Woodturning: Turning a Cherry Burl Bowl - The Just a Bowl’s Little Brother
In any case, I’m always nervous about cutting burls, so I searched for some videos on the decision-making process for cutting burls into turning stock. One of the best I found was by Jim Sprague of @SpragueWoodturning and I literally watched it 4 or 5 times. Because…cherry burl!
The cherry burl I am working with mostly encapsulated one of 2 branches and I was able to slice the other branch off and then split the burl roughly in half, leaving the pith on the side that the burl didn’t completely encase the branch. This is the piece we are starting with on this project, though I did slice about an inch and a half off to remove most of the branch grain and I’ll use those nearly bookmatched slabs in a serving tray or some other such piece. I was able to get another baby bowl cored from this piece as well and coupled with the baby bowl from the other side will become a lidded box
I used the Woodcut Bowl Saver coring system and could not be more pleased with the results. Here’s a link to the video I did the first time I used the coring system Woodturning: Turning The Big Green Monster into 3 Bowls using Woodcut’s Bowlsaver Bowl Coring System • Woodturning: Turning T...

You never fail to impress me. When one thinks about the tools used... all of them, quite apart from the brute itself (lathe), one minute using pretty darn strong wrists, arms and hands with pretty hard-looking movements then, the next minute being so delicate plus of course with your 'keen' eyes all going together to produce such beauty and delicacy.... As said once before at least, it's a privilege to watch you. I admire you Lisa. A fabulous job... and I know this might sound naff from someone who's not a wood- turner... flippin'well done. May I join the queue of future "tenants" of the piece? 👏👏👍 Pam

There is for sure a lot involved in woodturning, especially if you get and process your own wood blanks as I do. I’m still waiting for the arms of steel to arrive but I’m seeing the half-century mark on the horizon and my body doesn’t respond like it used to 😂

Crazy grain patterns in your bowl but it looks great. I’ve watched your videos for a while now and you get a bowl looking good by my judgment and then you’ll fiddle with it some more doing minor things. Guess you’re a perfectionist Lol. I really enjoy your commentary! The comment about your camera made me laugh! Stuart
@LisaRamlow

Hi Stuart! Yes, perfectionist-guilty as charged 😂. Even when I try NOT to be a perfectionist, it just happens and sometimes to my detriment🤷‍♀️. It’s always frustrating to realize when you’re all done recording that one of the camera didn’t focus right or shut off or ran out of space 🙄. The joys of YouTubing, eh!? 😉

Thanks for the smart design of the stand to hold the logs for cutting in half. I just made a bench top version that works well in my shop and I was able to safely cut 5 logs/burls today, so I have some blanks to work with and get prepped to mount on the lathe. If I can figure out a way to attach a picture I will. All the best!
@LisaRamlow
@LisaRamlow 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Edward! Can’t take credit for the design of the stand since I followed another KZbinr’s video but it does work nicely! I’m going to extend the boards that make up the V part so the smaller pieces will catch and hold but aside from that I think it’s brilliant! Not sure you can attach a pic but my email is in my channel info so feel free to send a pic there. 😁

1. I love your curvy toolrest! What is it called? It looks seriously useful, not the least because it's shape would really cut down on repositioning time. 2. I feel so pleased when coring systems are used! Such a pile of shavings, and, potentially, lost income, otherwise! You got 3 decent sized bowls, one baby bowl, and a serving tray, instead of just 2 bowls. I'd call that a win! 3. Some people despise baby bowls, but, in my family, we have Many uses for them, particularly when playing board games. 4. At my guild, we have a 55° gouge, which makes turning the bottom corner very much easier. Our usual guild grind is 45°. 5. Thank you for sharing this video with us, and thank you for the hard work, and dedication, which you put into making these videos, too!

Hi Stephanie! 1. This is the RoboRest made by RoboHippy. I have a large one and a small one. I’m not sure they are available on the market at the moment but there are others out there who make similar rests - I think they are called J-rests or curved rests (go figure 😂) 2. I’m very glad I got the coring system-it was expensive but will pay for itself in not too long! 3. I quite like baby bowls as well, though these 2 are going to make a pretty sweet lidded box. I wanted to be able to keep the figure in the center of one of them and that will be a domed lid. Looking good so far! 4. The grind on my 5/8” Thompson gouge has a 60deg bevel which might be the same as is on the BOB gouge so I’m not sure why I have such a hard time keeping bevel contact with it! I also have a 40/40 grind and a couple of 55deg and sometimes I try all of them! 😂 5. Thank you for watching and for taking the time to leave me such a nice comment 😊

I’ve been doing woodworking for over 20 years and always wanted to turn but was afraid of it for some reason. Got over that and it’s my absolute favorite thing on the planet! 😃

Great job. That cherry is so beautiful. What kind of coring tool is that. Been thinking of getting one, but not sure which one. Any suggestions. Nice job.

Hi EJ! This is the Woodcut BowlSaver system and has 2 knives. They also make the BowlSaver Max which has 3 knives and will do a larger core, but honestly I didn’t think I’d be turning many bowls big enough to require a larger coring option. OneWay also makes a great coring system and is very popular. There are a bunch of videos on YT with in-depth demos of the various systems. Shawn at wortheffort woodworking has one on the OneWay and McNaughton systems and Mike Waldt has one on the Bowlsaver, but there are several for each system.

Very nice, Lisa! How long since the burl was originally cut? I have about 10 +/- burls waiting for inspiration.....cut maybe 4 years ago. Love your videos.

Hi Louis! I think this burl was cut from the tree a few months ago, though just the branch on either side. I cut it a few weeks ago and turned the 3 bigger bowls within a few days of cutting it. I have the 2 baby burls on the lathe now and am making a lidded box - they are not moving much and haven’t cracked. I kept them in some of the shavings until I got to them but they are pretty small so I didn’t expect them to go too wanky too fast 😁

Nicely done Lisa! Given the burl grain goes every which way have you found them to warp much as they dry? I’m wondering if it is less than a traditional grain bowl.

Hi Amy! I have not found the burls to warp as much as normal grained pieces. They did move slightly but not too much 😁

Burlicious LR 👍. Why the two different abrasive pastes? 🤔
@LisaRamlow
@LisaRamlow 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Chris! The Ack’s is a bit more coarse than Brad’s - I think some of the abrasive pastes in the UK come in different grits? I just really like the way it looks and feels using both pastes and since it’s quick to apply I usually go for it.

Lisa, Can you recommend a Lathe for a beginner? I like your videos!
@LisaRamlow
@LisaRamlow 2 жыл бұрын
Hi John! There are lots of options as far as lathes go and it will depend on what you think you want to do with it. Lots of people start with basically the cheapest lathes you can get, Central Machinery from Harbor Freight, RO make sure they’re going to like turning before they spend a bunch of money. I knew I was going to like it so I started with a Delta midi lathe, which would do a 12” bowl and I was pleased with that lathe. However, I decided I wanted to do larger bowls so upgraded to the Laguna with the 2HP motor and am very happy with it. Jet makes very popular lathes and have mini, midi, and full size lathes. Top of the line are probably OneWay, Powermatic and Robust. Your budget will dictate the direction you go. If you have a turning club in your area that’s a great way to learn and see how you like brands, etc. Turning is super fun - prepare to be addicted! 😁

Do you ever sell any thing you turn? I like it that you got 3 bowls.

Hi Margaret! I do sell me work, on my website (which is pretty pathetic at the moment) and at some local shops and galleries. You can reach me by email if you’re interested in something in particular. Lisa (at) lisaramlow (dot) com

I'm looking to get into wood turning. Does anyone have advice on a good lathe to start? I don't need anything huge or that will break the bank until I know what I'm doing.

Hi Jamie! First and best advice is to join a local wood turning club. The AAA has chapters all over the US and I believe there are equivalent organizations in Canada and across Europe. You’ll get lots of help and encouragement and can usually do some turning on the club lathes to get started. They can also a lot of times help sourcing wood and equipment. As far as lathes go, I started with a Delta midi lathe and I know a ton of folks who use the Central Machinery lathes from Harbor Freight as their intro machines and then upgrade from there. Where are you located?

Is the difference between "wet" and "dry" shown by the different shading of the wood? I'm just wondering if what I see is what you are describing.
@LisaRamlow
@LisaRamlow Жыл бұрын
Hi Heather! Yes, it’s the shade. As I’m cutting it’s a little darker because it exposes the wood a little deeper, but you can see it change as it dries.
