I really liked how Gene Wilder's Willy Wonka portrayed a mad genius that is on the verge of going completely psycho. It makes sense that an older Wonka would be a bit more pessimistic about the world and the people in it. Charlie was his last hope in humanity essentially.
@blankname6629

Yup that’s why it should not have been remade. The only obvious way to continue it would be to go forward in time or backwards. That’s why I love the snowpiercer theory that it is a continuation into the vast future of the wonka story.
@kathycoleman4648
@kathycoleman4648 10 ай бұрын
@@blankname6629 They did go backwards. This is not a remake. It's an origin story for the character. There is also debate on whether it's meant only as an origin to the 1971 film, or if they'll continue this Wonkaverse and leave the 1971 film to be its own thing. The great thing is that regardless of what they do, the 1971 film remains its own thing. So for me, at least, that means an opportunity to see if I enjoy both.

But your positive review makes me feel like we will have a good time as my son and partner are not looking foward to watching this. 🤦‍♂️ lol I'm 49 and remember the gene wilder classic but avoided the Johnny Depp version through common sense lol

I’d say it’s a great possibility, at least in terms of a sequel coming at some point. The creator had been waiting for Gene to pass, out of respect for him not wanting a prequel/sequel. (Apparently a week or so after Gene did pass, it was announced that this prequel would start being worked on)

Funny. My eldest son did Willy wonka play in the broadway jrs program this year. He got the mike teavee role and when rehearsing and such they took his prop toy gun from him and told him finger blast instead, when asked why since it’s just a toy prop for fun they just shrugged saying it was universal decision so all mike roles in the various programs can’t use it….. idk we thought it was dumb, has to be some dumb reason of todays things but thought funny thing to share.

Just witnessed Wonka 2023, a cinematic gem! Timothée Chalamet's Willy Wonka not only pays homage to Johnny Depp and Gene Wilder's iconic portrayals but brings a fresh perspective. The film masterfully balances dialogue and musical elements. Original songs from OG films were thoughtfully integrated, avoiding overuse. Standout moments include the well-placed Oompa Loompa and World of Imagination songs, featuring an unforgettable orchestral rendition. Chalamet's portrayal showcases remarkable character development and connection with other characters. The trio of villains, portrayed by Paterson Joseph, Matt Lucas, and Mathew Baynton, adds richness to the narrative. Paterson's Slugworth steals scenes with a charismatic and comical performance. Wonka 2023 has secured its place in my top three for 2023. A must-watch for surprises, great characters, and Chalamet's outstanding performance paying homage to the classics! I give it an 8.5 out of 10

Tim Burton's Wonka movie was actually more accurate to the book and even got approved by the Dahl Estate as the story they greatly prefer. Personally, I only liked the 70s movie because of Gene Wilder's charm; the rest really wasn't that great and the Oompa Loompa music was the same song played over and over again. In contrast, the Burton movie's Oompa Loompa music dared to make memorable & distinct songs for each kid's demise, and had far better set design to represent the different whimsical factory rooms. And Sir Christopher Lee was an absolute treasure.

@makasete30
@makasete30 10 ай бұрын
The thing is though that the same Umpa Lumpa song is far more memorable than any of the umpa lumpa songs in the sequel in my opinion. The other songs throughout the Gene Wilder original are also all distinct and a lot better than the Depp remake which are forgettable for the most part. I remember those original songs including Gene wilder singing. I think I remember 1 from the remake. They are very poor. Yes Gene Wilder was fantastic and much better than Depp - he steals the scenes in a way Wonka should. The set designs are naturally better and should be for a more modern show. I still found the demise of the kids better in the original and far more creative. I also didn’t need the Wonka origin story. Having said all that, my kids loved the Depp version and that’s who it’s made for, I guess. I think the original could be enjoyed more by both adults and kids.
@TrueMentorGuidingMoonlight
@TrueMentorGuidingMoonlight 10 ай бұрын
@@artimuos903 I'm telling them that anyway. And no, it's not hypocritical for everyone who hates those adaptations. You oversimplify it. You're neglecting writing quality and internal consistency that Netflix Witcher & Rings of Power both lack. I find that Burton's Wonka has both high quality and high faithfulness, with a pretty compelling narrative of a sad child who wanted to live out his dreams in spite of his strict dentist father... who actually loved him all along at the end. Change in itself is not bad; the thing that is different must be good or better than the original.

Why are we shitting all over "Charlie and The Chocolate Factory"? It's a better film. "Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory" is an iconic cult classic (one that I also enjoy) but it was a financial flop that everyone, including the original writer, hated. He hated it so much that adaptations to any of his works were banned until his death. After he died the 2nd film was made and his family said that he would've loved it. Both films were products of their times, but only one disappointed not only audiences but it's own writer. Everyone only knows about the first film because they ran it for free on TV because it was always meant to be nothing more than a giant advertisement that steered so far from the source material it could be considered its own thing.

fun fact: The Gene Wilder film was just an advertisement and didnt follow the source material at all. The creator of the book hated it so much he never let anyone make another film with his work. When he died his family let another studio have a shot at it. It was really accurate to the book and his family said he would have loved charlie and the chocolate factory as it was faithful to his work.

I’ve seen many people being very skeptical about this movie, and so that kinda led me to prepare the movie to be bad. But honestly, I felt myself smiling throughout the movie, and although some jokes didn’t exactly make me laugh, other jokes made me chuckle and breathe through my nostrils. The movie greatly explained Wonka’s backstory and showed foreshadowing that regards to the first movie. This was a charming movie. People should definitely watch it with their families, and all and all I rate it a 7.5/10 :)

I am not sure if the movie is about gay but I got the feel of Wonka is just DIFFERENT and it's about how to accept who you are and who your son is, despite how weird he is. I loved the ending of how Charlie rejected the fortune and it was actually Wonka who gained a new family. I am not sure if this is the original ending. But it has great forsight for a movie in 2005.

This Wonka movie is. Between a 7 or an 8 for me because when he says hold up reverse it, was the same line jean wilder Wonka said and when I saw slugworth I'm reminded of Charlie's grandpa mentioning slugworth, pure imagination made me tear up and what Wonka did for noodle and the others made me happy also when Wonka opened open his mother's chocolate and sees a golden ticket I said to myself so that's how he came up with that idea. What I didn't like was the fact that there's only one oompa loompa seriously I thought at the end when Wonka was making his factory there would be one last montage where Wonka with lofty will go back to loompaland apologize and hire all of them and pay them back for taking their cocoa beans leading up to seeing Charlie.

The "old" Willy Wonka movie was famously hated by its original creator Roald Dahl. He called it "saccharine, sappy and sentimental" and disliked the movie's focus on Willy Wonka instead of Charly. I can definitely see this movie setting up the three chocolatiers he won against getting back at him by sending in spies to steal recipes down the line. That Wonka started out like this, but over the years of having his stuff stolen and being unable to trust anyone eventually he turned into the more sarcastic darker man we see in the original. I can definitely see that being what ultimately happens. Wonka legit just became tired of having his kindness thrown back in his face. He ended up reclusive and more distrustful in what others say or do.

What Alex missed is this: from the FIRST song, we see the movie is literally showing that Wonka is daydreaming the fantastical Broadway show aspects and scenes we see throughout the film. Its to show that whether its zany or too out there, we're left with the notion that he might be daydreaming again, but as the audience we are just being entertained and only seeing this side of Wonka. It was a genius move by the director to di this and im seeing many negative reviews missing out on that. This was a great film, better than Depps (although its great in its own genre as wacky and unique), but not better than Wilder's. This is easily an 8 or 9

I must confess. I'm one of the few that actually likes the Tim Burton version. First off, the songs are way catchier than the original. Say what you want but Danny Elfman made the Oompa Loompa songs a lot more fun! Also, when they actually got inside the factory, I was amazed. It felt like we had stepped into another world derived from a child's fantasies. With the original, it felt more like... Cluttered rooms is the best I can describe it. Also, I kinda enjoy seeing the aftermath of what happened with the bad kids. I still laugh when I see Mike Teevee stretched out from the taffy puller. Now, I'm willing to grant Johnny Depp was probably not the best choice for Wonka. Maybe it could've done better if they'd gotten someone with a bit more eccentricity. But i did enjoy seeing the backstory with his father (although, again, maybe could've used someone besides Christopher Lee to play Wonka's dad.) And seeing his small shop before he had the factory. Plus, how can you not love the chocolate palace side story? So, I'm sorry, I know the original is the gold standard for many, but I like Burton's version better.

As a fan of the books I can say that Burton version is the better adaptation of the two, Burton clearly cared about making it faithful as possible with the source material, even the new stuff he inserted (Wonka's backstory) was done tastefully... As much as I liked Depp the only thing I would have changed is to have Jim Carrey as Wonka, his look and interpretation of Count Olaf from "Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events" would have fitted perfectly Wonka while also looking much more similar to Quentin Blake's illustrations.

I love how people forget the ending and the whole point of the original WIlly Wonka. Wonka was testing kids and acting like an evil angry sociopath to try and find the one pure and kind kid who wouldn't betray anyone and in the end he literally asked for forgivness for putting Charlie through everything. Wonka showed his true self only after Charlie gave him the Gobstopper, when he smiled and hugged Charlie and was happy caring and loving, why else would Wonka want a nice kid who's pure in heart if not because he's like that himself.
