The Woodland Escape

3 жыл бұрын

Peter takes his birch bark canoe for its first paddle of the spring.
He tries to take the spring out of his new door, so that it closes properly and discusses his primitive door latch. He discusses cob, used as chinking material by the pioneers and explains that he will be using mortar for the chinking of his cabin. He installs the first window and the window stops.
He begins the chinking, rough coats on the inside and outside. He made a draft control for the rumford fireplace and forged the head to look like a moose. He then begins work on the fascia.

I'm going back and catching up on your earlier videos as I find time. I don't blame you for cheating with the chinking! I have often stood inside the "Homeplace" houses (there's a double-pen with separate kitchen and a single-pen) and thought of their winter conditions (and the wasps during Southern summers)... Last I recall, there was still leaded glass in some of their windows even. I will be cheating with insulation if ever I tackle such a project, I must admit. lol As always, thanks for sharing these different projects. Well done!

Putting it on the outside saved chiseling out a recess in the door frame. Also it would not be a locked door regardless as the dowel opens from either side. Pleased to see some folks look at the smaller details Duane.

Very nice work overall that I see in the video but it is unfortunate that a modern dolomitic concrete mortar was utilizedrather rather than the proper and traditional pointing/cobbing blends of clay, lime, and fiber (actually from manure most commonly in practice)..."Chinking" (better-called nogging in English) is actually stone or wood shards placed in the space between the logs (or between timbers in other forms of folk architecture) which you seem to have opted for wire which can lead to oxidation jacking over time and other challenges...Too many (such as McRaven and "This Old House") started the nonsense of clay/lime blends are low in durability, which they are not at all and whenever I ask those that think it is how often they have used it or know how to properly blend it the answer is always no...they don't know how nor have ever used it... Modern concretes can lead to all forms of interstitial moisture build-up because of the nature of the material. It was never intended for such work and more "made to work" rather than being appropriate for the job. In mandate historic restoration these materials are simply not allowed because of the damage over time they can cause and the failure to meet the "like for like...in means, methods and materials applications," ethos requires in such vernacular restoration... I look forward to reviewing more of your videos as the quality of the work and attention to detail are excellent...Thanks for sharing what you're trying to do...
