The length and energy of a bond are influenced by both the bond order and the size of the atoms in the bond. In general, the higher the bond order and the smaller the atoms, the shorter and stronger the bond. As shown in this video, we can use these relationships to match diatomic molecules to their potential energy curves. View more lessons or practice this subject at www.khanacademy.org/science/a...
Khan Academy is a nonprofit organization with the mission of providing a free, world-class education for anyone, anywhere. We offer quizzes, questions, instructional videos, and articles on a range of academic subjects, including math, biology, chemistry, physics, history, economics, finance, grammar, preschool learning, and more. We provide teachers with tools and data so they can help their students develop the skills, habits, and mindsets for success in school and beyond. This video was great. Shined alot of light on the subject. Thank you very much! Should add spectrometer and chromatography to the tag. Wish I had this video years ago. lol

Doesn't the concept of radius conflicting with the illustration of graph?

Great video but the end confused me....According to increasing radii, the atoms rank : H, O, N So according to bond order AND radii of these atoms, wouldn't the trends BOTH match the bond energy? You said according to radii of atoms that you might suspect the salmon colored line to be Oxygen....Wouldn't O would be purple according to radii as well because its the second largest atom and purple line has second largest bond energy?

No because O is smaller than N because it has a higher nuclear charge

greater bond energy eg: triple bond would mean lower potential energy You've written the vertical axis as potential energy yet explain it as bond energy .. it doesn't quite make sense to me?
