Workplace Violence Prevention: Verbal De-Escalation

Objectives:
1. Review risk factors and triggers for workplace conflict.
2. Review effective communication strategies for verbal de-escalation.
Scott Goldstein currently serves as Director, Masada Healthcare Consulting specializing in Workplace Violence Prevention, Verbal De-Escalation and Healthcare Specific Self-Defense. He recently served as Captain of Station 32, Pikesville Volunteer Fire Company in Baltimore County. With 38 years of experience in the fire service, he is an Instructor/ Instructor Evaluator for the Maryland Fire & Rescue Institute at University of Maryland, MIEMSS Services EMTB Evaluator, American Heart Association BLS Regional Faculty, and Director of Training, Emergency Volunteer Project. He holds numerous certifications including Fire Officer IV, Fire Service Instructor III, Fire Investigator I, Fire Inspector I, Firefighter III, Public Fire & Life Safety Educator II, Health & Safety Officer, Incident Safety Officer - EMS Operations, Fire Suppression, and TECC.
Coos Hamburger is a paramedic and life member of Chestnut Ridge Volunteer Fire Company. He has been an ALS provider since the early 1980’s and has served as both ALS mentor and instructor in various capacities over his decades with the volunteer fire service. He is a trained mediator specializing in alternative dispute resolution, conflict management and crisis negotiation. Coos has a lifelong interest in public health and emergency medicine and is a graduate of Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore and certificated from the Centre for Research on the Epidemiology of Disasters (CRED) at the School of Public Health, Université Catholique de Louvain, in Brussels. He is the author of The Two Faces of Richard, documenting the most extensive face transplant in history and is currently working on an independent, long term project on trauma at the University of Maryland R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center. Coos teaches part time for Masada Healthcare as an instructor in workplace violence prevention and verbal de-escalation at the Medstar Health System.
