Can people stop commenting about their physiques? They are distance runners, they could absolutely smash all of you “fit” guys in a distance run. They are made for endurance, they need to be light. I looked like them as a good distance runner, now I’m a sprinter I have a bit more muscle and don’t look so skinny. It’s about specificity.

I was a Longhorn and I ran XC for Texas like 40 years ago! And I'm still running now--well, 80 minutes a day on an elliptical, and then I usually get in a 10 miler in the woods on the week-end only (otherwise I just get hurt--I've been running since 1970). I like the vibe they have there. I remember this coach when he was at Auburn. Texas's coach back in the day was a big hulking guy--nothing like Coach Watson. It was fun to see this video. I wish our environment then would have been more like their environment now. Nice facilities. And, of course, Austin is by far the best city in Texas. Hook 'em!

Austin is an horrendously overrated, unfriendly, suburban shithole of a town and it is horrible for running because it is so damned hot and humid. I dont miss living in that miserable, ugly town and have no desire of ever returning for a visit.

Texas is a shithole of a state, but Austin is among the top 10 most vibrant cities in America, especially for music. The University of Texas had pluses and minuses. The worst part of the state of Texas is that it's filled with Texans (and most Texas are completely unaware of how limited they are in their thinking). It it wasn't totally miserable, although I would choose a different school if I was deciding today. I learned a lot from the time I spent there. C'est la vie.

I need some advice for running distance. What mindset do you runners have as you are running? The little voice in my head gets to me every time and it isn’t as simple as “shutting it up” or “keep on running.” There’s something that runners do that focuses their brain on something else rather than their thoughts. Can someone who has had experience with change such as this, what did you do?

Or they simply don't have natural aerobic engines, and have other strengths. I know for sure Sam Worley is a middle distance runner training up (1:48 and 3:58 as a freshman), John Rice is a steepler which isn't super aerobic (though tbf he did run 13:52), Alex Rogers is a middle distance runner/steepler, Charles Mills is just as good at 5k but he mainly runs 1500/mile in track...see the pattern? My PBs are 2:56 for 1k, 5:20 for 1 mile, 17:49 for 5k. I'm quite heavy for a runner (nearly 85kgs) but I'm pretty fit but nowhere near as quick as these guys, because they're doing their tempo faster than my PBs. What I'm struggling with is the apparent effort though - they look very relaxed, which makes sense, but their cadence doesn't even look that high. When I do my 1k PB, my cadence is 180+ spm, and I feel like I 'look' like I'm going faster than these guys (Obviously I'm not!) and putting a lot more effort in (which I probably am). So where is the extra pace coming from? I'm 6 feet tall, so my stride length should be okay - are these guys getting more pace from pushing off from the ground? The backlift of the foot towards the bum? Just trying to work out how I can go quicker! Thanks

running smooth takes time and so does having the endurance to run at faster paces for a period of time consistency is everything
@prodmrn04
@prodmrn04 2 жыл бұрын
Their legs are stronger and their bodies weigh much less than yours, so basically each stride from them covers more distance as they can carry the weight more efficiently, that's also why they are running more relaxed than you (other than the fact that they've been running their whole life). You'd probably be faster in the sprints tho
@saccerzd
@saccerzd 2 жыл бұрын
@@prodmrn04 thanks. so they're probably doing longer strides than I am. I'm definitely not a sprinter though... my friend beats me easily over 100/200/400m, but anything over that I beat him.
@chanelmuir9330
@chanelmuir9330 2 жыл бұрын
@@saccerzd The biggest difference will be how fit they are. Their bodies are much more efficient at using oxygen. Just keep training consistently and fitness will come. Losing weight could definitely help, but you're not too heavy. I'm 6'1 and 75kg and I have no problems with weight.
@saccerzd
@saccerzd 2 жыл бұрын
@@chanelmuir9330 Thanks. I understand all that, but the bit I'm struggling to work out is how I am doing 180spm with a good stride length, but running slower than them. Speed is a function of (step length) x (cadence), so if my cadence is the same as theirs, the only explanation can be that my stride length is shorter. I guess that's what I need to improve.
