For the most part, I'm a pretty even-keeled guy. I don't lose my temper easily I don't usually get too emotional (outside of laughter) in the shop. But when disaster struck while routing mortises in my drawer front, I kind of lost it and threw my bluetooth headset on the ground. Perhaps it was my subconscious giving me an opportunity to try out the new version with the gel ear cushions. Anyway, the reason I got so upset was because the error was due to a bit malfunction. Oddly enough, I'm much better at dealing with mistakes caused by my own stupidity. Thankfully, I did make a backup piece and was able to use that to complete the drawer front. I also upgraded my bit to this one from Eagle America, which features a much better design for securing the bearings.
Aside from my temper tantrum, this video covers the construction and shaping of the top, attachement to the base, and the mortises in the drawer front. It's jam-packed with information and problem-solving.

I have to say Marc, I think the extra stressors of the world we live in make tempers worse right now. I'm normally incredibly mild mannered, and almost never get angry, but these last few months have been a bit different. Everything is just amplified right now, and since no real harm has come from my instances of increased frustration, I try not to get down on myself about it. You shouldn't either! The world's on fire, and occasionally things boil over right now. Broken headphones just aren't that bad of a consequence for losing your temper. I like how you talked about it though. This project is gorgeous! I've really been upping my woodworking game lately, chasing the examples you set.

I didn't have a better option at the time, so I kept trying. Eventually, I was fed up, and yeah, Hulk smash! The little clips is called a "C" clip. It slides in the groove on the bit. I would bet it was heat build up that got the clip hot and it flexed and broke or slide off. Maybe a short runs with it and checking often will help. being that the wood is dense (white oak) it likely adds some extra heat.

If the bottom bearing is held on with an Allen screw, use some low strength Loctite to keep you from breaking your head phones. LOL The low strength Lactate should be strong enough to hold the screw in place during routing, but let you remove it when necessary. Very nice desk.

Marc, So I carefully laid out my the joints (first Domino build) on my desk legs, marked them all so I knew which one went where and marked the aprons to know which one to connect to which leg ... I even put my four legs together right before the glue up verifying my triangle and the layout. However, I neglected to mark which apron should connect to which side. It seemed so obvious. Now I've glued the side aprons to what should have been the long apron locations. My legs are ~3 1/2" x 1.5" with a taper on the wide side down to about 1 1/4". Should I call this a design change or fix it? I'm already behind in the build and am leaning toward the design change, but wondered if you or anyone else had some feedback? Btw, always love your stuff all the way back from your early days. And really appreciate this desk series as it popped up just as I was starting my build. Your teaching ability as well as your craftsmanship has always been impeccable. Keep up the great work!

The Wood Whisperer Marc, well a design change wasn’t an option. Short apron side was now longer than the top, so on to fixing it. The flush trim saw idea was perfect. I really thought it would take forever to cut through with that saw, but it went very smoothly. Just had to square up the aprons and flush up the legs, the re-cut the dominos, which went surprisingly well. Everything came out well and got the finish done yesterday. Time to install and wait for the finish to cure. Thanks again Marc. I really appreciate learning how to deal with mistakes.

Marc, I'm curious about the templates you chose to use. You have a good deal more experience and skill than I do, so I'm really interested in your input. When working on such tiny areas where I need to match so precisely, my usual recourse is to make a template for the base, rather than a follow bearing. It's been my experience that even good bits flex when they get that small, and having something that follows the base instead tends to give me more precision. Is this something you considered, or is there a reason you can think of it just wouldn't have worked?
@woodwhisperer
@woodwhisperer 3 жыл бұрын
Well there’s always multiple ways to accomplish something. From my experience, if my template is an accurate representation of the mortises I want, a quality flush trim bit will faithfully reproduce it. And you can see my results here: no evidence of but flexing. It might be that you’re applying too much pressure or removing too much material at once if you’re experiencing significant flex. Using guide bushings and larger holes in the template is definitely a viable way to go and it’s a method I also use when making templates. But it was more trouble than it was worth in this situation so I kept it simple.

@woodwhisperer

When I say 4/4 I'm referring to what my vendor sells as 4/4, which is usually something like S3S. So it's just a bit over 3/4" in thickness before I ever start the milling process. True 4/4 rough should be about 1" in thickness, but that's not something I have access to. So I have to go to 5/4 if I want to have a decent thickness on a large top.

What an insane amount of effort to display that router in the video. Could have done the job ten times with a drill and a chisel.

Sure, but then you’d have nothing to gripe about Bill. 😊 Seriously though, I’d love to see pictures of your 10 perfect parallelogram through mortise and tenon joints done in the time it took me to do one set. Send me closeups too. I’ll be waiting.

@BillSmithem 3 жыл бұрын
@@woodwhisperer Seriously? You did everything exactly the same as you would have without the router except you made a jig to enlarge the holes a little bit with the router. The perfect parallelograms still depended on proper layout and your skill with the chisel. (and yes, I was exaggerating, but there's no way that was faster or better with the router)
@woodwhisperer
@woodwhisperer 3 жыл бұрын
Not exactly. In my case, the template was not only a guide for the router bit but also a guide for the chisel to define the outline. That takes a lot of pressure off knowing that you just need to work back to the line. Also, having the mortise walls established by the router bit means the final chisel strokes can be done by referencing from the existing mortise wall. I'm not saying that it cant be done by hand because obviously it can. But doing it with power tools offers a lot of advantages and makes like a lot easier when making the tenons. It's Ok that you'd do it differently. Let's celebrate having different approaches instead of pushing the "my way is better? mentality.

I was gonna timestamp the freakout but I guess you edited it out. :( Does that make this video title count as clickbait? Either way I think we've all been there! I've had a few router mistakes and fences move and hoo boy does it make the blood boil. Maybe next time consider adding an outtake like Drew Fisher does :D

I generally ignore advice from anyone using the term “real woodworker.” Buy what you want, use what makes you happy, and eff anyone that has a problem with it. 😊👍

www.zoro.com/zoro-select-e-style-ring-asst-255-pc-12-szs-rce1287stpa/i/G2650155/ Marc, I've run into similar issues with my router bits. I keep a kit similar to this for just such occasions. Another option is "snap rings", depending on the style of router bit.
