Hi James! It is lovely. What I have came from an orchard so isn’t in the best condition as far as it was never end-grain sealed, and there are lots of cracks, which apple really likes to do, but it is pretty. May try to get some fresher cut bits at some point 👍

Hi 👋 Lisa , So That was a bit tight on there, there is a device that you can get which they normally use for removing things like oil filters. It is a handle with a leather or rubber strap on it you might be able to make something up, Handle needs to be 10 to 12 inches long to give you leverage, and the leather or rubber needs to be fixed very well to the handle, And the idea of it is that you wrap the leather strap around your article that you have turned on your wood-lathe , in the anticlockwise direction so you have around two or three layers of leather strap are wrapped round your product then ideally to try and get the handle when it’s tightened up pointing upwards at the back so when the article is locked in position on the shaft you can then pull the handle towards you and it should then make it easier to unscrew the bowl or job or whatever you’ve got on, I hope this will be some help, I think as well you might even be able to use or modify a ratchet strap. Hi 👋, At least you know it won’t come off, In my years of working for myself my first workshop was quite small around 8 m² roughly and could never find anything so started to put tools together in respect of drills will be together saws 🪚 will be all together, Then in 2005 2006 I moved into a huge workshop considering I was working by myself I’ve got a serious amount of work on making very large doors and windows for barn conversions my workshop was approximate 8 m wide by 35 m long plus a space to park my van in inside so I can load and unload in the dry. This then gave me another problem take measures pencils I’ll have to make sure I’ve got them are there in my tool box ,That I wheel around the workshop, I’d end up leaving it on the cross cut saw then go back to the workbench then realised I’ve left my tape measure then have to walk back down the other end of the workshop to get my tape measure I think one point I went out and bought five tape measures and left them at certain points in the workshop to make it easier, There is a saying there is a place for everything and everything in its place, and that’s what I’ve always tried to do, you use something put it away, Now all I have is a small basement 7m x 11m , I still have a lot of my tools/ machinery but not a lot of room to walk around. I am hoping to put a new floor in garage and finish the roof of this year, which I hope will help so I can work, I am obviously retired but there’s still a lot of things I need to do on the property that I own in France, Sorry that is enough for me rabbiting on I get carried away as I live by myself, Stay safe I hope you find a strap and look forward to your next project. I really enjoyed watching this video, Lisa. Good job on I'm getting that thing mounted. Let me give you one of my tips for working with worm screws and paralyzed hands, in my case. What I will do is remove the worm screw and bottom-finished piece entirely, mount it in the chuck, then use a 19 mm wrench on the worm screw after locking the spindle. That is the method that works for me. Another thing I was going to comment was just how much I always appreciate the way you and I think I like. I see a problem coming your way and how I would solve it and you often do the exact thing that I was thinking. The same goes for our finishing process. Just a comment. Have a great weekend and be well!

Absolutely wonderful that you show how you work through those issues. Thanks!

Hi Tricia! I have 2 strap wrenches and I normally use the larger one to remove a blank from the wood worm screw if it gets stuck. But I couldn’t find either of them and cut out the 10 minutes of me and wandering around the shop muttering “where the hell did I leave those things!?!” 😂 My shoulders in particular are weak - just had an arthrogram MRI on my left shoulder Wednesday, which slips in and out of socket if I move wrong, so that doesn’t help. I had started doing yoga in January and that was making a big difference in a short amount of time but had to put that on hold cuz I tripped and went sprawling on the concrete floor in my resin/laser room. Bruised the 💩 out of my knee and am still waiting to be able to knee on it again! This getting old stuff does suck! 😂

Hi Clyde! I actually have 2 strap wrenches and couldn’t find either of them 🙄. I have a bunch of calipers and I use them that way too, but I wanted a min/max kind of thing especially when I’m turning green wood to go into the kiln - basically want to make the tenon as large as possible or the mortise as small as possible so when I finish-turn I have enough material to true up the mounting. Just one of those things that shouldn’t be complicated (like unscrewing the blank from the wood worm screw 😂) but is! 🤣

Lisa I really enjoy your videos. A few suggestions if I may. If you’re having trouble removing the wood worm screw you can take it out of the chuck and use a wrench to turn it out. I would highly recommend the Oneway big bite two prong spur. I use this $20 tool for most of my ruff turning which allows me to hold large pieces of wood and also allows me to adjust the placement of the tail stock is needed to better center the blank. I also find that using a pencil placed on the tail stock gives me the correct size for a small tenon. If you get tired of fighting with your Laguna banjo I highly recommend the Oneway upgrade.

Hi Harvey! Thanks, I appreciate it 😁. I have a big strap wrench…somewhere. That’s the problem…I looked for like 10 minutes before I gave up and was determined to just muscle it off 😂. I have taken the whole thing out of the chuck before but still had trouble holding the blank tight enough to loosed the wood worm screw. Next item on the list is to spend a couple of days in the shop excavating and cleaning and rearranging some things. Looks like a bomb went off in there…still! I’ll look into the OneWay 2-prong and I need to just bite the bullet and buy another live center with the cup point, probably the OneWay there also, but damn they are pricey! Banjo is better after having cleaned and waxed it but it does still make a lot of noise when I’m sliding it 😳

Which reminds me...(at the risk of being blocked)...how many wood worms does it take to screw in a lightbulb...🤔 ...just two...but how'd they get in there in the first place??? Matt

Get yourself a long piece of nylon webbing, like from a ratchet strap, next time you need to get some extra leverage on a piece.

when your wormwood screw (i dont know the proper name my self)gets stuck you can take it out of your chuck and mount the piece in the chuck and use a wrench please don't hurt your self whe its not necessary and adulting does indeed suck have to buy all your own stuff and pay bills or they turn stuff off

Nice piece Lisa, thanks for sharing. Your log looks very dry.. I have some very wet apple from a recently cut tree, any suggestions about how to dry it?
@LisaRamlow
@LisaRamlow 7 ай бұрын
Hi Simon! If you are making bowls, you can rough turn it and then dry it and finish turn it later. I made a kiln from a dishwasher and use that to dry my rouged pieces. You can also put the roughed pieces in a paper bag or cardboard box with the shavings and that will help to slow down the drying process. No matter what you do (leave it in log form, cut it into blanks, or rough turn and set aside to dry) you'll want to seal the end grain. I tried some homemade glue/water sealer and it didn't work well for me so I buy AnchorSeal 2. It seems pricey but it does go a long way. I still have almost half a gallon from the first time I bought it. Do be aware that apple (in my experience) tends to crack a lot and sometimes it doesn't matter what you do. I twice-turned an apple bowl, sold it, and it cracked several months later 🤷‍♀️ Also, if you rough a bowl to finish later, I'd leave it a little thicker than the 10% of the OD - the logs I've used warped quite a bit more than I expected and I almost didn't have enough wood left to make it round. Good luck!

Me neither Jean, but sometimes it just goes a bit sideways 😂. I wish I’d been able to keep the bark intact. But next time! 😁 This cat is Oscar, he’s about 11. Out other cat is Walter, and he’s the one who is in love with Bailey. We adopted Walter a few years ago and we think he’s about 4

I have a Laguna 18-36 what modification did you do to lock the spindle? Do you have problems with the banjo sliding on the ways? Mine only slides easily for a short while after cleaning and lubing.
@LisaRamlow
@LisaRamlow Жыл бұрын
Hey Dennis! Yeah, the banjo isn’t super smooth. It’s sliding better after cleaning/waxing but it’s still squealing and even just by the time I finished this project it wasn’t moving as freely. Another viewer said when I get tired of messing with it he recommends the OneWay banjo. Gary over @ThePapa1947 showed me how to make the spindle lock - here’s the video link: kzbin.info/www/bejne/d6uoqZxneZ2ml80

I have a question and I don’t mean for it to sound mean but is that the only color of epoxy you had. The bowl is beautiful but the epoxy to me takes away some of that beauty. I would have thought you would go with something like a black or brown CA glue that would blend instead of standing out.
@LisaRamlow

Hi Ronnie! No offense taken, it’s not my favorite either. This was the only Milliput I have - I thought about using coffee grounds and CA but went for the epoxy putty instead. Actually wish I’d done most of this differently now that it’s done but that whole box of chocolates thing applies to wood turning as well as life 😂
