that's what happens when you have a monopoly on making the game for the league that has a monopoly on a sport
@sharkodile225 жыл бұрын
I recently talked to my brother about this as he's a big sports game fan (Madden, NBA,) and he lead me to some enlightenment on this subject. You guys were dead on when you were talking about how sports fans just want the faces and the stats of the real players, but you undersold the point. They literally don't care about _fuck all_ else but it being a sport simulator. This complaining you're hearing about? A goddamn fraction of a fraction of the people who buy these games. They could piss, moan, fight, fucking Molotov a police station for all anyone ultimately gives a shit. As long as there's a monopoly on the licensing, vast majority of their consumers will keep buying these shitty games.
@RippahRooJizah5 жыл бұрын
I more or less figured this out a while back. You have people who like the entertainment, and you have people who know about the events surrounding the entertainment. This is why I feel, should EA die out, there would be a massive vacuum in the game industry. Regardless of how we feel about sports games (I don't mind them existing, really. Who am I to say there *can't* be a yearly football game), EA positioned itself that the company going away would be an amputation to the gaming market. Heck I know a guy who has outright said to me the only games he plays are the current sports games.
@sharkodile225 жыл бұрын
@@normandy2501 I really do feel for those who want some kind of competitive depth out of these games and have to deal with shit literally made to order for manbabies, _actual_ babies, and whales. Capcom's done some fucked up shit, at least they aren't pandering to the 12 year olds who want to buy cool skins, mash buttons into beating their friends _once,_ and never touch the game again.
@sharkodile225 жыл бұрын
@@RippahRooJizah EA going under would be interesting, but that's not the root of the problem. It started when the sports industry as a whole decided to sell their license to the highest bidder. The NFL, NBA, NHL, whoever the fuck could fix all this by selling their shit to developers who actually care about making good games instead of robbing people. It's gonna have to be a scandal. Uncovered legal and moral dubiousness within EA so great that professional sports leagues have no choice but to disassociate with them. Unfortunately they'd likely just sell to the next highest bidder, so it's a gamble.

I think the reason why Yakuza ads are acceptable while other ads in games aren't is because not only does it fit the hyper-realist nature of Yakuza (he says while Kiryu dodges missiles and rockets), but the Ads are almost completely non-interruptive. You're not getting interrupted by a commercial for Mandom deodorant every 5 seconds, instead its more like you see it in the background and you go "Hey, I know what that is. That's neat" and you continue on your way. Really, I think that's the trick to good and bad ad shilling in a game. As long as the ads don't interrupt the videogame in any significant way, and instead are just background noise, then you get a pass. Heck, ads as background might be better advertisement as well, because then you get the sort of subliminal "man, I'm thirsty. I could go for a Vernors" as your character passes by a poster that your conscious brain barely processes. Really, as long as you get to play the videogame, and the ads don't interrupt or distract you from the videogame, I feel most people probably would be fine-ish for the most part.

Racing games have being doing this for a while now. And its purpose at the beginning was for immersion instead of ads shilling. Now with newer games, it serves as both. It's a good balance between immersion for 'real world' experience, plus the developers/publishers can make extra $ with product placement, since it made sense seeing those ads on a race track.

I think another element of this that you guys missed out on in relation to Yakuza and normal Sports games before this bullshit and even the Alan Wake example which is that the ads do not INTERRUPT the game. You can walk right past that TV in Alan Wake, you can play Yakuza totally fine the game does not prevent you from playing more of the game to stare at an ad, the president talking scene is just another PART of the game, a patently absurd one, sure, but like, you just talk to a dude for a while. That's Yakuza, you do that in Yakuza.
