Where was my Bishop Baron when I was a young man, intent on proving in my arrogance I did not need the Church and its simplistic moraliizing? I have only recently found this shepherd to lead me back to the flock. Hallelujah.

I love this. “Opt out,” of whatever the world says you need (money, fame, excessive pleasure) Bishop Barren tells us. What freedom! John 8:36 tells us, “So if the Son sets you free, you are free indeed.” But to stay free in Christ is to give up that which draws us from Him. Active choice is required. We must choose to “opt out…” of whatever is distracting us from the will of God.

A spiritual gift, this agere contra is clear and helpful way to reverse the bad patterns of our lives. Bishop Barron's explanation is clear, persuasive, eternally memorable. What do you want to get rid of in your behavior? Do the complete opposite, until you can rebound to a spiritually "happy medium." Sound advice that your spiritual life depends on? Thanks, Bishop Bob!

As a student In the late sixties, my peers repeated one big word in their education -- relevance. If Bishop Barron's sermons are anything, they are... relevant. Not necesarily to the narrative themes inflicted upon us by today's media, peers or even the liberal churches I used to attend. HIs theme seems to me as relevant today as in the time of Ignatius. I pray and hope I can practice detachment often enough as a sinner to actively seat myself at table 135. Thank you again, Bishop Barron. I look forward to your sermon every Sunday.

The sermon could be confusing to some who could interpret the message as "not to aim high" or to have 'no worldly desires' at all. I think the message is about being detached from the desire to seek more all the time. This occasional detachment helps us to stay grounded and humble, which is important to prevent addiction and refrain from being too full of ourselves. This practice helps us to be in the mindset of 'in service of others' rather than 'serve for oneself' and to practice moderation. I believe 'Agere contra' is about finding balance in our lives.
@TheTruthisWritteninyourHeart2 жыл бұрын
How do you (the I) aim high yet be in service to others? We can’t serve two masters we know what doesn’t feel right and how we chase after things, people, feelings, distractions worldly positions and they inevitably lead to emptiness stopping and setting aside and emptying out let’s the peace of God in and the world can’t provide that. I get so attached even though I know this it’s like insanity advanced insanity. Insanity is doing the same thing over and over expecting a different result and advanced insanity is doing it knowing exactly what the result would be. Chasing worldly things just makes me miserable I spend some time with my 2 1/2 year old granddaughter playing at putting sticky pieces of paper on our faces and on her dolls it cost nothing but we were both filled with wonder and joy and the world can’t give me that. There was a time when I’d be too busy with work, money, power and ego and I’d of missed that I’ve got so far to go but I want to live less in my old ways and embrace ways that reveals Gods will for me. Today was to learn from my granddaughter and to cherish simplicity and joy and partake in just being right there in the moment living, loving and giving and being loved. 🌸🙏

To desire anything other than balance, especially in the face of temptation, I think is to desire to remain a child. Gravitating to extremes, either addiction or detachment, will only lead to another pendulum swing, another cycle. What parent would want their children to never grow up? Here's an alternative suggestion: make your enjoyments a reward, that you only receive after doing what needs to be done. Then, only consume in moderation, so you don't become addicted, it has to be proportional to work done. In that way, you can turn an enjoyment into a virtue, and be happy with what you've earned.

« Seeking the company of the glitterati » may not be the addiction. Addictions are found in the answer to the question «what am I after from being in the company of the glitterati?». For an important period of my life, the glitterati for me were priests. Yet, I was far from being addicted to priesthood. What I was addicted to was what I hoped being a member of the glitterati would give me. In my case, « being desired». Dare revealing to yourself and admitting to God what you are angling for, and you will find your addiction, a big step to true freedom. Levis Shalom

I remember years ago watching on some popular tv channel a documentary about a man in America who was living somewhere in woods in wilderness. I can't remember in wich American state in was. Before that he had a classic" American dearm life" :wife, house, cars, big income etc....and at one point he realised he was the prisoner of his own life style. So he abandoned it all, and went to live in a forest with almost nothing, he was hunting animals to eat, living in a small cottage etc....His family of course denied him completely because of that, and everyone though he was crazy and a freak. But during that interview for tv, he sounded totaly sane to me, actually more sane and normal than many of us who are in the "normal world". He was not a Christian or a religious person if I remember correctly. But he intuitively felt that he needed "to run for his life" out of the grips of money and prestige chasing. " To do against" as so rightly put.... that is it.

A priest friend of mine once said he would never share a parable (of his own) in a homily because they are too prone to misinterpretation. He said he had heard too many homilies where the preacher's fictional story was simply a trope, self-serving, or the repetition of urban legend. I think the "table one" metaphor, though interesting and humorous, fits into that category. Preachers need to hew to known or demonstrable information, otherwise they diminish the effectiveness of their messaging. Leave the parables to Jesus.
