Woodturning: Turning A Dragon Egg-Mallee Burl & Resin Underwater Cavern Egg+BBQ Rotisserie Hookup
I’ve been wanting to try a hybrid dragon egg for a while now, and I finally got a hold of some brown mallee burl. I used blue and green mica powders and some blue glitter on the burl surface, forming the “stalactites” and “stalagmites.” I used Alumilite Clear Slow resin tinted with a bit of alcohol ink and Marabu Rainbow (sparkly!) alcohol ink for the water, and coated the whole piece with Alumilite Amazing Clear Cast resin for the top coat/finish.
I also go over how I hooked up a BBQ rotisserie motor to my Laguna 1836 lathe using the 5/8” threads on my spindle (these are normally used for mounting vacuum chucks) and a few bits from the local big box store. Zac Higgins from NV WoodWerks did a pretty in-depth video of how he did his BBQ Rotisserie motor and you can check that out on his channel. ‪@ZacHiggins‬

Hi Martin! I normally use different resin for most things, and neither kind I currently have (Alumilite Clear Slow and Liquid Diamonds) has been this thick - wasn’t sure if it was supposed to be. It worked ok and I guess if it were too thin it might just slide right off. I’ll have to experiment a little and see if warming it up a tad makes any difference. Thanks for watching 😊

Thanks Dave! I made it so the rotisserie motor isn’t dedicated to the lathe as I’m also building a setup that I can use to coat tumblers with-I just attach it to whichever thing I want to use and I’m ready to roll. I bought the whole Charbroil rotisserie kit, but it turns out all I used was the motor - I was able to find the 5/16” square stock in the specialty bins at Menards so I decided not to destroy the bits for the rotisserie in case i actually want to roast a chicken on the grill. You can buy the motor separately but make sure the square hole that turns the spit is the same size in the event it’s a different brand.

Epoxy is strictly a mechanical bond. For a maximum strength glue joint use 60-80 grit sanding to prep the joint. System 3 epoxy T-88 bonds damp wood better than most epoxies, the cure time is 24 hours.

Hi there! When I started turning I had a Delta Midi lathe, which has a 1”x8tpi spindle thread and my Nova G3 chuck threaded directly into the spindle. When I upgraded to the Laguna, I hit a Nova SuperNova2 chuck that threads directly onto its spindle, which is a 1-1/4”x8tpi thread. I wanted to keep my smaller G3 chuck so I ordered (from Woodcraft I think) a Nova spindle adapter which lets me use the smaller chuck on the larger spindle. Definitely worthwhile! Absolutely beautiful piece as always, 2 questions what is the purpose for the pressure pot and how big of a piece of wood can Your lathe handle?
@LisaRamlow
@LisaRamlow 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Ed! My lathe has an 18” swing. The pressure pot squishes the air bubbles in the resin down into microscopic sizes so there aren’t any voids. Some resins can be used without a pressure pot and some, Alumilite Clear and Clear Slow in particular, must have a pressure pot or the resin will just bubble and looks like a bubble bath.

How much pressure do you put in your pressure pot???
@LisaRamlow
@LisaRamlow 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Robert. It depends on your pressure pot - if you are using a converted Harbor Freight pot it’s only rated for 50psi but I never put more than 40psi in it. My “new” monster 10 gallon pot is an industrial paint pot that will handle probably 100psi but I stop at about 60-70. Quality of the pot is most important and don’t exceed their safety recommendations - one of those things exploding would be a very bad day.

Hi there! The ones that are for sure good for resin are Cooking Concepts Chopping Mats. They come in a 2-pkg at the Dollar Tree stores, maybe other dollar stores too? Anyway, there are some that aren’t the right kind of plastic and DO stick to resin. I got a set of 4 different colored ones from Menards and they don’t work for resin. HDPE (#2) and PP (#5) are the types used most with resin and release really nicely 😁
