We did that. We traded 18 months of 80+ hour weeks with 5 kids ages (about) 4-14. You know what came if it? Teenagers paying cash for their own cars, vacations we could only dream of, and SO much less stressed parents. We can be so much more present and mentally with them now. They were our cheerleaders, they rallied and supported us. They ate beans and rice, and we have changed our family tree!

I'm 14 months deep into working 80 hours a week. Work 12hrs a day with every other monday off. First 12 months was to pay off debt, next 12 months is to pay for college in cash. I feel for this guy, the mental struggle of continuing for so long is tough. But if I want to go to college anytime soon, this is the only way, so you just have to pick your battles. Delay your goals for sanity or change your lifestyle as much as possible to keep going as long as you can. Hope I can continue another 10 months, and to everyone out there doing the same, we got this 🙏 Update: I finished 19 months straight of 80 hours a week and my hours got cut, however, I'm happy to report that I will still have the money to pay for my entire degree in cash before the school year starts in fall. It can be done people, hard work pays off 🥳🎉

I’ve worked like that before - I remember my mother called me once in a Saturday (at work) to ask what I was doing that weekend. I was so mentally exhausted and zoned in on work that I hadn’t even realized what day of the week it was - the last time I’d noted the day was the Tuesday. That when I realized I had to slow down - if you’re in debt for an extra year or two but it lets you slow down it’d be well worth it. Your relationships are worth more than money. Maybe doing that for 6 months to get out of the worst of a hole is fine - but much more than that is dangerous (and real fatigue like that with a 2 hr/day commute like this caller described is dangerous).

Agreed. It's that balance in life like on all other aspects. Adjust accordingly where possible. Don't watch one minute of TV or Facebook, etc. When you are not working, be it 40, 50, 60, hours a week, you need to be doing the basics.....eating, sleeping, resting, playing with your kids, reading with them, time with your spouse, fixing a leaky faucet. You get the picture. Once you have maxed our where to save time, then maybe cut some hours off work from say 70 to 60. Just try it. It's easier said than done, but you have to do something and be very disciplined about it.

I worked 60/week for a year straight out of college (and did fulltime school and fulltime work at the same time). To say I was burned out would be an amazing understatement. It isn’t a long term solution to financial problems. It is bad for the body and the mind. Now that I make better money I had decided that taking an extra year to pay off debt is better for me than continuing to burn myself out and neglecting myself

I remember doing 70 something hour weeks, very repetative job and managed to work 40 days in a row. No interactions outside the job, I have an interest in a broad range of subjects, but my mind was so habitualised my brain couldn't find something different to think about or talk about even on a break. Stop listening to these people that wouldn’t do what you do, have gone through what you have or do the type of work you do. Take care of yourself first and foremost and just do what you can. Stop making bills you can’t pay. Start fresh and pay what you can when you can. Stop letting these weirdos tell you how you should pay your bills. They’ll send you straight to the morgue.

I worked 80-83 hours a week for 13 weeks in a row. 8am to 9/9:30 Monday though Saturday. It was tough, but I could do it, because I was very strict about sleeping 11pm-6am so I got 7 hours of sleep each night. And I did not work Sundays. So I had a full day each week to rest and recover. And again, it was only for 3 months so I knew I could do it for that short span of time.

Jobs pay hardly anything, part time jobs are difficult because of the overlap with your main job and pay barely anything. People make stupid decisions I get that but the system is so stacked against people more than it ever has. So the "get a job and get out of debt" isn't as simple as he thinks.

They should have told him to back off. If he is legitimately working 16 hours, that's not healthy. Assuming two half hour breaks for food, that's 17 hours at work. Plus he said an hour commute, and say 30 minutes to shower, brush teeth, get dressed, and pack breaskfast/lunch/dinner. That leaves 5.5 hours for sleep. I think seven 12-hour days should be the max for one person. Unless he can alternate between 8 and 12 hour days.

It is ridiculous to do this whether you do it for 6 months or 6 years. I've been a trucker for 30 years, 12-15hr days. It ruins your relationship, your family life especially when you have kids, it ruins your mental and physical health, it ruins your social life. In the short term, sleep deprivation increases cortisol levels, causes increased blood pressure, decreases glucose tolerance, and increases the activity of the body’s fight-or-flight system, all of which are linked to increased risk of diabetes, heart attacks, and strokes. Daytime cognitive performance is also reduced, resulting in more accidents. And if you think "it's only short term, what harm can it do?" Well it is killing you. It's costing you 10 minutes of your life expectancy every single day you do this, getting less than 6hrs good sleep a day. Absolutely not worth it.

Something tells me there was a lot more going on in your life than working a mere 3 extra hours per day. If so, I'm not sure how much of it you can blame on the Baby Steps and being gazelle intense. There is a certain level of knowing yourself and using common sense in your approach to working. You still need to communicate with your spouse, you still need to eat well and exercise, you still need to see a mental health professional for counseling or med management, you still need to take a step back when you feel yourself becoming overwhelmed. While I can sympathize with the guy's concern, it sounds like he's just making excuses to getting out of debt.

Currently my job is a sinking ship and everyone in my job is feeling the same as I’ve been feeling burnt out, fatigued, while we’re lacking leadership. The boss is being reactive rather than proactive and higher ups always seems like a deer staring at an incoming headlights when we come across situations so it caused all of us to overwork and rack up a huge amount of OT. The extra 40k you make working 80 hours a week may even be enough for the heart surgery you're gonna need when the stress puts you in the hospital! Boy the ramsay team really do think things thru. Wanna know how to make wages really go up? Outlaw working more than 40 hours a week. Intentionally create a labor shortage, which will drive wages up precipitously. These people love when you work like a slave because it means the total hours of available hours in the labor market is higher, lowering the per hour price, even after taking overtime pay into account. Paying a $20/hr employee $30/hr occasionally to stretch the labor available is cheaper than if this wasn't allowed and it required more people at a higher price, given their better negotiating position.
