This 300Tdi was causing me a few headaches.
Although it was now starting - would it do the same when my customer gets his vehicle back?
Time to investigate!

I had a military diesel N/A years ago.. it had a glass bowl on top of the lift pump, don't know if this was military only but it sure made it easy to spot dirty fuel and fuel draining back..

And don't forget - you could buy a kit to rebuild the pump! Mike

That's right- you could get parts to rebuild water pumps, starters and alternators - now you have to buy the units as there are no part numbers for individual parts any more. Mike

the one way valves in the fuel lift pump rarely seal 100%, but the flow back when standing is often because of perishing leak off pipes between the injectors, which allows air in at the top of the system. If the system is airtight, then the fuel can't drain down to the tank. I have been through this a few times on my 300, and my 200 now seems to have it.

Just to add if no one covered it all ready. The top of that lift pump can only fit one way because there is a notch in the body and lid to align the two pipes in same direction direction

Yes had similar to this before on a 300. Wouldn't bleed or start after changing the filter and leak back pipes. Lift pump was dead, blew through it both ways no resistance, but had run fine and done a 200+ mile journey only a few days before. Must have been running purely on the internal bosch injector pump Low pressure pump.

Yes the pump in the injector pump is quite strong - the VW VE's did 't have a lift pump

My 300tdi had a dead lift pump, but the engine worked very well, it wasn´t doing nothing there. I´ve already replaced it. Thanks for your videos, keep up the good work!

Thanks When get my 110 project running I may experiment with an electric pump as the mechanical ones go bad at an alarming rate Mike

Indeed! I have an injector tester, BUT I do not have the shims to put in the injectors to balance them - not as straightforward as one thinks! Mike

Thanks for your confidence in me lee, but it is one area that I shy away from for a few reasons. One for them is costs There are an awful lot of cheap nozzles (the bit that squirts the fuel) from China on the market, and the fit and finish is good, however I was told by a local pump shop, that the metal they use is not as good as originals - so they are only good short term. To buy original nozzles they are almost half the price of a new injector - so factor in the cost of rebuilding them in a shop, and you find you might as well buy them new! Mike

Check the ground lug that is attached to the chassis via the same cable - could be corroded
