This was great! Start with practical advice (the real reason I was looking for the video), then show the nerdy "how" of the thermostat. Even the little crypto story at the end made me smile (sorry you lost the money though!) Thank you!

I can’t tell how much I appreciate this video. You should be an instructor with a Technical College…you have very clear in detail instructions for the average person/home owner to do DYI projects. Yes, I totally agree with OSHA when it comes with the hot water and sanitation which doubles the effects for a nice hot bath or shower! Thank you

Dear Jay, Your step-by-step demonstration is very easy to understand -- Just what I needed to be able to adjust the water temperature setting on my water heater. In fact, I just finished it a couple of minutes ago. I see that you've been complimented many times before on your gift for teaching. It's true. Thank you so much for putting this info out there for us.

I've always kept my water heater temps on the hotter side (140-150º or so). My rationale is that if the temperature is hotter, I'll use less water from the tank, thereby reducing the water that needs initial heating. I've (possibly incorrectly), concluded that saves me money but of course, that doesn't take into account the need to maintain the hotter temp so I have no idea if this correct. Do you have any thoughts about this? At close to 64 years of age, I'm not sure if I'm qualified as "elderly", but my reaction time is still pretty good. :-) Really appreciate all that you do - great info!
@WordofAdviceTV
@WordofAdviceTV 3 жыл бұрын
That is an interesting idea Phil. I honestly don't know which way is more energy efficient though. I have never tried doing an experiment like and it would probably be hard to track. If we listen to the US Department of Energy, 120 degrees is the most energy efficient. I am guessing that setting the temps higher uses more energy but I don't think it is by much. The reason is simple, the higher the temperature of something, the faster it cools off. Heat travels hot to cold and the bigger the temperature difference, the faster the heat transfer. That's what they say anyway 😄 I know that not everything in the world runs by the book. Maybe your way is better after all 😉 And about the elderly, I don't think 64 is that old! My dad is 64 as well but he had a stroke last year and the senses in his right hand are not as good as they used to be. I'm sure the majority of seniors' sense of touch is just fine but for folks like my dad, they need to be a bit more careful. 👍
@pamelabaker717
@pamelabaker717 Жыл бұрын
This is spot on Phil. I totally agree with you in respect to this thought process. I, myself, have done this very same process with this thought process and it works. Only issue is if you have a water pump instead of city water, the heating elements have to be changed out sooner than later from the limestone corrosion build up. I wish I could go into more details but for the most part, I’ve mainly had outside water pumps and not city water to really compare that to. I hope this helps anyone out there looking for DYI answers.

Do you think the lower element burns out more often because it is used more often, or because it is covered in sediment? I don't think elements really "wear out" much from use unless they are abused.

Hello 👋 good buddy 👍👌👊🤙🤟 Jay. I'm the 99 like. You made me a expert on water heaters..I got bigfoot tombstone in Friday and I got it set Saturday morning it looks incredibly good the picture of him was very good high quality I was so happy it turned out so good I have his grave decorated up with flowers and butterflies I have solar light butterflies and big metal butterflies and all kinds of stuff it looks really good I've spent a lot of time and money into making it look good now I have people coming here just to see his grave he is like a celebrity..he was to me anyway I miss that old fellow more than words I can express.. now I have bad news on Arnold I took him to the vet Friday because his breathing is so fast and she examined him and said that he has a heart murmur and he is in the early stage of heart failure because of his weight she did find some fluids in his abdomen and she said he would have to be on a water pill fouresmide pills the same as bigfoot. I'm trying my best to get him to loose weight but it is easier to say than do. I can't loose Arnold I would be lost. She also put him on some heart meds..I hope it works out for him I just love him so much.take care of yourself buddy 👍 and me and Arnold love you all very very very much my friends 🙏🙌❤️🐕🐕🤙

Aloha David!! Haha thank you for being the 99th like! 😄 From the sound of it, Bigfoot's grave has really become the highlight in your area. That's so cool! I can only imagine the time and effort you put into it.. I'm glad you had the opportunity to channel some of your feelings into that. Really sorry to hear about Arnold though... I sure hope this is something that will get resolved quickly since it sounds like it was caught somewhat early on. And I bet! It must be quite the difficult task to make him lose weight! It's always easier to gain it then to lose it.. I wish you the best, stay healthy yourself as well, may Arnold feel brand new really soon! God bless you guys, it was good to hear from you. I was wondering how things are going for you. Sending sunshine and love from Hawaii! Have a great week! ☀☀🌴🌴🤙🤙

@@WordofAdviceTV thank you very much for your comment and support 🙏 jay you are the best friend I have buddy 👍.. you got that right it's harder to loose it than gain weight.. my Dr had a good sit down with me and she asked me what brand of food I give him and everything I feed him and I thought I was doing good in that department but as I told her she google it and come to find out I was giving him eleven hundred calories a day and not knowing it and he is only allowed seven hundred calories so now Mr Arnold is on a more strict diet.. Yeah I bought enough wrought iron fence to put around bigfoot grave well it's a lot bigger than his grave I mean to say but I will put up some more metal butterflies on the fence when I get it done and just this morning I was contacted by the newspaper writer or whatever they call them lol and she said that she would like to visit and take a picture of his grave and do a write up about bigfoot so here's my chance to tell everyone in the county what a good friend I had in bigfoot I can tell her how he survived cancer for almost three years and how he saved me from the coyote four years ago he will be the hero for sure I wish I had the fence up first but I think I will call her back and tell her to wait for a day or two so I can put up the fence and I'm talking to Arnold as I write you I just told arnold he is going to be in the newspaper also I'm going to have his picture next to bigfoot grave I wish I could send you some pictures of it....I hope you have a wonderful blessed day my friend's 🙏 god bless you all my sincere prayers 🙏

@@WordofAdviceTV This was back in the early 1980s I received my Honorable discharge from the Army. My wife and I moved to Beaumont Texas. I went to work for Bethlehem Steel shipyard. The job was great lasted almost a year and they laid me off and two months later they shut down the Shippyard. They built offshore Oil drilling rigs. I was ok financially so locating my next employer took maybe 2 weeks to find. I went to work for a very good company and with one of the best owners, you could ever ask for. Lyndy Dennis came up just in time for me awesome Company great owner. So I was out helping this service technician we got along great. I was a sponge and wanted to learn all I could. He told me about his Air filter and showed it to me. It was the hand-built aluminum frame. The filter was a series of fishing lines stretched and knotted down at all ends. I can not tell you its airflow and specks. However, to look at this reusable filter was amazing in how these lines interweaved through each other. As you know as the air flowed across these lines within the filter Static is created causing all the dirt dust molecules to stick to it like a magnet. And all you had to do to clean it hose it clean with a water hose. Neat things from the past.

I will say 120* f is to low if you have a 30 gallon electric water heater with a single 3800w element with cold well water. 135*-140*f is best if you are a grown adult and carful. Also apcom thermostats are better than thrmodisc. I broke off the face of a thrmodisc thermostat as it clips to a lip that is the feont face. The thermostat that with the cover was a thrmodisc. The one he was using in the demo with out the hi limit is a APCOM type. It is better. Becose thy hold the wirs more firm. Thy all so have instructions how to take the safety strip off. The safty cover is held on with in a way if you were not care full you would be not likely to brake the thermostat.

My Rheem says 125-130 top and 120 bottom. The problem is the thermostat has widely spaced marks. Totally worthless. They say it was set at the factory. Eyeballing it, they look similar. but with no real marks on the thermostat on where it should be, their engineering sucks. How can you really set it correctly????

Today, My hot water breaker was kicked. When I went to the breaker box I noticed there was a new security tag and meter but I'm not sure when they installed it if it was throughout the day or within the last week or so. Also I'm not sure if this could have kicked the breaker or caused at thermostat or element to go downhill quickly on a fairly old heater. Nonetheless my family has noticed over the past few days that the water seems to be at least 10 to 15° warmer but as of now the water is heating and it is a fair bit hotter than normal. What do you think is most likely the scenario here?
