to be the best dancer on each coreography and all of us get a spot.

🖤 I've been dancing for four years since I was ten and I'm not flexible at all so it's really difficult being given background choreography while the flexible ones are centre stage and look amazing. When I watch recordings of me dancing I feel terrible because I don't think that I'm very good, but I don't care because every dancer will know that amazing feeling after you've finished a routine and you know that no matter what you're doing that you love 💗 anyone else agree?
@katarina80867 жыл бұрын
I totally agree with you! I was the same as you, I was not flexible at all, but now I stretch everyday and I've gotten so much more flexible so that may help your flexibility if you stretch everyday.
@MissMiserize7 жыл бұрын
Why don't you try yoga for flexibility? You don't have to go into the spirituality and meditation, just do the poses. I'm sure for someone like you it'll be easy and you'll progress quickly. It's good for learning how to balance too.
I was exactly the same! I spent 5 years at a studio always being in the back. I always felt discouraged but I still danced year after year and finally, my last year dancing there, I made captain of open. I wasn't the most flexible nor the most flawless technique. What stood out about me was I came to every practice, tried my hardest, worked to improve, took corrections, and did it all with a smile. I looked like I actually enjoyed myself, because I did. Basically what I'm trying to say is I agree with you😂

Definitley! I've been dancing for 9 years, and I'm tall and not very flexible so I always get stuck in the back. I love dance, and its my passion but it can get very frusturating sometimes.

Guys stop. Stop saying "that's just how the dance world is." No, I call BS. I'm a dancer and you can absolutely have teachers and choreographers who critique you without shaming you or discouraging you. There is a difference. Look at Ashley's video. The guy she worked with was so nice, but still honest. The dance world is cut-throat, and there often are harsh body-shaming teachers, but that doesn't mean it's good. That doesn't mean it's okay. If anyone in this video ever sees this, YOU ROCK. You guys are so great, every single one of your bodies is awesome. There is no one definition of sexy, one definition of beautiful, you are all amazing.
