My grandmother was in the reformed church. She married my grandfather, a Catholic. There was probably a minor uproar. That’s probably the most subtle of religious vignettes in my family tree. The common religious thread - between Prots and Caths - is that each branch of one flavor came to the US to escape the beleaguerment imposed by the other flavor in Europe. I was a cradle Catholic who returned to God after 40-years as an atheist via the _Methodists!_ (My final changeover was similar to the incredible experience reported by St Augustine.) Now I’m kinduva Methodist-Catholic. (Really leaning RC but fully appreciative of what the Methodists (in the early days, Wesley, etc) have done for Christianity. Anyway, don’t let the _“you’re not a proper Christian until you’re RC”_ remarks dissuade you. Remain on the path of our Lord. Keep learning, keep discerning. Best! ☦️🙏✝️

Brother Lawrence was a Franciscan monk who worked in the kitchens of the monastery he was attached to. He hated it, but he stuck to the arduous work. As an old man, he suffered greatly with arthritis, and was given the job of mending the other monk's sandals. When he became too weak to work, he was bedridden until his death. He asked to be laid on the side with most pain, to be like his Savior and Lord. Great man.

This is incredible, since watching this I want to train to be a Jesuit, yet I am not even Catholic. I could not believe my ears when you said Ignatius went into a cave and let himself go to overcome his vain character. I too am a soldier who has been incredibly fit and active but find that the motivation for that comes at the detriment of my spirituality, so I have let myself go waiting for a different spiritual motivation to be active. Weird but I feel the same in a small way as Ignatius. I am far from perfect and a sinner, I need God to help me. Becoming a Brother seems impossible yet the thought of it fills me with an exploding feeling of potential.

Wonderful. At Mass this morning, just after receiving the Holy Eucharist, kneeling in prayer, I found myself looking up and around at all the members of our parish and I was gradually aware of a deep sense of God’s love for me, of well-being and gratitude for all these people in our little parish whom I love so much. What was most remarkable about those few minutes was an awareness of the great and simple joy in following Jesus. In the possibility of choosing to live in his way, not mine. I recall thinking nothing profound, but rather, this is such fun. Being close to you God, is so…fun. The word felt inadequate, so I asked him if that was ok to describe the moment of closeness with him as fun. It was ok. I struggle with material possessions-having too much stuff. I recently decided to give it up and am donating bags of things, mostly clothes , to our parish rummage sale. So freeing. It made me immensely happy to hear Bishop Barron say that choosing the lowest place, sitting with the lesser individuals was more fun. Confirming that I am moving in the right direction. Oh happy fault!

When people don't follow the "Word of God", they are open to following the "word of culture" and become dependent on culture trends and government policy.
@ancientfiction52442 жыл бұрын
If anyone thinks the Bible is the "word of God" and not ancient authors speaking for their imaginary god, they need to read the below article from a critical Biblical scholar and spend some time reading the other articles on his website. Basically the Bible is Israelite propaganda. "So for example, when we read carefully what Yahweh says in the book of Leviticus, namely that the Aaronids (the sons of Aaron only), are high priests contrary to the Levites, that they alone are Yahweh’s mediators and the Levites are reduced to mere ministers of the Aaronids, that only through sacrifice can one atone for sins and not confession as preached by the Levites, or more precisely the Levite’s Yahweh, etc., *it can be no coincidence that in these laws and commandments,* ***which are placed on the mouth of Yahweh,*** *that Yahweh himself is presented advocating and legitimating the very views and beliefs of the specific priestly guild writing the text, and, contrary to the views and beliefs of their rivals, the Levites and the Levite’s Yahweh!* We will examine this more closely when we get to the contradictions in these books. But in short, this was the function of ancient literature, and we are allowing these ancient texts to speak for themselves. *In this particular case, the Levites and Aaronids wrote specific texts that each advocated their religious beliefs, views, and their position as high priests* ***by writing these sentiments directly into the mouth of their god!*** But just studying the Bible alone, scientifically, affords us the occasion *to see that many of these so-called words of Yahweh are* ***actually the very words of the texts’ authors.*** When we see numerous texts employing this ancient literary technique, and moreover, ***presenting Yahweh as the spokesperson for their own views and agenda,*** *and* ***contrary*** *to Yahweh’s other words in other texts written by other authors employing the same technique,* how can one conclude otherwise. In other words, when in the composite text that we now call the Bible we find: Yahweh declaring that only Aaronids can officiate as his priests and Yahweh declaring that all Levites can officiate as high priest; Yahweh declaring that sin is atoned through confession and Yahweh declaring that sin is only expiated through the sacrificial cult, no exceptions; Yahweh declaring that he gave laws and commandments at Sinai and Yahweh declaring that he only gave the Ten Commandments at Sinai; Yahweh commanding to exterminate all the Canaanites without pity and Yahweh declaring to tolerate them and live in their midst; Yahweh declaring that the wilderness generation were disloyal and rebellious and Yahweh declaring that they were a paradigm of loyalty and faith; Yahweh declaring that he may be offered sacrifices at any altar and Yahweh declaring that there is only one altar where sacrifices are to be offered up; Yahweh declaring that the people saw him at Sinai and Yahweh declaring that they only heard his voice; Yahweh declaring that circumcision is an eternal covenant and keeping the land depends on observing this very commandment and Yahweh declaring the Mosaic laws as the covenant and keeping the land is dependent on keeping these laws; Yahweh declaring that he dwells in the midst of the people and Yahweh declaring that he only resides in heaven; Yahweh commanding Passover to be celebrated by all at Jerusalem and Yahweh commanding it to be celebrated at each person’s home; Yahweh commanding that animals for consumption must be ritually sacrificed and Yahweh commanding that they don’t have to be sacrificed ritually, etc. ***one must conclude that Yahweh is being used by these authors, each with their own contrary views and beliefs as a spokesperson for each of these authors’ agendas.*** These are all the personal, and competing, views, theological beliefs, and religious systems of our biblical authors. And this is only the tip of the iceberg." *"Studying the Bible"* - Dr Steven DiMattei *"Contradictions in the Bible | Identified verse by verse and explained using the most up-to-date scholarly information about the Bible, its texts, and the men who wrote them"* -- by Dr. Steven DiMattei

@@ancientfiction5244 I like people who criticize the biblical literary words of the old and new testament and emphasize contradictions in the Bible. But I guess, it would be more intellectually persuasive if these critics tried in practice the spiritual exercises of the Catholic saints literally following the Christ literature and see the difference, if indeed this whole biblical Christ is nothing but Jewish propaganda and mere mythical write ups of the ancient authors and rewrite as words of mythical God.

What a joy to be underestimated. To stay a secret only God knows. A hidden treasure. To not seek but give. To be In the back, the last row in the corner and even then give your seat away and stand up. Because wherever we are Jesus is sitting with me and no joy is higher, no place better. Lord, make me an instrument of your peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; and where there is sadness, joy. O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be understood as to understand; to be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive; it is in pardoning that we are pardoned; and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen. -St. Francis of Assisi

I love this. “Opt out,” of whatever the world says you need (money, fame, excessive pleasure) Bishop Barren tells us. What freedom! John 8:36 tells us, “So if the Son sets you free, you are free indeed.” But to stay free in Christ is to give up that which draws us from Him. Active choice is required. We must choose to “opt out…” of whatever is distracting us from the will of God.

I lost my job over declining the vaccine. LIKE MANY OTHERS! I declined due to my pre existing health conditions lupus and heart disease. I’ve been struggling to provide for myself and my children since losing my job from Forsyth hospital. I’m now waitressing, and I’m thankful, but I’m not making nearly enough to get by. Every month is a battle to not end up on the streets with my two children. I’m constantly in fear of losing my home. To even think about being on the streets with two young children is terrifying. But even as I face homelessness seemingly every month. I have faith, God will provide. With GOD ALL THINGS ARE POSSIBLE! Faith over fear.

THE FLOOR WAS SWEEPED UNDER MY FEET, THEN THE SKY, THEN THE WALLS, THEN TIME ITSELF. To use drugs as refuge NEVER should be called to have an addiction. There are couple of things cited Bishop Barron’s homily that have been on my mind for some time. I’m a songwriter, musician and singer. I have an album that is almost complete, but the producer has been incredibly slow at times. I reached a point in my frustration where I had to let it go. As a student In the late sixties, my peers repeated one big word in their education -- relevance. If Bishop Barron's sermons are anything, they are... relevant. Not necesarily to the narrative themes inflicted upon us by today's media, peers or even the liberal churches I used to attend. HIs theme seems to me as relevant today as in the time of Ignatius. I pray and hope I can practice detachment often enough as a sinner to actively seat myself at table 135. Thank you again, Bishop Barron. I look forward to your sermon every Sunday.

Like Francis of Assisi he was full of himself and whatever else he could fit in to "be somebody" This homily is so powerful because it is given by Bishop Barron, an authentic man, a holy man, a normal man (ii.e., "we sinners). It is a timely challenge for me - for my life. I have already sent this message out to 15 other leaders who will be meeting in 2 weeks to start to plan a reset in a key diocesan ministry. I sent it to them because of how this message imapacted me, and hope that each of them will receive it as needed. --- "All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble. Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time." 1 Pet 5: 5b-6 --- My job is to "go down", detach! Then God in His timing will lift me up. Heavenly Father, help me to grow in that direction today and every day...to embrace humility and so find the fullness of You!. Thank you for Bishop Barron and the Word on Fire team - serving you, your people and the world by proclaiming and demonstrating -- the Truth.

Bishop, I thank God that He led me to you. I have been posting and writing and I have come to realize I am preaching to the Choir. Yes, everyone, the bishop is right and he is hated because he is an ambassador of Christ.

The constant quench of worldly stuff that gives us temporary pleasure is indeed drawing us farther from our Dear Creator & seems never ending! Thank you so much Bishop Barron for this profound & deep reflection, praying for you & all the clergies, seminarians & bishops all over the world. I've come to realize that I have no possessions but every material thing I have possesses me because they interfere with our relationship, God and I thus man and I. I must view all I have as a blessing from God and ever be grateful. You see God no more wants us to part with our belongings no more than to pluck out our eye or cut off a limb but to realize everything we have is a blessing from God. We have much to be thankful for always and everywhere and most of all is life eternal whether it be in heaven or hell according to His righteous judgment.

It has been well said that a "boor is someone who insists on talking about himself when you wish to talk about yourself." God desires us to get us out of ourselves in part so we can experience the liberty to appreciate His creation and all those who He brings into our lives. We are finally free to experience the great banquet the Lord has prepared for each of us.
