Congratulations on possibly your greatest career decision. You will never regret it. Years ago there was a senior manager in the company being given a tour of the call centre & i will never forget what the HR Manager said to him about the call centre staff. She said "Look at them there like little monkeys chained to a phone & computer. We pay them peanuts & they still come back. If anyone is unhappy we can replace them almost immediately." I will never forget that.

Working at a call center is exactly like and abusive relationship, always have to say sorry for things you did not do, threatened all the time, no support system, gaslighting customers. Constantly afraid of getting in trouble. Spot on about it being dehumanizing, we are not allowed to be a person, constantly demeaned degraded, shouted at, asked what is the point of you, being cursed at and called names.

I remember being such a happy person before a call center job but my job has made me absolutely careless about the customers and their issues that have become my fault suddenly. I get verbally attacked and when they ask to speak to a supervisor, my supervisor tells me to tell them that they’re on “another call” all so that they don’t have to take the abuse while they continue to make salary. I would NEVER EVER wish this on anyone. When I worked in food, they pay sucked, it got busy, but I was with other co-workers and we felt like we were all in it together. Working at a call center is like working in hell.

Ever since I started my job at a call center, I started having panic attacks. Now, even when I’m not at work I have panic attacks randomly now. Sure, I make decent money, but I traded my soul for it and will now have to go through therapy to get over my panic attacks. In addition, I started hating everything and everyone, it was awful. Youre right, that combination of monotonous routine and the stress. It feels like youre a corporate robot taking rants of the customers and frontlining for the company's failures. It really builds up emotional turmoil inside of me. That anxiety and pressure everytime youre in your work shift. *sigh I see myself quitting soon now. I really understand how you feel, I worked in a call center for almost 2 years as a collections agent (which to me is the worst department you can be in) me personally I'm a very shy person and I don't talk much so this job was hard for me from the beginning having to call people to ask why they haven't made their car payment and basically begging them to make a payment everyday was so depressing for me not to mention the angry customers you sometimes get on the line make it 1000 times worse, I literally use to go on break which was only 15 mins on an 8 hour shift and cry my eyes out because I hated it so much and where I live is hard to find a job so I basically felt stuck in the place also having to deal with staff who just aren't good people is the icing on the cake, I finally resigned last year in December and I remember walking out of the building and never looking back since then (I got a new job btw which I'm very happy at now) but that job gave me severe anxiety and depression so I understand how you feel.

I just got fired from one. At the beginning, I thought since it was work from home then it was going to be somewhat manageable. Dead wrong. the Client makes sure they micromanage and track you to the second with an attendance tracker. They also monitor not only your calls but your monitor seeing what you click on in real time. It was very dehumanizing and my managers never cared and instead put on this fake passive aggressive tone. The customers were some of the most rude hostile individuals I have ever faced and after hanging up on quite a few of them, they found out and fired me. they did me a favor there.

Oh yeah. I’m sick of people promoting work from home which isn’t a problem IF, keyword “IF” it’s a good position/company that don’t have miscommunication/micromanage. That’s it! But call center is a dumpster garbage job rather in person or work from home. It’s horrible bringing that mess into your home with all that toxicity. It’s a toxic job with alot of emotional abuse. A lot people who get stuck working from home inside their home “taking calls” are in earthly hell. The management are horrible, I experienced this to working from home through a call center, i hung up in my supervisor face through Microsoft Teams than resigned because they were micromanaging me to much. I did my job along with the 8 week training of nonsense that don’t truly prepare you to answers those goofy calls. Told them to give me the address to resend this garbage equipment out my home. I had jobs lined up and interviews also got hired by two jobs the same day I told him to F-off. You escaped hell.

The people were 99% nice and calm because they were receiving free benefits. @@strygwyr5735 It's soul desroying & towards the end i was on the edge of a nervous breakdown & working 40 hours a week with unpaid shift work extras. The thing with call centre work is that there is no real opportunity for a career. If you are working in a call centre on the phones & you are successful at it meeting your KPI's etc. the last thing they are going to do is promote you as you are too valuable to the company just making or taking calls. Sure you might be given a free movie ticket every now or then but you can't pay your rent with movie tickets. I am in no position to tell people what jobs they should or should not do but if you are in a call centre & ae genuinely unhappy then i can tell you it ain't going to get better. The really frustating thing is that most call centre managers have not spent 1 day in a call centre & simply don't have a clue what they are doing.

Just think about this, we are being paid $400 per month which in itself is already ridiculous.. however the career path is open for a promotion. Probably because those people who are just slightly above us are still having their own struggles and issue so they still leave the company. That said, someone from our level has to move up and take their place. There are instances when i was under training that the person coaching us is telling things about his salary and the environment that is hard to swallow. I had workmates who had their anxiety problems enhanced because of the way in which calls just pop out of nowhere. You just sit there waiting until a loud beep sounds. Then, you get shouted by a person whose problem was not fixed by the last 5 agents and then you must sell them something to keep your job. It was too much pressure for me, so I decided to quit. I worked at two call centers. You have to be a specific type of person to make it. In particular, you’d need to be able to work unaffected by anger, complaints, and negativity from callers. It wore on me constantly and intruded into my thoughts after work. I dreaded thinking about how I’d have to white knuckle it again the next day. Quitting was the best choice and thankfully I switched my career track and got the best job in my life after I left.

I just wanted to say thank you for taking the time to film this and sharing your honest experience. I'm actually about to go through an interview soon next week for a call customer position as well for an international finance firm and I wanted to know more about it from people who have experience almost the same job position just so I can get a better idea of what its truly like to work as a call rep. This was very insightful and I'm already leaning towards I don't want to take on this job, but I thought I'd do some research to prepare myself for everything and still give the interview a shot to see how everything goes just so I can be 100% sure with my decision. Again, thank you!

I used to work in a call center environment for over 15 tears and I am still scratching my head to why I did it. I did have a time of 6 years inside this 15 year period where I worked on the sales team and I loved it. And then they folded the team due to budgeting reasons. After my health collapsed and I had to have a few surgeries. One of them was open heart surgery, I was on leave from work for over two years. As of June 1st this nightmare is finally over. I have been working on my own businesses since 2015, with no to no success yet. I am currently with a team of people who are entrepreneurs and they are encouraging me and coaching me on how to be successful in my own business. Thank you for sharing your story with us.

I used to work for Direct TV call center. It sucked so bad. The people were so mean on the phone and I know what you mean by “being in after call” it’s terrible how they had someone on the the walky calling us out. I used to hang up my phone because I couldn’t stand back to back calls. They gave me a better position but it still sucked so I ended up quitting and left them with out giving my 2 weeks notice. The customers were such jerks!! After getting off the phone with one jack ass you would be on another call with then next idiot telling you how to do your job and cussing you out. I couldn’t take it anymore so I used to hang up on them. What would suck even more was when Att decided to take away all the discounts and make us take all the abuse from customers. So I definitely understand what you mean it’s the worst job!

The call center job that i had was for tech support. We helped old people find the power button on the computer, etc. It was so relaxed. Sometimes it would be back to back then other times there would be 5 - 15 min between each call, so i had plenty of time to talk with the people around me. They also let you choose your own schedules after training. the call centers you wanna avoid is banks, irs, collections, fraud department.

As someone who first worked in a garden center and then a call center, i much prefer the call center. It can be a bit boring waiting for calls, but Canadians are really great when it comes to being polite with agents, and rarely is it that people get pissed off. It really depends on what kind of company is contracting you though, the one i'm in is a nice place where there's lots of little events like bake sales and BBQs happening all the time, and all the managers are really great, so for me it's been a great experience, though i am transferring to another contract (one with facebook!) soon.

I chose to work at a call center and gave it a shot coz I would get accepted with long hair and tattoos. But the longer I stayed and worked there my Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and my Anxiety went through the roof in the workplace and also at home. I quit Nov 30th at a previous call center that I worked at, because I wasn't able to reach the quota. I then run into an ad on Facebook where another call center was hiring, they provided a good offer and I needed some money at the time just to pay my bills, so I applied. They accepted me for the job and I thank them and Jesus for that. I just started working this week at that call center. Weirdest shift ever, 5 fucking AM in the morning is the time that my shift starts and they won't allow me to pick or change my schedule to a night shift. Because I was expecting that they'd put me on night shift like any regular call center. I lived an hour away, so I had to get up like 3 30 AM or 4 in the morning for this sheee. The lights in the training room, were enough to burn your scalp and blind your eyes. The lights in that call center were so hot that it could probly fry a hotdog. The training facility was just unclean and too much bright lights and the Air conditioning was Non Stop cold in the training Area. I just quit. I pick my health over a job that I don't like. I'd rather do something I like. Rather than work for a good pay but is close to going insane.

Are call centres the greatest jobs in the world? No. But they provide work and a decent living wage for people. People that have kids and families. Sicknesses, and debts. Another young person who thinks living strictly for themselves is where happiness comes from. I'm sure that bank is equally happy they wasted a "few weeks" investing in training you just to leave after a month. If a call centre gives you anxiety then how would you cope with a management position? I guess we should ship more call centre jobs over seas. May I ask, if you could not handle a call centre job, as a person with very little work experience, where do you hope to work next? I worked jobs a million times worse than this girl. I use that experience to this day to work for myself.
