💙 Who are we?
We are Ben and MP!
Recently we decided to purchase a two-masted wooden schooner in Brazil. The fun detail about our story is that the boat we bought was sinking and relying on many bilge pumps to survive so we had to lift it onto the dry to start a full refit. Once the boat was lifted (for the first time in her life) we realized that the work needed was much more than expected. Between bailing or accepting the challenge, we decided to go for the second option. Watch us as we bring Yabá back to life with the help of an amazing team of traditional shipwrights, sharing every phase of the process, overcoming the highs and lows and having fun along the way.

Fibreglass exhaust wrap is readily available from motorsports outlets in rolls that are just wrapped on and fixed in position with stainless steel bands or jubilee clips. There will be heat given off due to its thickness but it accommodates different shapes well. For a 'permanent' installation you could use a Rockwool insulation that is specifically formed in pipe halves and clamped together with an aluminium or stainless steel sheet casing. This will give a surface that you can touch without fear of burning as well as it acting as sound deadening. You need to talk to heating installers as its used in boiler rooms for flues and steampipes. Lastly, you could get the pipe ceramic coated in any colour that you want that acts as a heat barrier, please check on the anticipated surface temperature. As a last and probably an overkill precaution I would fit a sheet of aluminium to the woodwork above the pipe with a space of say 12-15mm above it to allow air flow. This will deflect any heat off the pipe and precvent the wood getting hot..

This ^ ^ ^ is great advice. I'm thinking you'll probably want to go with the fiberglass wrap. It's identical to the stuff you removed from the engine originally, minus all traces of asbestos. The heat shield might actually be a good idea because the exhaust is quite close to the floor beam and it's right off the turbo exhaust outlet. Wicked job on the boat!

Rockrool is the best, same product used in oil refineries and oil process platforms for insulating of high temperature pipes. Insulating this piping is important because if it is not well insulated, the temperature inside the engine room can rise and overheat the engine and even cause a fire, even with the cooling system running. The problem is that there is little space between the ceiling and the pipe, you would have to check the thickness of the insulation layer to see if it fits.

Make sure you soak the wrap in water before starting to wrap the pipe and use stainless wire or stainless zip ties to hold the wrap tightly in place. Also get a turbo blanket from wither a truck or Motorsport supplier. I can recommend Demontweaks for all items.

Agree with the exhaust wrapping comments and a metal shield spaced slightly off the deck beam. I think you will need to put antifreeze in the cooling system, not because of freezing but for corrosion protection. The dissimilar metals will cause a lot of corrosion to occur if you don't use some sort of coolant in the system other than just water.

A good roller and brushes for your large volume painting, in my opinion is a better choice for wood boats! And the time it takes to tape and protect the other areas is time consuming. And.........when you are on your travels, good brushes and rollers etc. Can be on board for touch up and you can be anywhere! PS have been a wood boat guy for 60 years. And in my old age still take specialty work to this day! And Yes! I LOVE WOOD BOATS. Live Aboard and cruiser for over 15 years. Sure wish You Tube was around then. I generally worked on boats and cruised and worked on boats from destination to destination. AWESOME LIFE! For the exhaust you need to check out high-end motorcycle shops. There is a fiberglass tape/wrap used for motorcycle exhausts to protect the rider's leg. There is also a high heat glue used in the door seals for wood burning stoves. This can secure the wrap in place then use a stainless steel wire to make sure it doesn't slide. Second........... A heat shield is needed between the overhead and the exhaust pipe. It keeps a space open for air to circulate in between the overhead and exhaust pipe. It can be 14-16 inches wide and 18-24 inches long and usually stainless , centered on the closest position of the pipe. This is similar to being code for wood burning fireplaces to protect the wall and celling in houses here in the U.S. ............................. enjoy

There is pipe wrap you can buy for heat shielding from any car parts or motor cycle store , just follow the instructions, pretty easy. The main thing I want to say is please put anti-freeze additive in your water in the engine. It increases the boiling point of the water and helps with stopping corrosive scale and sludge build up in the cooling system (especially in the heat exchanger) It also helps track down coolant leaks because the water is a different colour. Thanks for the video.

Header covering for the exhaust loop. It’s a wrap for car exhaust. I use it on the hot rods I repair and build. I’ve put it on my motorcycles too. It will cut down on heat and will prevent being burnt if you touch it. It comes in rolls. They make different widths also. I have used old fire station hoses in the past too but I think that’s what was on there originally. If you do that just wrap a heavy aluminum foil over it to contain the fibers. Looking good. Thanks for sharing your progress with us.

As a former mechanical insulator my number one choice for the exhaust would be a Ceramic Fiber with a Satanite Refractory backing, than wire it on with bailing wire, ceramic wool is the best heat resistant fiber out there. You could also use rockwool.

I know there are some exhaust wraps that will help, but I wouldn't touch it when it's running cause it's still going to be warm. Check with a mechanic or exhaust muffler shop for a wrap and shield. But now I have watch every week I can say, I am excited for you guys. And can’t wait to see the final project before launch. I know if it was my boat I would have a huge party on launch day. And christen her with a bottle of Champaign broken over her bow. I feel after such a life this old boat has had, she deserved this rebuild. But at the same time I really don’t think I would have done it, but I am 60 years old and you guys are young. Would love to know when you launch her what it cost for this rebuild. The wood alone probably cost a fortune. But wow you 2 have learned and have done so much. What a great job you 2 have done. MP is a good mechanic, good job girl on this engine rebuild. Ben your rebuilding and planning skills is been genius.

I hope that hose from the pump to the oil pan is certified for use with oil. Oil and rubber don’t work well together. The rubber hose will swell up with time and start leaking. Not something you want happening when you are miles and miles from shore. You might consider installing a piece of sheet aluminum to protect the deck brace above the exhaust pipe. That and the fiberglass wrap should protect the wood well enough.

18:48 Motorcycles (old school ones) use a fibreglass woven band (webbing in Dutch) to wrap the pipes...So look for Pipe Wrap Tape or Band... The tape is designed to go on the hottest part of the exhaust system...but to be safe I would do at least a double wrapping and use the second layer of banding to fasten a couple of stainless steel mounting brackets (strips of stainless) so you can mount an aluminium heat shield or several around the hottest part of the pipe. To be extra safe I would put a piece of cement board on the the ceiling beam right above the top of the siphon, just in case... The rest of the exhaust pipe I would either single wrap or use hose clamped heat shields.

I'm sure you just used water for leak testing. but after you get everything shook out. drain the water and punt in a coolant that is rated for your system. Take a minute and research this. Very important, due to the environment and dissimilar metals within you cooling system.
