I purchased a JD-08 some months back. After a couple weeks of fiddling with it it just didn't gel with me, so I sold it. Made more than I paid, so that was cool, but I was *immediately* hit with the hardest case of seller's remorse I've ever felt. So naturally I turned right around and bought another one, and there ain't a snowball's chance in a warm place that I'd ever sell again. Having that much synth in something I can toss into my backpack with a little MIDI keyboard or drive from my guitar synth is a complete and total win.

It's nice seeing it played with a keyboard and not just sequenced. I use mine as an extra voice layered with my keyboard at home or with the keyboard at my church. Once you work around the bugs, it's a nice compliment to a keyboard or auxiliary sound. And it's more than just a pad and bass synth, too. It takes tweaking, but you can make some patches that bmenhance grand pianos and EPs. I'm glad to see you gave it another chance. 👍🏾

For quite a while I have owned the FA08 and the older DGX 500 and the newer DGX 670. I still have several other boards, but the main goto setup that I have been having the most fun with is the Arturia Minifreak and the DGX 500 hooked up as a controller for the Freak. I can spend hours on this setup without getting bored. The Minifreak standing on its own is an exceptional little piece of quality kit. Despite not the best keybed, the dgx 500 and the Arturia Minifreak are a formidable team. Someday Ill hook it up to the DGX 670...
@WoodyPianoShack3 ай бұрын
great setup! well, you will struggle to connect any other gear to 670 since no midi ins and outs.
@Dbentzjr3 ай бұрын
@@WoodyPianoShack yeah Midi overall has been a terrific pain for me and its largely why I gave up trying to make my own stuff. Its just easier to play without that extra midi lag anyhow. I do wish there were still easier, cheaper, affordable options like we used to be able to buy 2 machines and connect them but now we need a separate box and more wires and yeah, thats the modern midi masterpiece in a nutshell. For this reason, I was especially bummed out that the DGX 670 did not have audio in routing for its internal effects engine. I bet that would have been amazing with the minifreak and dgx670 combo.

I love the JD-800. But I'm not convinced by the Boutique form factor. The tiny controls and mini jacks just don't seem professional to me. I think people are better off with the JD-800 VST from Roland Cloud or the JD-800 engine on the Fantom for professional use.

@ChrisP3000x3 ай бұрын
Just curious, but what exactly do you mean by "professional"? Are you a "professional"? Thanks in advance, friend!
@geoffk7773 ай бұрын
@@ChrisP3000x No, in the sense that I don:t make my living by performing or recording. But I try to ensure that all of my gear is the kind of equipment that I'd want to use of I did perform. This means that it should be reliably constructed, use standard inputs and outputs and give decent output with low noise. It should also fit well into a standard rack or stand. Controls should be easy to see and use on a dark stage or while playing. The Roland Boutiques fail nearly every one of these criteria, whereas something like a Fantom passes easily. In building my studio, I have to be selective about what I buy since my budget and space are not unlimited. Anything that fails these tests, I am likely to dismiss a a toy or potental trouble source and reject.

@@geoffk777 so your definition of "professional " is only regarding live performance. And anything not for your future live performances are "toys".

@@ChrisP3000x No, my definitional of "Professional" is "The standard of quality that a professioal musician would expect from their working equipment". Someting that's not a professional-quality instrument msy be musiclly useful. But you can't rely on it to work reliably over a long period or to integrate smoothly into yr setup. That may not matter fo a particular recordng or performance, but it does matter when you're deciding what new gear to buy.
