World of Warships Blitz - German destroyer "Elbing" review

The second new line that's come out last week is the German scout cruiser line - don't be fooled by the destroyer symbol :) I haven't really warmed up to those mine-laying gunboats, but maybe the Elbing at tier 10 can change my mind.

The biggest thing I see with these guns is to strip main guns off of capital ships to burn damage controls. Then you need the HE spammer on your team to light them up. Probably not great for solo random play but think in team play this will be useful ship line.

the Elbing is based off of the Spahkruezer 1940 design I believe, as they wanted a scout cruiser for the Z plan. Felix and Gustav are Z types (probably 1937 J or something)

From what I've seen so far, she will easily overpen destroyers at close ranges, but not all DDs are the same. I haven't tested it extensively, just an observation while playing.

Khabarovsk, Harugumo, Klebir and this Elbing, they all have the look of the destroyer but take the responsibility of a cruiser. These scouting destroyer should play a greater role in T8, but they are kinda awkward (a.k.a useless) in T10 due to the environment. WarGaming has been trying to create a more versatile gameplay in T10 for multiple times but failed most of them. Yesterday I got my Johan DeWitt, the DzP is pretty handy in T8 battle but oh god not for the Dewitt. She has a 9.3km range of airstrike which is shorter than the 9.9km of DzP. And I would say that even 10km is not enough for T9/10 battles cuz EVERYBODY IS DOING LONG-RANGE SNIPING. So most of the time I used her main battery AP as the main weapon. Though the penetration wasn’t bad, it utterly became a super cruiser just like Yoshino and Puerto Rico. WG seemed to know this awkwardness so the RNG rarely put it into a T10 battle, but when it does, Oh man those matches suck. You see, it’s a shame that a lot of these “ creative ships” works in T8 but fails in T10. Well at least in my opinion, Elbing is the most fun-to-play ship among those scouting destroyers. Nonetheless I discovered some hilarious ways of using the airstrike other than just bombing ships in T9/10 matches. 1. Scouting destroyers, especially those corner-cutting ones. Shimakaze is so pissed 😂 2. Force those hidden firing ship like a Worcester to get out of the mountain. 😂 3. Force a Minotuer out of her smoke 😂 (I’ve tried this on both the Smolensk and the Minor, Smolensk failed Minor worked)

I'm still quite curious to see how Haru will play. Aki is great, but T10 is very different from T8, like you said. That's where the MvR also falls flat for me. The one ship that works really well in 10 for me is the GK. Yes, it's a long-range slugfest, but if there's a gap in the battle line, she can ruthlessly exploit it. Elbing has her niche, but it's counter-intuitive, since she doesn't really fit the destroyer role, but also not the cruiser role. Same issue with the others, like Khaba - niche ships need to rely on their teams to allow them to play to strengths, which is what makes them inherently disadvantaged.

Better not to attempt the Harugumo though.😂 I used to own her in my Asian account but eventually sold her.(I hardly sell any ship and she’s one of them.) She is that kind of ship whose performance purely rely on “if enemy ship don’t notice you and don’t shoot you”. 😂 She has some flaws that are fatal for a destroyer. Her maneuverability is even more terrible than the Khaba, her turret turns much much slower than the Khaba, and she is almost 1.5 times of a Khaba in terms of length. 😂 In addition, 2 smoke one might be enough for an Akizuki in T8 but man 3 smoke one leave sooo much to be desired for Harugumo in T10. Aha one more thing, don’t attempt to shoot her AP even in close range though, they will bounce off on a shimakaze. 😂

Yea the 128/7’a are a bit better it still bothers me that the original Narvik was switched. Narvik class DD’s had 150mm/5.9” not the 128/7mm/5”. Now we have 3 Narviks, the Z23, Z31 and Z39…. All are the same yet drastically different. The 23 is undergunned, the z39 is fine(although they have a modified lesser gun variant) and the Z31 which has all the right qualifications except a ridiculously long range torp set. Those torps are variable speed so being slower is fine but they should be 12-16km torps at that speed. The slowest setting has the longest range, faster speed setting had shorter range.

16km torps would be too long, on many maps, that'll be like 80% of the diameter. Now that the dust has settled a bit on the German DD tree, I might go back and do some more reviews, including the mid-level premiums.

The traditional line (the Z's) are destroyer hunters. Good guns, usable torpedoes, but not the best stealth. Good for frontline fighting and cap control. The new line (Elbing) are ranged AP spammers. Not quite as effective against DDs, more hanging back with the bulk of your team and shooting things from there. Very slow torps. So it really depends on what your preference is in terms of playstyle.

This ship is…..interesting to say the least. I honestly don’t know what to think. I like the guns and armor, but for a cost of a loss of a hydro and “mines”? We’ll see how it goes

Yes, that was pretty much my feeling as well. The guns behave more like 203s than 150s, that helped me with my mindset, just think of it as a very small heavy cruiser. What I don't like is the rather singular purpose - the defAA doesn't do jack all, the speed is rather pedestrian, so you're relegated to long-distance AP spam duty.
